Sterak's Gage is better item for squishys than for Tanky/brusier champions

item 3053 gives a 30% max HP shied when taking 400~1800 in 5 seconds.

I am a tank top/jg secondary main, I have plenty of experience on tank/brusier. When I try item 3053 for the first time I realized a VERY SERIOUS ISSUE about it.

1.Tanks/brusiers with plenty of resist(150~200+) doesn't take dmg as quickly because of their high resistance, which means it's harder for the tank to proc the shied. While squishies with low defensive power can take large chunk in a short period of time, therefore easier to proc the shied.

  1. 1800 hp for a lv18 full build tank/brusier means NOTHING. This shied was meant to be used for safety when in danger, but a tank losing 1800 hp really doesn't mean much. For example: I was playing a Sion top about lv15 with about 4300 HP with a item 3083 . I took some poke and I had about 4/5 of my HP, then this shied procs immediately for 0 reason, EVEN EXCEEDING MY MAX HP. WTF? What is the point of this shied? I was nearly full hp and I only took some poke dmg,** I DON'T NEED THAT SHIED WHEN I WAS SO HEALTHY**. While squishies usually have about 2k hp with this item at max level, and taking 1800 dmg ACTUALLY THREATS THEIR SAFETY and the shied proc WILL ACTUALLY HELP THEM. Isn't this item supposed to be used by tanky brusiers(AKA Juggernaut like Garen ) to increase their durability? In fact this item is completely GARBAGE for tanky champions with high HP because it procs sooooo early!

  2. 400 HP+25% base ad really means much less for Tanks and it means a lot more for squishy. Look at all the traditional tank/brusier items, item 3143 500hp+60 armor, item 3800 500hp+300mana,item 3083 850 hp,item 3065 500hp+70mr+10%cdr, item 3742 500hp 50 armor and 60 movementspeed, THERE IS NO REASON FOR A TANK/brusier TO BUILD THIS ITEM COMPARE TO TRADITIONAL TANK/Juggernaut ITEMS.

I found this very surprising, and something need to be changed. A tank item working better on squishy champion than tanks sounds ridiculous.

Here is what I think should be changed:

  1. item 3053 should have a limit similar to item 3083 , which means the champion has to have a large amount of hp for Sterak's fury to activate.
  2. It should give more hp
  3. Instead of taking 400~1800 dmg base on level, it should be % of the champion's hp instead. And it should only proc when it reaches a dangerous hp level for example 30%.

It's not meant for tanks because Tanks don't have to worry about getting bursted down that fast, unless the enemy team is incredibly ahead or it's super late-game. It's meant for bruisers that get focused often.

Tanks/Brusiers are similar comcepts in the meta right now, but you are right I should change the wording a bit. I am pretty sure this item was made for Juggernauts like Garen Darius Illaoi who build plenty of HP, it was meant to make them more durable in fights and buff their high base dmg.

Your entire post is wrong... where to start?

  • You complain about it being too hard for a tank to pop the shield, then go on to complain about how the shield popped on your Sion from just some small poke damage. It's too hard or too easy, not both. How can some light poke pop it, but you can't get it to pop when you're getting hit by everything in the middle of a teamfight?
  • It's not 400HP + 25% base AD. It's that PLUS SIZE, 25% more base AD, and 30% max health shield. Why does a squishy champion want to get bigger? They're easier to hit with skillshots then and they want to dodge those! A tank/bruiser on the other hand WANTS to eat those skillshots for his back line and thus the size works well on them. All (or almost all) melee champions have higher base AD than ranged champions, so the 25%+25% base AD is much better on them. Finally, 30% MAX HP shield is trivially substantially better on a champion that has a significantly higher base health pool and is stacking other health items than it is on a squishy champion with a lower health pool and no other health items. Further, the effective health from the item and the shield is significantly increased due to the resistances built by tanks compared to squishies.
  • Your suggestions 2 and 3 would actually make it better for squishies - more flat health is more impactful on a squishy. Needing to take a percent of health is much easier on a low health target than on a health stacking target. It'd be nigh impossible to burst 50% of a champion with over 5K health, but pretty easy to burst 50% of a champion with 2.5k health.
  • The item isn't meant for tanks either. It's meant for bruisers/fighters. The patch notes on release stated very clearly that it's intended for champions that tend to build health but not many resistances. It was released alongside Titanic Hydra because it synergizes well with it.
  • The shield is insanely strong (30% max health is a lot, like more than cinderhulk gave to BONUS health pre-nerfs!) and it can only be that way if it's somewhat unreliable. Meaning that enemies can proc the shield and then wait it out before re-engaging. Or enemies can avoid hitting the damage threshold and just slowly take you down. It's counterplay. The item should be bought reactively to taking lots of AOE damage or getting bursted in fights, it's not a go-to default power item.
  • It synergizes well with Sheen items due to the base AD. Almost no squishy champions build Triforce or Iceborn Gauntlet (Corki and Ezreal respectively being the only ones that come to mind). Many bruisers build these items, especially when these items are strong.

It's much better on it's intended class of champions. The reason you're seeing what you're seeing is twofold: -Tank itemization is pretty strong right now. Steraks isn't going to stand out when it's relatively balanced and everything else is OP. -ADC itemization is pretty weak right now. They have nothing to withstand burst damage in a meta where assassins have sufficient base damage to build full tank and still 100-0 them. Steraks is simply the best option available, even though it's subpar for the class.

Point 1 isn't actually that much of an issue. You might get the shield less, but when you do get the shield it is effectively far larger due to your resistances.

Besides, resistances matter a whole lot less when it hits the late game...

The Deckowner1 votes

Yes point 1 is kinda just there, but the actual issue is point 2, where the shied procs so early on tanks/brusiers that it is kinda just wasted.

redniwediS1 votes

Whether it was wasted or not depends on the given situation. For many Bruisers sustain can be a problem, so preventing damage early is actually a benefit when your team requires you on the front lines for an extended period.

Not really, traditional team comps with have a utility/hard engage tank to back up the brusier who is diving the backline. The brusier isn't the actual front line of the team, they are the one engaging and threating the enemy backline.

for example Maokai +Graves Malphite +MonkeyKing

The front line is supposed to handle engagements. Part of that is actively diving the enemy team, but the other part is acting as a damage soak and peeler when your team is the one being engaged upon.

Bruisers fill both of these roles. They should not be the entire front line, but they are most definitely part of it. In any case I was meaning the location, where they usually stand between their carries and the enemy team, rather than the role of engager/defender.

If you have low sustain and high resistances it is far more efficient to use your shield early.
