Theorycraft: Malzahar

Since it's snowing outside and I don't have anything else to do right now, I decided to look at new Malz and old Malz side-by-side and try to brainstorm an "update" for him. I don't even play Malzahar and never have, so this is purely theorycraft.

The numbers probably aren't that well-tuned, mainly the mana costs. I just added them to make the post look more complete, mainly. I care more about the base concept than the numbers anyway, since it's not like one theorycrafter can actually test numbers.

I made Malefic Visions not bounce, but instead refund the ability's cooldown so you actually have to stick around to re-cast it rather than just firing and forgetting it. The bouncing seems to be a contributing factor to Malzahar's non-interactiveness, even if it is iconic.

///

Passive: Void Beckoning

Static Cooldown: 36 / 32 / 28 / 24

When Void Beckoning is off cooldown, Malzahar's next ability cast summons a Voidling to his side that lasts for 15 seconds or until killed.

Void Beckoning's cooldown is reduced by 2 seconds whenever Malzahar casts an ability or an enemy champion takes damage from an active Voidling.

Voidling stats are probably roughly the same as the pre-rework Voidlings, but they now gain a bit of Armor based on Malzahar's Level rather than gaining it after a short duration.

///

Q: Call of the Void

Range: 900 Cost: 70 / 75 / 80 / 85 / 90 Mana Cooldown: 6

Active: Malzahar summons two orbs at the target location perpendicular to where he is facing, dealing magic damage to all enemies caught between the orbs and silencing them.

Voidlings gain a brief burst of Movement Speed towards targets damaged by Call of the Void.

Magic Damage: 70 / 105 / 140 / 175 / 210 (+ 70% AP) Silence Duration: 1 / 1.25 / 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 Seconds

///

W: Encroaching Void

Range: 750 Cost: 75 Mana Cooldown: 15 / 14 / 13 / 12 / 11

Active: Malzahar opens a rift to the Void at target area, which lasts for 5 seconds and gradually expands over the duration. Enemies within the rift receive Magic Damage per second based on their Maximum Health.

Voidlings gain bonus Attack Speed within the rift.

Magic Damage per Second: 3 / 3.5 / 4 / 4.5 / 5 (+1% per 100 AP) of Target's Max Health Voidling Bonus Attack Speed: 40 / 55 / 70 / 85 / 100%

///

E: Malefic Visions

Range: 700 Cost: 40 / 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 Mana Cooldown: 14 / 12.5 / 11 / 9.5 / 8

Active: Malzahar afflicts the targeted enemy's mind, dealing Magic Damage to them over the next 4 seconds.

The duration of Malefic Visions is extended by 1 second each time the target receives damage from another of Malzahar's abilities or is attacked by a Voidling, up to a maximum duration of 8 seconds.

If a target dies while afflicted with Malefic Visions, the cooldown on Malefic Visions is refunded by 60% and Malzahar regains Mana.

_ Magic Damage per Half-Second: 10 / 14.375 / 18.75 / 23.125 / 27.5 (+ 8.75% AP) Mana Refund on Kill: 24 / 30 / 36 / 42 / 48 (+2% Maximum Mana)_

///

R: Nether Grasp

_Range: 700 Cost: 100 Mana Cooldown: 120 / 105 / 90 _

Active: Malzahar knocks down the targeted enemy champion, then channels and suppresses the target for the next 2.5 seconds, dealing Magic Damage to them per half-second while the channel holds.

The cooldown on Void Beckoning is accelerated by 75% while Malzahar channels Nether Grasp, and will automatically activate if it comes off cooldown while Malzahar is channeling.

Magic Damage per Half-Second: 40 / 80 / 120 (+16% AP) Total Magic Damage: 200 / 400 / 600 (+80% AP)

I mainly wanted to make it his old kit, but with a bit more interactivity for his voidlings and less "press E and watch the wave die from 1000 range away while doing nothing else".

I figured someone who actually played old Malzahar would be able to weigh in on my baseless theorycrafting.

the problem with old malzahar was that his pool was a one point wonder. 220 base damage on a DoT is EXTREMELY low.

The problem with DoTs is that they suffer from magic resist each tick, making them either powerful or simply not. Your suggestion is extremely low damage and doesnt address ANY of the problems of pre or post rework malzahar. Pre-rework malzahar had 320+0.8 or so on E and 300+0.8 on Q. His ult, likewise, was at 550+1.3 base damage.

I think a better idea, if you want voidlings to be on a passive, is to just have his passive be buffs for the voidlings in general and maybe give malzahar %increased AP based on how many voidlings he has active. The W, in that vein, Could be changed to something like zzrot where it just occasionally spawns voidlings with a short lifespan that can be directed with malefic visions and nether grasp. Maybe enemies killed by malefic visions drop void eggs, and his W is a static void portal with x amount of hits as health that interacts with Q by creating a triangle? Malefic visions could also interact with it by spawning voidlings per effected enemy killed?
