Indeed, it has always been like this. However, it required WAY more skill to pull off in previous seasons. Right now, it's so terrifying to be ganked. In previous seasons, if you played it poorly, you would get DOUBLE killed.
No, it really didn't.
Early on (s2, s3, and I think s4?) you had to BUY wards. There was no trinket. If you purchased one ward you would be at a gigantic disadvantage in lane, so most laners (even at the pro level) showed up to lane with 0 wards.
"However did they survive?!" you ask? Simple, they weren't fucking retarded. They knew that hard shoving the wave in the first couple of levels was an immediate death sentence, so would generally work hard to control the wave (including not just hard trading like a mouth breather every time they saw the enemy laner) to maintain safety. They'd also read the enemy laner's tells.
This wasn't regarded as broken.
Once trinkets came out, they immediately had an early game cooldown.. Which again prevented top laners from warding out the gate. Same shit as before, only past a certain mark you could drop your ward and have some safety.
As it stands, pre 8.10 jungle changes, top laners have never been so safe. Let me repeat that.
#Top laners have never had as many tools and opportunity to read jungle movement and not get murdered by an early game.
Free early game wards are a mind bogglingly strong tool. The only thing which has changed is that junglers can (well, could) show up top lane with a level advantage; being level 3 a few creeps before the laners hit 3. While that's impactful, it's heavily mitigated by the fact that you can fucking ward and see them coming.
The current hysteria over junglers being too strong and reducing the "skill" of solo laners is just that; hysterical. It has absolutely no basis in truth, and anyone claiming that current (or pre 8.10) jungler influence on top lane is stronger than it's been in the past is demonstrably wrong.
