About Galio's Rework

I know he is not the most popular champion, but i like the guy. Are there any general ideas of what the update attempts to accomplish?

I would like his Q, W and R to remain as they are, or at least mostly if possible as there is synergy with them, and the changes (if they must change him) to be in his passive and E.

His passive is unique (except by it being a MR version of Rammus's), but as both his shield and ult work (mostly) with auto-attacks, its the thing that less synergy provides from his kit.

And though his E gives him some movement he uses to get close, it seems like a not very interesting spell, and the gap can be also closed by slowing with his Q.

Also, if he will be meant as a solo laner, his auto attacks could be improved to facilitate early farming.

Thats my thoughts and doubts about him.

I’m happy to announce that after looking into a few projects, we finally got a solid direction on the next project that Team B will roll onto after Yorick. It's the champion people love to forget, Galio! Currently Galio has a lot of problems. His theme, gameplay, and art hasn’t aged very well at all. This gives us a pretty wide canvas to paint on and Galio will likely be our largest transformation to date. So what are our goals with Galio? With Galio we want to see if we can really deliver on a mid lane focused tank/mage , as we think that opens up a lot of interesting strategies (not that he has to be played exclusively mid of course). We also think that him being some sort of statue/construct is super important as well as his strong ties to Demacia. DEMACIAAAAAAAA! (Had to get that out of my system.)

let me just say "tank/mage" has failed across the board.

we already have "tank mages" and they dont get put in the mid lane for good reason, its not what you want from your mid laner, its always oppressive or never good enough.

and assuming you can include these guys or not.

Sigh, now im scared. First of all it will be a hard month as he will become "flavor of the month", which will bring all the "i main Galio since season 1" players.

The only reason i see why someone would use him in mid lane is his passive and the fact that his taunt doesn't damage him a lot against AP champs.

That and what said above, is why i think his general kit has a lot of synergy and isn't specially bland or anything.

So i think the things more open to change in his kit are Passive and E.

Sometimes i don't get when they do a "Sion level" update, thats like releasing a completely new champion while eliminating an old one. So they could just bring up a new champion and make lesser changes to the old one, something that doesn't interfere much with the meta but that can still be used.

Saying you want the majority of his kit to stay the same during a full blown rework makes literally zero sense. And his W also isn't a shield, it's just a defensive buff.

The only things that I can see staying the same are his ult and his passive with some possible different touch up to make him still be good against mages.

They do full VGU to champs when their kit hasn't aged well and it's pretty bland or inherently toxic like poppy and yorick's were

Also it's not as simple as "bring up a new champ and changing the old one"

Because if the "new champ" is supposed to be or be like the one being updated, then what would be the point of having the old champ around apart from the small fanbase that played it and their kit would still have the terrible problems that originally sparked the new/similar one

im just giving my opinion as someone who likes Galio.

And his W also isn't a shield, it's just a defensive buff.

Its worded and has the graphics as if it were a shield, but yeah, it actuality it isn't as it doesn't proc anything that triggers with shielding.

VGU changes are understandable and i wouldn't complain about that. Poppy and Yorick were pretty toxic, but Galio's kit isn't really toxic at all.

Why not ?

Because if the "new champ" is supposed to be or be like the one being updated, then what would be the point of having the old champ around apart from the small fanbase that played it and their kit would still have the terrible problems that originally sparked the new/similar one.

The first part would only apply to VGU changes, which i agree, if you are only updating graphics it wouldn't make sense to have 2 champions, but if they change graphics along all the champ's kit, i think it would be better to just fix the champ with small tweeks.

Though i don't believe that applies to Galio since i don't find his kit toxic at all.

I never said his kit was toxic I was stating that it's a driving factor for some VGUs. His kit isn't toxic but it's relatively bland.

And it would be a balancing nightmare for one, and two some champions have problems beyond small tweaks (See Ryze, Mordekaiser, Azir, Kalista) and require a large scope of work to be done to make them to try to make them healthier and/or more competitive.

For example if you made a new champion using yorick's rework, old yorick would still have his problems and no amount of small tweaks would change that, which is why he never received any for a large amount of time, hence why he got an entirely new kit.

I'd be fine if they just reworked his E a little. Maybe increase the movement speed depending on how many champions he's heading toward.

Also his Q is a little blah. Maybe a little something to spice it up, like if he autos them up to 2s after they're hit, something happens.

I am scared too as someone who used to main Galio back in season 2 when he was actually one of the best champs in the game. Right now I can see why he doesnt fit League any more, his skillshots are shit, they cost way too much mana, his W is honestly a broken ability that lets me tank 1v5 with no problem, his ulti is so easily cancelled by anything and cant function without flash.

What I hope will stay the same in this rework is the following:

  • his color theme, it might sound stupid but one of 2 things that brought me to Galio was that I loved his color theme and his looks, I dont want him to be turned into some dark gargoyle like they did with Sion (where it worked honestly), I want the blue-yellow pattern

  • his title "The Sentinels Sorrow" sounds so fucking cool and its the second and main part of why I bought him back in the day, also I would like that part of his lore - that he was made to be a guardian to an old very powerfull archmage Durand who got killed by Noxian assassins, that needs to stay or will absolutely ruin the champion and simply replace it with a new one (again champs like Poppy and Sion had a piece of shit lore, this one on the other hand isnt a piece of shit and has lot of potential and NEEDS to stay)

  • his ulti is what defines Galio, unlike many other fully reworked champions who didnt have iconic ulti (except WW of course), Galio is THE champion that is defined completely by his ultimate alone, his other skills are forgetable and lame, this is both good and bad for RIOT since they can make whatever they want out of his spammable skills and combine them, but the big one needs to stay the same (also if the lore part remains the same, the ulti name should stay because its epic), so I hope they wont experiment there

But I am afraid they will just completely change everything like they did to other guys, his lore will probably be gone as well as his looks and ulti and old Galio will remain only in our hearts.

They said they want to keep his identity as a 'Mage Tank' who specializes in fighting against enemy mages.

Specifically, he's a Vanguard (hybrid Battle Mage). So expect to be protecting backlines and being tanky.

So in other words "a completely different champion that looks like a gargoyle" XD
