Let me tell you about how Urgot is 'terrible to play against'

Ulquiorra995··80 votes·5,675 views

Those of you who frequent the boards - go on, ask yourselves: how many threads complaining about Urgot have you seen? I have seen none, despite his sudden spike in popularity and pro plays.

And you know why? Because there are lots of champions much more frustrating to face. Go on, ask your average player what opponents they hate the most. I'll tell you.

They... no, WE, the players, will always take Urgot over:

Leblanc Kalista Zed LeeSin Nidalee Champions who can mess up hard and still be near impossible to punish due to massive amounts of mobility. Especially LB and Zed who also burst someone and then trolololo back to safety.

Riven Blitzcrank Akali Katarina Nidalee Champions against whom you aren't allowed to make a single slightest mistake - since it will lead to them getting out of control. Special mention to Blitz who can single-handedly (pun intended) win the game over that slightest mistake.

Thresh LeeSin Irelia Nidalee Gnar Champions overloaded to the point that when you lose you never feel like getting outplayed - but getting outkitted.

(Yes, Nida is an annoying bitch.)

Nunu Seriously. Fuck this guy. I'd play against 10 Teemos before 1 Nunu.

But are any of them getting hit? I don't think so. And I think I understand: Urgot is a playstopper. Think about it. He falls off late, but still has his thing - making one person's life a misery. Melting their armor, damage and speed and ultimately swapping them to their doom. That stops even the flashiest of champions dead in their tracks. HE IS THE DEFINITION OF AN ANTI-CARRY. Master of peppering one person, be it with damage in lane or debuffs in teamfights. And is still more fair than assassins: Urgot may swap and debuff your carry, but LB or Zed will delete them and back off in a second .He is the only real anti-carry we have. And he should stay that way.

I'm pretty sure the reason nobody is complaining about Urgot is the fact that nobody is actually playing him. Hard for people to get frustrated with a champ who's in 2% of games.

He's also banned in more games than everyone who's less popular than him and quite a few people who are more popular than him, so I wouldn't say the community is completely OK with him. You have to go up to Azir, seen in 4% of games, before you find a champion banned more than him.

I agree that there are probably champions the community hates more but don't judge Urgot as "fine" just because his banrate is low when he has a 2% play rate. That could change a lot if he gets actually popular.

I have faced good Urgots. That lane is usually pretty annoying, but it's fair at any rate: he can and will hit you, but he doesn't have any real way to avoid being hit either, at any point in the game. I can name several champions with more annoying laning phases than Urgot just off the top of my head in midlane: Zed "lol i have two EZ last hitting tools and an escape" Leblanc Instant, extremely painful and near undodgeable poke. Azir Can hit you with zero retaliation. Actually, that's the entire point of the champion. Yasuo Oh, guess I'm not hitting skillshots this game. Heimerdinger Oh, guess I'm not having fun this game. Chogath "Poke? What's that?"

WhiteGuyWannaBe3 votes

I don't mind LB, Heim, or Cho in lane. They all have extremely distinct play styles which can be played around, at least in mid lane, and I can safely say I would prefer to play against any of them over Urgot. Given all three of those can be extremely annoying mid-late game, especially LB, but the same could be said for over 1/4 of the champions in the game.

BluePolarizer2 votes

lolwut. LB doesn't even need to win lane. Fail to call MIA a single time or call it too late, and she's already got a double kill, and will soon be coming back with a Needlessly Large Rod to abuse you with.

BluePolarizer2 votes

Urgot is an LCS pick. Low elos don't play him because they aren't good enough with his mechanics.

skippersd3 votes

Ehm. LoL

Urgot's mechanics? Hit E, (an AOE skill), WQQQQQQQQ. Such mechanics.

He has ONE skillshot, that is AoE. Rito Dislikes urgot because he shits on the flashy champs.

That's funny, I expected the truth to have downvotes by now. Maybe people are finally starting to understand.

mi ramfan1 votes

Now you're OOM because Urgot's early game mana regen isn't enough to allow more than one or two EQQQQQ combos per recall.

He needs at least Tear + some AD before he really gets scary.

AMYS GRAVE7 votes

I absolutely agree, Urgot feels fine to play as and against. There are far worse champions that need work.

Remlap12235 votes

Forgive me if I'm not convinced that you've ACTUALLY played against Urgot, because Urgot is shit on a stick to play against.

Terchio5 votes

His E is insanely hard to hit, as it has relatively low range and AoE, decently high delay, and a high cooldown, meaning if he does miss, it's open season, generally. That, along with being immobile and highly single-target, leaves him in a decently balanced position. If you build any armor against him, as you should, his harass won't do that much, and a single EQQQ combo isn't going to kill you. You just have to realize that half health is not safe against him, and maybe bait out some E's when he can't completely wipe you with one combo.

R can make him lane more reliably, but even that has a crazy low range until leveled to level 3. Just treat him like the bruiser he is, and you're going to shut him down fairly easily for a sub-par lategame.

AMYS GRAVE4 votes

He falls off hard late game so all you have to do is play safe and wait.

If you have any mobility at all it's easy to dodge his e.

You can counter build him with some health (and to a lesser extent armor)

Any meaningful waveclear against him gives you the freedom to roam.

His damage is sustained, not too bursty, so he should have very little kill pressure on you early. You might have to back if you eat too many qs but other than that.

I mean I'm sorry you can't kill your lane opponent in every matchup but that's not always supposed to be the case and that shouldn't be the benchmark for judging champion playstyles and counterplay.

Reseren1 votes

He does not really fall off late game by much so long as he has armor pen runes and itemization, unless he is played as an adc, in which yes he does fall off compared to a normal adc.

BluePolarizer2 votes

Play against Urgot like you play against Pantheon. If you are down less than 20 CS and only died once, and he hasn't snowballed the rest of the lanes, you'll win after 30 minutes.

FirstSergeantBim1 votes

What these guys have said.

And also, it really depends on who you pick into the matchup. But for the most part, his biggest weakness is his wave clear. Urgot isn't moving up the lane very fast so you can push him under his turret and while he's good at farming under turret, it allows you to roam really well knowing that he isn't going to roll down your tower any time soon. Also, his whole game hinges on his E, so if you bait/dodge that, then you're golden.

Does he fall off late game? Yes and no. He has immense single target damage and armor shred at all stages of the game, so in that respect, he never falls off. But the thing is, late game is all about wave-clear, movement and pushing. Urgot sucks at all three. If his team can cover his weaknesses, then he will be very difficult to deal with, but most people don't really know how to complement an Urgot on their team.

In summary, don't let him land his E and split-push the shit out of him and you'll be good to go.

Looks like someone really hates Nidalee.

And for good reason too.

Anidan3 votes

In a fair and just world, there would be no Nidalee because everyone would have the sense to leave her out of the game.

Same with Kalista. Fuck her with a winged spear.

Wheatloaf5 votes

Chances are he'll stay an anticarry, but the way he accomplishes it will be a little more interesting than "the person I'm attacking is slowed and does less damage." Also, his soloqueue playrate hasn't picked up much across all ELOs, so he's still less common than the usual complaints for a lot of players.

Pæan5 votes

"Nunu Seriously. F*** this guy. I'd play against 10 Teemos before 1 Nunu." Absolutely 100% with you on that. I hate seeing him against me in the jungle. His job is literally to make my life miserable. He cant kill me in a duel, he cant really gank too strongly seeing as his only damage/cc is the snowball, but boy can he annoy the crap out of you and eat every single one of your camps should you ever try to back.

Not sure if the title was meant to be sarcastic to bring people in to look or just mislabled ... I agree with the content though.

The Loveless6 votes

Not sarcastic. Check surrender@20. Rioters were on reddit and Twitter talking about how Urgot still needs a rework, despite now being popular, because he's a pain to fight against.

Retillin1 votes

But I think that is OP's point. He is a pain to fight against, yet he doesn't seem to be the same pain that a lot of those champions he posted are.

Ulquiorra99515 votes

Sorry if it wasn't clear. This is the reason stated why Urgot is in need for a very soon rework, quoting:

"The rework is needed much more now that this awful to play against champion is so popular. We do not rework champions because they are weak or unpopular. We rework champions because they are bad for the game. Sometimes that leads to them being unpopular, and sometimes we nerf champions that are bad for the game and popular to alleviate the pain until we can rework them, but make no mistake on why we rework."

Now, Urgot has been just out of the trash can for what? Two patches? And he is immediately met with this - despite many other champions fitting the description much more and being agreed by pretty much every player that does not play them a such, ex. LB and Nidalee.

"The rework is needed much more now that this awful to play against champion is so popular. " "We do not rework champions because they are weak or unpopular. We rework champions because they are bad for the game. "

"make no mistake on why we rework."

Excuse me? So why is LB allowed to have such an unhealthy pattern to play for this long? Why is Nidalee allowed to have poke, sustain, assassination and free mobility all in one package? Why is Blitz allowed to instantly turn the tide of the game by luck, no matter how hard he fails? I'm telling you, you won't find a single player that enjoys facing these.

Honestly, just the way it's worded almost sounds like they are mocking us. "This awful to play against champion is bad for the game and has go go. Oh,and enjoy your games vs totally fun to play against LB, Kalista, Gnar, Zed, Blitz, Nidalee, Riven and the rest"

skippersd1 votes

Blitz is not THAT bad. Yes, he can single handedly win a game, but he can lose a game as well (pull a karthus/tank into his own team).

Remlap12233 votes

As someone who has played against Poppy, Urgot, and Yorick, I can confirm that they're complete cancer to play against. Poppy is tolerable until she hits 6, then she becomes more broken than Tryndamere's ultimate. Ult the support, dive the carry, instantly win.

Urgot is extremely frustrating to play against. Basically if he hits his E on you, he's going to chase you out of lane with little effort. Go in on him? Well, he just popped his shield, slowed me, and now I'm dead, and didn't even break the shield.

And then the grandaddy of all bullshit champions that aren't popular: Yorick. There is a reason why the joke "Yorick walks into a bar; there's no counter" exists. Once Yorick builds Tear, you cannot remove him from the lane. He will ousustain anyone. Not even Teemo can stop Yorick, because all Yorick has to do is E over Teemo's mushrooms, and Teemo just lost all of his bullshit map presence.

And if you think because the boards don't complain about him, that's a good source of information? Here are some other opinions that the boards have formed over the years:

  • AP Fizz is healthy and balanced (pre 5.2)
  • AD Fizz is the most broken thing to ever exist in League (post 5.2).
  • Kalista is extremely weak and needs literally all of her stats buffed (on release)
  • Lissandra's passive is horrible and Lissandra is an extremely weak champion (before Season 5)
  • Lissandra is a completely broken champion that needs to be nerfed into the ground (season 5)

Shall I continue? Or can I rest my case?

rampaging poet1 votes

I actually played Teemo against a Yorick the other day. I seriously considered trying to proxy farm with mushrooms or counterjungle rather than stay in lane with him when I realized he could take out half my health with two ghouls the instant I got in range of his minions.

Remlap12235 votes

So, have we learned why Yorick is banned from the free rotation?

skippersd1 votes

Yet, you forgot to mention a few things:

Poppy: I play poppy. She is broken as hell, ONCE she gets triforce, AND she's not stupidly behind a that point. If she's not, shame on you. Yorik&Urgot: They are the kings of BS laning phase. But, for the rest of the game, their contribution is HIGHLY conditional. Yorik needs a fed, sutstained DPS carry to ult, and Urgot has WW's r from range.

Love that Nidalee is on all 3 of them.

Keevalroy3 votes

I actually love jungling versus Nunu's. Silvers are dumb as shit and don't know how to use him.

Photos of Ghosts2 votes

Rioters referred to when he was OP and they had to gut him in numbers (actually making him pretty balanced but everyone just started despising him cause he wasn't OP anymore).

Mandang02 votes

Zenon explained pretty well why Riot doesn't like Urgot's kit, and why their choice to remake him is based on kit health not strength. Popularity makes his kit's health a bigger deal for players, so it prioritizes him over other reworks, which is why Riot's working on him now.

With any luck, they'll keep the mechanics that allow him to counter #lcsbigplays, but just lose the miniexhaust and the slow.

Most of the champions you listed are fine. LB's pattern is NOT that bad. Just use a displacement while she is dashing, or dash away from it yourself. Nidalee is mildly annoying, but nothing super rage inducing. Gnar, has easy windows of power to play around, nothing too difficult there. Blitz? Dodge, position better, basic things. Kalista, point and click cc or AS slows. Riven? Darius. Uh, nunu? He's annoying, but if you properly ward, he isn't anywhere near as bad. I'm not per se for or against the urgot rework, but my point is that NONE of the champs you listed are either. They are all fine from a kit standpoint, and occasionally have slightly overtuned numbers.

BluePolarizer1 votes

Must be why Nunu is highest win rate high elo jungler while Kalista is a pro level pick or ban champ. LB is also the queen of mid in pro play and high elo with one of the highest ban rates. Blitz is one of the highest win rate supports.

Nunu just fits the meta right now, kalista works very well at lcs level for varying reasons, lb has been traded off in terms of picks with some more "traditional" mages. Namely cass and azir. And blitz falls middle of the pack in high ELO, so I wouldn't call that the top.

item 3070 Malzahar item 3070

QWER+summoner 14 , shit on a motherfucker and make them regret the day they chose to create a LoL account. And still, Urgot's more fun to lane against than Malzahar . I think it's inherently because Urgot 's hasn't been played for so long that nobody really ever knew how strong he is and how good at doing what he does, nobody had formulated any strategies vs him, nobody really knew how to play against him. For whatever the reason Riot considers his kit worse and more archaic than Nunu DrMundo Teemo and decided to screw him up real quick before he actualy sees legitimate play to the level the 3 categories you made do.

Urgots play pattern of hitting a slow moving projectile to get free acid hunters is toxic as hell.

Meanwhile Cassiopeia

Transgressor3 votes

True, but he has things going for him. Bitchiopeia on the other hand has her entire kit overloading her E: get a single tick of poison, eat a trillion E to the face, put in Bitch's Echo, rabadons, the fact that she heals herself and does damage over time to boot. Fuck her.

Nunu sitting at a comfortable 57% jungle win rate. He isn't being touched. Now that dragon buffs are more impactful, nunu's retard objective control is a huge problem.

As far as Urgot tho, he sucks to lane against, but I don't think he's any good in soloQ

largefish1 votes

riot just hates that he can stop #lcsbigplays I think he's actually a really cool champion who can make awesome outplays and has a clear role as an anti carry. Riot doesn't care about balance, they even admitted it in their patch notes. Riot just wants more Leblanc
