Turnaround : I finnally understand why riot made games shorter

Well it's kinda weird but with some research here is something i forgot and many of us

Well it seems that we all forgot that Asians play in communities in internet cafés and pc banks aren't free. The open mid phenoma doesn't really exists in na or eu. But in asia they really let the opponents go straight to the nexus if the game is looking bad to win time and to not spend a lot of money. In asia lol is really popular so after school or college you go with 4 friends play games in internet cafe its easier for you than everyone at home. And many kids don't have their own computer.

So winning time for them is winning money. It's a little bit paradoxal to have to pay to play a free game. Kids or young people don't always have a lot of money... yep... we don't live all in wealthy countries (china for example).

Riot said they used surveys in the past and majority of the players wanted shorter games. Majority of the players = china and korea. That why we don't hear their complains.

I foud this video which talks about the subject https://youtu.be/UjunINOwvVw

After knowing this, well i have to admit i'm not against it, if it can help them.

However i think its a problem that the entire world has to adapt to this phenomena. Because in na or eu it this phenomena doesn't really exists

I think riot should have a kinda different meta for occidental countries and asian countries. Or try to find another solution.

making games shorter is one thing but this is getting insane the game is decided in the first 4 minutes 80% of the games nowadays if the jg ganks bot at around lvl 6 by the time bot lane revives and gets into their lane chances are they are missing 2 towers already. they are just playing with us at this point trying to see how long we can stand those absurd changes. they must understand that we pay their bills.

Oxyrotten3 votes

We don't pay their bills, that is the point. We are insignificant to their numbers and profits, as well as easily replaceable by larger demographics.

Ill enlighten you, under absolutely zero circumstance is riot willing to give up ANY PORTION OF THEIR PROFITS OR DEMOGRAPHICS, especially the portion with the highest average gdp.

Thank you for your effort to contribute.

You are correct, but the highest gdp does not come from us.

It doesn't even come from NA. It comes from the Asian gaming market, more specifically Tencent's primary market is the Asian gaming cafe demographic. And many of the changes over the last few years have been a direct effort to cater to that market.

And unfortunately you are wrong in regards to that last part, in business you have to weigh your cost opportunity and choose the higher portion of your revenue (or projected revenue) over a smaller demographic. That's how businesses run, and in the gaming industry it is a huge issue since the consumer audience is so diverse.

Also Riot has made a push to expand the demographics and marketing to bads, casuals, noobs, and younger demographics.

The second highest (possibly higher now that ridiculous franchising is put in place) is the LCS (a separate company btw, just like Riot is a separate company from Tencent). NA cash shop sales is far far below the "highest average gdp".

do you even know what gdp means? Like literally?

United States - $59,495 GDP (PPP) per capita

South Korea/GDP per capita 27,538.81 USD (2016)

China/GDP per capita 8,123.18 USD (2016)

etc etc asain countries dont even come close to touching our per capita gdp. Not even 1/5 for china.

So please sit here and wait for riot to drop na/eu etc, not gonna happen bubba

Im sure he does. GDP is irrelevant when you have the numbers of who gives you the most money. Our GDP could be 10x theirs and it wouldnt mean a damn thing if they have 300 million players giving 20 bucks to our 60 million giving 50. A profit minded company caters to the region that will be most profitable. If they can get that asian market to raise their average spent even 5 bucks it would equate to hundreds of millions of dollars.

well he blantently stated that we dont have a higher gdp, im not arguing who pays the most, im arguing gdp, and ours is killing asia's.

I do, and you weren't using it in a correct context or manner so I ran with your poorly drawn out explanation. That was probably my fault for indulging you. Haha, you got me. I walked right into that one.

Ill enlighten you, under absolutely zero circumstance is riot willing to give up ANY PORTION OF THEIR PROFITS OR DEMOGRAPHICS, especially the portion with the highest average gdp.

But since you were actually using gdp as an estimation of the gaming industry revenue... Please continue your explanation on how GDP determines the profits of a singular industry and a singular company in that industry. I would love for you to elaborate on your use of "GDP".

So please sit here and wait for riot to drop na/eu etc

No one said they would, don't put words in my mouth please. But they do make choices to favor one market over another. This is very common business practice as I explained earlier.

If you honestly think that the gdp of a country has no bearing on the amount of money they spend on a video game then youre insane.

And ill elaborate.

A gdp per capita of 8,000 dollars Is a daily allowance of 20 dollars a day, per person. While the american average is almost 200 dollars a day, per person. Pretty hefty difference, that even scales harder at the higher echelons of pay grade in na/eu, places that asians countries dont even touch in comparison.

**I understand fully that this is not the only factor when deciding money spent on said video game. But it is a massive one. **

Give the asian countries that are "DOMINATING" our purchases, our gdp, then maybe talks of shunning na/eu could start.

GDP per capita is an amazing tool for measuring a countries purchasing power.

Until i see actual numbers that state Asians countries spend more on lol, im not buying it. They have numbers, but the money isnt there.

Dude Tencent released a statement that just one single demographic (the asian gaming/internet cafe market) makes over 25% of their annual revenue, alone. Just that one single market, for a single game (they have like a dozen games) makes over a quarter of their total revenue... That is HUUUGE. And that was a few years ago, I can only imagine they have grown since then.

And then your talking about GDP depicting who spends more? They are already paying to play the game, a free game and they pay to play it at a rate of like 2.3:1.. And they shell out for much more than skins, they buy boosts which I didn't think anyone was foolish enough to buy.

in 2015 Riot released a statement saying that 15% of Korea's TOTAL POPULATION plays League... That's roughly 30 million people in Korea alone...

2017 Riot's server population puts NA at 10% of League's playerbase (EUW comes in #1 btw), TEN PERCENT compared to Korea at 23.5%... This also shows that the previous two years Korea came in #1 both times.

Again your talking of GDP, when that is just a gross estimation of a national economy. It's not at all an accurate indication of a single company in a single industries standings.

And your still talking hypothetically. This "shunning" (bad word choice again, but we will run with it) has already taken place. The asian gaming cafe market demands games not run longer than 30 minutes. Around season 5 Riot started implementing snowball mechanics, and other mechanics and meta's that put focus on early game and snowballing. There are currently around a dozen or so snowball mechanics, all intentionally designed to speed up the game progression rate, and shorten the length of game time.

But lets get to the juicy part: In 2017 Asian gaming industry revenue was around 51.2b... and NA? HALF THAT at 27.5b...

etc etc asain countries dont even come close to touching our per capita gdp. Not even 1/5 for china.

Btw China is/has been the world leader in the gaming industry revenue for many years now. (close to a decade?)

Where's your precious GDP God now?

Oxyrotten3 votes

Your forgetting that Riot doesn't care about us. The asian gaming cafe demands games under 30 minutes. And the asian gaming cafe is Tencents primary market. A few years ago tencent reported that one single demographic (asian gaming cafe) was reported for over 25% of their annual revenue. One demographic, for one single game (tencent has like a dozen), makes over 25% of their profits... That is HUUUUUGE. And I can only imagine that it has grown since then with all the game mechanics changes that Riot has implemented that cater to them.

And that aside Asian players outnumber us like 4 to 1 or some absurd number, so even by voting with our wallets and or boycotting will not even be noticed.

Plus changes that make the LCS casters scream louder over BIG PLAYS, and the LCS just franchised into a billion dollar industry. This is on top of and aside from it's billion dollar earnings from previous years.

Maybe I'm just getting old but I've always appreciated sustained fighting mechanics, (resource management, tower pressure, chaining cooldowns, chases, etc.) to the big wombo plays that are mostly game enders. Yay I did good! My reward? Game is over and I get a gold star. No, I'd rather be rewarded with more items and have the ability to roam the map harder and exert more pressure for another 20 minutes.

Oxyrotten1 votes

Unfortunately I think that is just our problem. We are getting old and remember when gaming served a purpose other than just an ego boost for scoring KDA.

Sometimes I forget that even though I fell in love with the game (and other games, Pre-WotLK WoW etc) for the complexity and depth of strategy, it's still a children's game. Or rather has become a children's game, and despite my personal sentiments, being a children's game perhaps isn't the worst thing in the world. Better to have loved and lost and that sort of thing.

explain different metas.

because i assume you don't mean different patches and such... because that wouldn't work out

Or much more likely it's simply the results of the new rune system backfiring. Same as the stupid level of burst.

Riot have stated many times that they made the games shorter because of pro play ppl must understand that riot doesnt give a damn about solo q plebs.

Oxyrotten1 votes

Riot has also lied to us many times. Pro play does have some to do with it though. But your right they don't care about us plebs.

Tychusfindlay9181 votes

Heh, if that's Riot's way of saying "sorry NA and EU" then maybe it's time for someone to take note and hopefully develop a game that us Americans and Europeans can go to instead of league.

This is kinda the problem with the global market. Hell, China might have influence over the film industry than we do because of sheer numbers.

Sadly going global is a major desire for developers of large games so “American only” games are just going to get swallowed up in popularity of the global stage if they choose to only stay in their region.

Depends, sheer numbers works in certain scenarios, after all the american and european per capita GDPs blow chinese ones out of the water. That probably explains why internet cafes are popular in places like china (how many of them can afford to just govout and buy a gaming level laptop or PC?). The problem is that league is hardly an expensive game by any stretch of the imagination, so yeah, more customers is going to determine the game rather than premium customers.

Ralanr1 votes

And frankly I’d rather not let this game be determined by premium players. That’s where P2W happens.

Not necessarily, something like having a game where you pay X amount and get the game as opposed to free2play with microtransactions caters more towards a north american and european market (granted Starcraft had that model and still became popular in korea)

On the same note, know that a large number of players including myself, have spent far more on this "free" game than any "$60" game.

A little stretch of the imagination actually turns this game from "free to play" to costing me, and far more people than you think, well over $1500 dollars.

In my personal situation, league of legends is over 2 fold the most expensive game i have ever played, and i collect classic video games and consoles.
