Ironnically you only see threads ranting about Blitz, but Thresh is much better.
That's because blitz is sleeper op...
[slayer-jinx-wink] toplane.
Meddler mentioned a very interesting possibility as to the reason for Thresh's new power spike: Now that Ancient Coin is an item that the majority of players are building on him, there is no longer a chance that Thresh players accidentally fuck up CSing with Relic Shield, thus giving their carries and themselves a much more reliable stream of gold.
Basically, Thresh players as a whole have been screwing themselves over this whole time by playing with sub-optimal items and doing their best to last hit when they really shouldn't have been, and now that they've stopped doing that their power is really shining through.

That theory can be disproved with simple statistics. 90% of Thresh players still build Relic and Relic has a higher winrate on him than Coin anyway.

If these statistics are accurate. No analytics site has access to the raw data that Riot has.
The sites have access to more than enough data to constitute a representative sample. It's worth remembering that Meddler often doesn't look at hard data for his answers in threads. Unless he says otherwise, it's probably just a hunch.

Possibly.
I have also personally seen Thresh start Coin and swap to FotM after lane in games since the patch. If that is the new trend then it's not something easy to datamine.
That's actually pretty easy to datamine. Items are stored in the API by order and timepurchased, so figuring out which ones a champion started with is pretty simple. That's how we can tell if people are purchasing items like Doran's items or consumables that shouldn't be in their build when the game ends. Most sites can show you what the most common starting builds are.
Now, winrate by item would be hard to judge if this was common practice, because most sites only take winrate as a function of if the item was present in your build at the game's end. However, just telling if this is something Thresh players do is not hard at all. From what I can tell, it looks uncommon. Might get more common in high elo play before long though. Personally though, I doubt it. I can't see it being worth the delay on your core items to sell the coin and repurchasing a basic item.
yep
well he does have the best hook and his entire kit can be used to escape or engage so its not like blitz who can only really engage
you know. there was a point or two where junglers were close to lee sin. or maybe were played more. for a patch or two
for two years. thresh has like twice the playrate of the 2nd most played support. always over 30% playrate. 2 full years. am sure this has been the case ever since his release. since thresh gives you so many options. and has way too many things going for him and no real counters.
I think there was a thread about this maybe one day ago
He is probably the most universal support that has everything, but for me it's nothing new.
TBH i hate facing thresh. Too much goodness in his kit.
