Custom item sets will still exist. You just have to use 3rd party tools or edit the files manually using a text editor.
The latter is actually not hard. You can pull the IDs from boards even with zero programming experience.

And the forums even have a search feature for those icons.
Ok. that's like a dull grey lining on a giant-ass stormcloud. I may have to resort to this, but this would feel just weird with the extra hoops. Riot currently has pretty good support of custom item sets, and I can't imagine that it takes all that much programming for Riot to carry this over. The item search is still present in the game, they could just use that code.

They're probably ditching it because it breaks every other patch when the item IDs all change.
The item ID's don't change every other patch. There are item IDs which are no longer used (like Deathfire Torch's ID) and don't get mapped to an icon for the current patch, but the IDs themselves are fine.
IDs almost never change its more about riot Overall spaghetti code.
We already have to rely on 3rd party tools for replays, and champion stats. This isnt a 2009 game anymore, and all of the other games in this genre have these features, in addition to training, sandbox mode, and other glaring features we're missing.
This is the first time we've had a feature removed, with Riot saying "yeah, just go do it with a third party download". Historically speaking, downloaded apps have had a history of clashing with Riot's 3rd party policies on one feature or another and getting the player banned, even if the user didn't use the feature (like Jungle Timers).
Third Party Replays and Champion stats you could get without downloading anything. The requirement to download something to change your item sets seems like a pretty big departure from policy here.
Not to mention the risk of the 3rd party download breaking the client, causing bugsplats during play, especially after a patch.
you know how many people play the game, you know how many likely dont know codding??
Kayle's Ezreal's, Jax's too
LOL DEAD THIS IS SO TRUE After 2 games I literally went straight to item sets and made one
Spirit Visage and Morello's on Lulu support never forget
Ionian boots on Kayle, Rageblade and Rav Hydra on Jax, Essence Reaver on Ezreal.
All these noob traps are why we need item sets.
The annoying part about it for me is on Map and modes. As I commonly play ARAM I have made special item sets tailored to that map. (Usually involves increased gold gen by using a support item.)

I spent quite a few hours making custom item sets, mostly for the ARAM map as well. I just spent a few more hours copying over the JSON code by hand so I will still have my item sets in the new client.
I am seriously disappointed that this feature isn't going to be developed, and am thinking about making my own item set creator if no one else steps up to the plate. It just really sucks that something so simple and useful will be removed just because not enough people are using it. I honestly am surprised that 100% of players aren't using item sets, they are so useful.
I actually found this thread while googling around for a custom item set creator tool.
I have no need for custom item sets simply because I've pretty much memorized all items and prices so it's very easy to find the item I want when I'm in a game. However I do still think item sets need to stay because I know not everyone is capable of doing that lol, especially for new players. When I just started playing item sets were a huge part of learning the game for me.

:P if that's true that would explain why im not in the mood to play league anymore - and havent for about a month.
There goes literally hours of work.
"we'll only do it if it affect our profits of jillions of dollars"
.... i have a custom item set for every champ i play.... multiple item sets for most of my champs.... if these get removed it is going to significantly increase the amount of time i spend while backed and likely make my purchase the wrong item..
spam the front page with our tears so rito-senpai will notice our need for speed in the shop with custom item sets and not have to remember how to spell
rito i cri

me when they removed mana pots
Item Set maker was bugged for me anyway, I couldnt apply one that I made since the button was stuck
In all honesty, I haven't used custom item sets in years. I just memorize my items. No way as a lulu one trick you don't have your items memorized haha
I don't really see the big issue. Nearly every champ I play, I go out of the recommended page. I just type in a few letters of the item, click it, and start building it bit by bit. Not really that hard.
