The health shard is a complete joke.

TotalJerk··93 votes·18,124 views

15-90 HP based on level.

Mini Gnar has the lowest base HP at level 18 in the game: 1615. If for some reason he doesn't buy a single point of HP, this shard would mean a 5.57% increase in health.

Anivia has the lowest base HP at level 1: 480. Removing Doran's from the equation, the shard gives her a 3.12 % increase in health.

I can joke about playtesting, but it's obvious that this shard is mathematically shit even in best case scenarios.

I mean. The tank shards can’t be good, otherwise it would contradict the assassin meta riot is forcing down our throats.

Assassin mains bitching and crying about anything that denies them kills have been the driving point of all the worst balance decisions Riot has made.

Basically. That and lc$ kinda fucked us because they wanted faster more exciting games. Instead we have this “nuke them faster” meta

It used to be ADCs who started all of this crap, mind you.

in your opinion what champion in game does the least amount of damage?

janna

tbh even janna does more noticeable damage ever since her "rework".

Oh believe me, I remember. Assassins just replaced ADCs as the favored child that Riot balances everything around.

all the defensive choices are shit when compared to the offensive ones going by gold value

Unless Rammus you Galio get Taric damage Malphite from Ornn defense.

Sire Hippington9 votes

They'd need much higher ratio for that to make a difference given how small the armor/mr values on the shards are.

ProfDrDeath2 votes

Gold values are not a good metric to compare stats you don't need to pay gold for.

If you look at the value of 10 AP and 6 MR, you'll find that they are, in fact, at least comparable: A 250 base damage, 0.8 AP ratio ability against a 0 MR/6 MR target. With 0 AP, the ability does 250/235.8 damage (94.3%) With 10 AP, the ability does 258/243.4 damage (94.3%) 10 AP increases this ability's damage by 3.2%/3.2%.

That same ability against a more realistic 36/42 MR target. With 0 AP, the ability does 183.8/176.1 damage (95.8%) With 10 AP, the ability does 189.7/181.7 damage (95.8%) 10 AP increases this ability's damage by 3.2%/3.2%.

That same ability with more AP (200). With 200 AP, the ability does 301.5/288.7 damage (95.8%) With 210 AP, the ability does 307.4/294.4 damage (95.8%) An additional 10 AP increases the ability's damage by 2.0%/2.0%.

Old scaling HP seals gave 12-216 Health.

This is just nothing.

TotalJerk6 votes

Should also be noted that you could mix them with flat health to get any amount of middle ground between flat and scaling you wanted.

Runes Reforged was a mistake.

People just don't seem to get it half the time aye?

They took away nigh infinite combinations and choice, then gave us back a renamed mastery tree with completely broken numbers. Then made us pay for it. And you STILL have to pay to make a tree that is anywhere NEAR useful. Like look at the default runes. They're trash for like 3/4 of the champ pool compared to the others. The only thing that hasn't changed is riot's ignorance and greed in acknowledging this. They literally fixed it by making runes 1IP each and then removed it like 1 month later.

WHat is logic?

PowerSlave9938 votes

Trust me, you want Anivia to have low health. That is such a cancer champ.

TotalJerk9 votes

I'm just using her as an example that even on the champion who relatively gets the biggest boost from this rune, it is hardly anything.

SEKAI5 votes

And they have to put all the actually good shit of the Resolve tree in the very same row too (Conditioning, Second Wind, Bone Plating).

Thanks, Rito!

CDR is fine. 10% is good.

Sire Hippington2 votes

the issue is that reaching lvl 18 is a rough confition these days. If it worked like transcendence and gave 10% at lvl 10, it would be great. But as it is, it just needs to long given the curren pace of the game.

chipndip13 votes

Well, think on it like this:

90 hp is a bit over 200 gold in value, whereas 6 or 5 armor mr is nowhere close to that value. So to balance it, they scale it in, but that makes it worse than flat resistances early, and kind of pointless later.

If it's too good, people will just flat out stack hp and not worry about typing specifically to threats. If it's too shit...well we see how we are now.

Meanwhile: You can get a solid amp tome in value by stacking adaptive force.

TotalJerk5 votes

I can sorta see that. The issue is that you can at least notice 5 armor or 6 magic resist in the early game. At no point is the health shard ever noticeable. Resistance shards are decent early and bad late. The health shard is completely useless early and slightly less bad late.

chipndip11 votes

Well, you can stack the health/Resistance shards with Overgrowth, Bone Plating, Second Wind, and effects of that nature. Defensive runes are super influential in the early game, and that plays a big part in why defensive STATS kinda take a hit...because defensive rune effects are kind of strong.

overgrowth was literally nerfed in half. its utter trash now.

second wind and boneplating have been put in the same row, which means you only gain 1 of the 2 options, which means early game defense took a hard hit.

Cause they're strong as hell in a combo

For tanks.

for anyone who buys more than a single health item. its absolute garbage now and not even worth considering.

also, resolve WAS supposed to give some scaling beef to tanks and juggernauts when other classes get scaling damage from their rune pathes.

at the very least it was generally aimed at a defensive playstile with stacking health and resistance items.

Cause they're strong as hell in a combo

debatable. boneplating wasnt crazy. it was just the only rune in that row that helps you fight champions and increases your power in lane, so that made it a default choice.

demolish wasnt really interesting before turret plating since they were weak as shit anyways (and now became mandatory in its place, so good job riot), and who the fuck even takes font of life? the two support tanks that exist?

I'll just drop this here.

Just so you know, mathematically, the hp per level is superior by far to the other choices in that slot. I was talking about this in another thread I started before, but no one cared.

To those that don't know, armor and mr essentially increase your effective health by 1% per 1 point. Since I'm thinking about this primarily from a solo tank/bruiser perspective. If I'm Naut, who starts with 576 hp and 35 armor, my effective hp against physical damage is about 778. If I was to add 5 armor to that, it would be an effective hp of about 806, which is a 28 hp difference. And Naut has a decently sized hp pool.

For the third row, I also have a serious problem with the hp choice vs armor or mr. For starters, the hp choice works against everything. It also increases the usefulness of your starting armor and mr. In the Naut example, it would add 20 effective hp against physical damage at level 1 with his starting armor, and it scales up. There is literally no reason to ever pick the 5 armor or 6 magic resist because you gain another 88 effective hp throughout the game against physical damage from just that before even considering level up armor or bought items. With his max level up armor the scaling hp shard actually gives him 179 effective hp against physical damage. The direct comparison would be 5 armor increasing his level 18 effective base hp by 101. While you can get more out of the stat if you're buying large pools of hp, you're obviously going to more easily get more out of the other stats unless you have a special scaling like Rammus/Malphite or if you're Cho/Sion, who can infinitely stack hp.

TotalJerk6 votes

Sure it scales to be worth more in gold near the late game, but not enough to be worth how useless it is in the early game. Especially since by the time lategame hits your items will be more important than most of your runes anyway.

... What? You have that completely wrong, HP / level is inferior in terms of effective HP, aside from increasing effective HP against all types of damage (which you can't put a value on).

However, these runes are only intended to help you in the early game and have virtually no impact late game. Which makes the scaling HP one even more questionable.

What bonus did you receive again from going resolve second? Wasn't it 15-135?

TotalJerk20 votes

That was if you took Resolve/Inspiration. End result was people not giving a fuck about the health bonus at all unless they were trying to hit the health threshold for stuff like Warmog's ASAP. You ultimately only took resolve for the runes.

AmetDeCrypt8 votes

not even then. most of the tank runes are utter trash. like second wind? who can honestly tell me they've used that and noticed any difference?

Fondling Gems3 votes

Full health mundo in ARAM with second wind is actually nice, but other than ARAM it is kinda shit.

playing as a melee champ against a ranged champ top it can help sustain against the constant poke you'll face. kind of like a second, slightly weaker, doran's shield passive.

even then it's more consistent to go lifesteal or spectre's cowl in some matchups.

Chrysalis and Boneplating.

Chrysalis turned into damage...

Bone plate wasn’t a stat... it was flat reduction occasionally.

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

People took Chrysalis for the extra flat health in lane which is defensive.

Bone Plating is also Defensive. It also generally saves you from much more damage than you seem to care about. It wasn't that unheard of for it to reach 700-800+ in a 25 minute long game.

1 armor gives 1% more effective hp... so at 3k health 10 armor and me would give me 300 more hp per trade. I’d take 10 armor any day. Bone plating is garbage compared to what old runes could give.
