Disable New Champions for a period of time in ranked.

Overwatch does it, why can't you? Brigitte is unplayable in Ranked at the current moment in Overwatch, as far as I can see on XBOX, (PC might be different). But it's harming peoples gameplay and ranking going against Kai'Sa players who've played maybe 2-3 games as her. I suggest just disabling new champions for a period of time. Either that, or new champions should require you to get to mastery 5 with them before heading to Ranked. Something to stop this blatant trolling .-. And I'll even make this a suggestion for reworked champions as well. Cause new Irelia will not be like old Irelia, players won't have the same understanding of her kit.

I think a system where it has 20 games before you can play a champion that just came out in ranked and then after after the period when the champion is no longer "new" then the 20 game lockout is lifted.

The route blizzard is going is really dumb. They're not letting anyone play Brigitte in competitive until the next season.

Only issue would be new champions would be pick/bans that are extremely hard to get to play because everyone would try to play it. 20 games would take definitely a long time to achieve, unless that system also came with [new champion]-only one for all gamemode.

I agree with you 100%. Banning new champs for a week for the sake of 'someone might first time them' is stupid if not applied to all champs. Even though he's not new, someone could go first time Azir. Same results as someone first timing the new champ. If we're going to outlaw new champs for x amount of time, we need to outlaw all champs for x amount of games played / mastery. It's great to see this idea getting upvoted. Last time I suggested champs be banned from rank based on games/mastery I got downvoted pretty heavily. Lol.

I'm not sure why it should even be possible to play a champ in ranked that you haven't achieved m7 with.

Well I mean that would limit so many people, cause if you suck with 99% of the champs with league and only have M7 on one, then you only have THAT one, you know? And what if they ban THAT one?

M5 is more reasonable cause it requires you to play ALOT of games on the champ to master them, and isn't hard to get to.

I doubt it. Looking through their posts, they say a lot of....less than intelligent stuff. Like multiple suggestions of wanting to remove downvotes altogether (Because they get downvoted a lot essentially), and things like that. Sadly they were serious here.

Reaper Claws1 votes

Silly idea, this is board and people have opinions. People are free to downvote if they want to show disagreement or concurrent with your thoughts. Anyone that is serious about getting rid of downvotes probably cries when you banter about them. (They can't a joke or anything of the sort)

I read a few more comment and saw him retract his statement, so you are probs correct. I guess i should have said I was hoping he was sarcastic haha

If he retracted his statement, he probably wasn't being sarcastic.

Not sure if you meant to respond to me here or something, I'm not sure. You are responding as if you are arguing a point with me when I agree with you here fully.

No im not arguing, I was just expressing how funny I think the idea of removing downvotes is. Sorry if it seemed like it.

This is still unreasonable. Why put a limit of 20+ games on a specific champion and think this can give you a desirable understanding of their playstyle? Kai'Sa is a pretty unique addition to League, she scales with AP, AS and AD so people can literally try whatever they want with her. And if she gets this requirement, than it would mean now every champion should also have the same requirement, having to play 20+ games on everyone to at least know for sure that players aren't "first time btw" kind of people.

Champion mastery should not matter. A lot of good players do not play the game enough to have that many m5+ champs. Meta slaves could not ever play the good champs. Like when skarner was good I played him in 2 norms, read his kit, and won 8/11 ranked games with him from little to no mastery points.

Furious Delisha1 votes

Even M5 is really too much... having to grind a backup champ all the way to 21k mastery points, which is 21-100+ games to play JUST to get access to a backup champ. Mastery 4 would be a fair compromise imo. 16k mastery points is 25% less, and the icon at least tells your team you played the champ some.

that's silly. that would force you to have to achieve level 7 mastery with at least 15 champions before you can even play ranked.

Dope Solo2 votes

Hmm, yeah point taken. Maybe at least M5 then.

Helmight3 votes

M5 is pretty needlessly restrictive. To pull an example from my own gameplay, I tend to play Kled or Urgot in the toplane. However, if the enemy team locks in Quinn, Jayce, or another lethality user for the toplane, I'll bring out Malphite as a counterpick. I don't play Malphite enough to have M5 on him, but I can certainly play him well enough for the matchup.

In a world where I can't play anything but M5 champions though, my options for counterpicking are severely limited. I either have to spend a bunch of time grinding a champion that I really only want to play occasionally, or have my champion pool's breadth arbitrarily limited. That's not a good situation to be in.

I am open to the idea of there being restrictions on new champions in Ranked, but there's no way that adding mastery restrictions would be a good idea.

Honestly i or many other players can play even a new champion to a good suggest fairly good on first time or at elast second/third time while other players just raw suck even with level 5. Level 5 jsut means you spam that champion but not realy means you also elarned much during it. Also very championspecific. i could see that m5 or m7 on a riven with her kit and animationcancels as wella s toplanematchups would be not abd (still it isn't like an exam tellin you realy learned this champion) but i don't need a m5 to play someone like nunu in the jungle. Most likly i probably not even need m2 for him.

not sure why this guy is getting downvoted this is actually a necessary change, but i would be satisfied with it being m5 so players will less likely feed on first time champs

because mastery 7 is only based on spending BE towards it. Better to tie it with Mastery points and not level. Like get 50k mastery then play it. M7 could still be 27k points and a couple S in normal games.

Good would be :

Permabann in ranked

Not banable in Normal Draft (for people that hate blind pick)

so people can have a free time to learn the champion till she is activated in ranked

IainG101 votes

Most soul-destroying thing is trying to learn a new champ; the champ is banned 80% of the time, and 18% the remainder someone else gets them first.

About a year ago this same question came up in the exact same form when Blizzard released Orisa, and disabled her from hero select. It too reached the top of The forums here on League of Legends. However Riot has already answered this question.

Some people only play league of legends for ranked. Ranked is their whole game. No bots, normal's, Aram, etc. Only ranked, and for that reason it would technically punish the people who want to play the new characters the moment they come out.

If you don't like riot's reasoning you don't have to because it's not your game and that's the hard truth. I don't like it either but we're just going to have to cope with it because it makes sense.

You have no business playing ranked to learn a champion or try out untested things.

If you play ranked, you should be aiming to seriously win, out of respect for your fellow teammates.

I always wondered why there were so many young kids in ranked on the weekend who didn't even care enough to stay in the game; but this mentality is probably why - they think it's ok to play ranked as their normal game mode, screw around, not care, and suck at it.

Magic Wizard Joe1 votes

Agreed, now try telling that to Riot.

Xonra2 votes

Kai'Sa wouldn't be so bad right now in a vacuum, but Riot buffed the wholy shit out of her too much, so you have to waste a ban or deal with either someone who actually knows how to play her (at this point it has been enough time), or someone who has NEVER played her and just derps around.

I do agree on the whole, cause nothing annoys me more than getting someone who clearly couldn't have played a champion enough to know what they are doing on day one in ranked.

Then again those same people play first time champs in ranked and feed when the champ has been out for years.

It is a matter of people being able to first time champs in ranked at all, not just new champs, but Riot can't be bothered to make ranked a better experience anymore in 2018 unless you want to queue up with friends more often, then they are all on that "improvement" bus.

Ýisus2 votes

You should be required to have mastery lvl 5 on any champion you play in ranked play (unless you have a 5 person premade).

Saezio2 votes

New champs? Either make Mastery 5 a requirement for ANY champ in ranked or not at all. Mastery 6 and 7 are stupid because one can not upgrade for various reasons and you can have mastery 5 and 1mill points on a champ because you simply like red color better than the purple and teal (why is it not real blue anyway?).

Diesis1 votes

That would cost riot earnings :/ It's better to have 2nd time kaisa rushing a deaths dance when ur a game away from promo.

Actually they have the code to disable champs, skins, and even runes already, it wouldnt cost them a dime.

TKM Axe1 votes

i only got 4 champions with m5. what if all of them get banned?

Pika Fox1 votes

I dont see how this would be beneficial. Sure, the person playing them is inexperienced with them, but this also means people wont learn their kits as easily, and drastically limits riots initial data collection of said champ's balance state.

JustCallMeSPED1 votes

Wouldn't it be a better solution to just play some unranked games with new champs to get a feel for them before going into ranked, doing some research by watching a streamer or two play, or playing safe in ranked in general when playing against a champ you don't understand very well? Why should others who like the new champ and have done the work not be allowed to use them in a ranked game?

Lunar Lunacy1 votes

I'm not really taking a side on this, because I don't really care either way personally, but I WILL say that some people only play ranked and see normals as a waste of time. And you can only improve so much in normals, you need to play ranked to improve further

IainG101 votes

But please, at least use Normals as a baseline; don't go fresh, first time into Ranked. You will get better than Normals can provide in Ranked, but that doesn't mean you should forsake them entirely....

Wolfeur1 votes

Smite allows you to pick only champions you have at least mastery 1 with.

BarbaJhini1 votes

Overwatch has no bans, would you like bans removed? Different game have different rules, it's stupid to do such a thing because 80% of the people wouldn't play normal anyways and when it is possible to play that champ in ranked it will be the same story as it is now. Requiring an X number of mastery points would be also not appropriate as you can have other accounts, as playing some champions require no specific mechanic but more about game knowledge, would be awful for new players especially when autofilled, and it is better to have a first time maokai top lane than having a 100k riven (just using as an example got nothing against riven) and lacking tank in the teamcomp.

IainG101 votes

You think people care about comp in Solo Queue?

I do, and there are others, but we are by far the minority, at least around my Rank.

Ranmaru1 votes

For bridgette you must wait another month for her lol overwatch understood her kit was meta changing so took action

Sukishoo1 votes

Even SMITE does it, new Gods are disabled for about 2 weeks in ranked. They should have done this years ago in League.

Then again, SMITE also makes it so you have to have at least a mastery 1 on them to use them even if they aren't the newest thing released.

Grubbling Butter1 votes

Riot prolly never gonna do it unless the game continues to lose more players and call it a "new feature no one wanted until now" idk

Overwatch has it? Dang. People have been clamoring about it for years on the LoL Boards. Every time a new champion is released the topic comes up. Players talk about how obvious it is to disable new champions.

RIOT has thought about disabling new champions for ranked. So it isn't that they aren't listening. But, as I understand it, they can't agree on what form the disable would take if they were to implement a disable. Even though almost anything would satisfy us, they are worried about the effect it would have. And the really big worry is that they will spend a lot of time implementing and then players will complain anyways when the new champion hits ranked (that new champion is going to hit ranked eventually). Because of that worry, they can't implement.

Personally, I think it has to be a set number of games or a set mastery level. The worry with requiring a certain number of games is that RIOT can't resolve if X number of games is so many that the burden is too great for players who want to play the new champion or too few for players to get enough skill to satisfy the player base.

Anyways, long story short, RIOT hasn't been able to resolve the conundrum to the extent that they feel confident implementing. To which I think we probably agree: just do something dammit! LoL, tell us how it goes with Overwatch when they do allow Brigitte into ranked play. Then come back and tell us how did or didn't work.

Just do something right???!!! like, even if it's for 1 season, if it turns out relatively bad, then don't do it, lesson learned? Not like things can't be reverted. Swear I've heard they were thinking of this since I started playing 3 years ago. I just want my lanes to be with people I know for a fact might have a better understanding of an old champ, rather than one they went 10/1 in norms with so they thought they'd "try" them in ranked.

Ranked isn't for "trying", Ranked is for skill, and one of the most skillful things to do in a game is go in blind with what you are using to fight with.

It's literally common sense really.
