There's one immobile mage that got forgotten about

Galio. And for the purpose of Athens unholy grail changes I'm thinking Galios runic bulwark should provide a small sheild so that blood charges will proc considering Athens was wondering one of Galios main items.

Galio deserves a Full VGU. He didn't get changed for the same Reason Swain was not gonna get changes either (initially) They would both deserve to get one of the big updates, but Riot learned from the Mordekaiser Failure and decided they'll both get a full VGU when it's their time.

Thats because they change the immobile tank ap carry to a shit adc with the worst mobility of the game and 1 flash-q burst attack rest of his abilities are 100% worthless.... Who had this brilliant idea? His only useful and fun kit is the dragon ghost which doesnt happen much often

Sahn Uzal11 votes

Riot made a mistake, they admitted they made a mistake, they buffed solo lane mordekaiser to a playable level and learned from that mistake so they won't do it again. And put Mordekaiser back on the VGU list What more can you even ask for at this moment? Don't be a dick.

BastionKross2 votes

learned from that mistake so they won't do it again.

Really? That's what they said when Cass got mangled in a rework. And Karma before her. And Eve. Or how about Ryze getting reworked once a season because each one is a failure?

Learning from mistakes, especially when it applies to large scale champion updates, is not a strength of Riot's. Right now, the only Red that I would trust to update a champion is RiotRepertoir, since he actually listens to criticism and takes action. Good luck getting CertainlyT or a lot of other Reds on the update team to do that.

I also would most definitely not consider Morde's .5% and .2% playrate in top and mid respectively to be a "playable level". Those are Galio and Urgot level numbers; and not acceptable for any champion.

Sahn Uzal4 votes

The mistake was taking a champion that needs a full VGU, and put them in a class update.

Galio is fine just take stormraiders. Also he needed to be squishier vs mages it was a reasonable nerf to change him from building athena to morellonomnomnomicon

VentusDragoon2 votes

The problem with that is his ENTIRE POINT IS TO BE AN ANTI-MAGE

But i like the little cocky smirk he has ;-; LIke it fits so perfectly when you see the enemy team go full ap and you last pick galio. :)

Galio's on target to receive a massive buff on thursday. He's going to be one of the most intimidating users of the new belt, which will allow him to dash into someone's face and hit them with basically a fifth ability.

charcharmunro5 votes

The dash is so minimal that I'm not sure it'll be as OP as people think. At best, it can help him out after a slightly miscalculated Flash.

WhatAGeinius3 votes

I mean it's effectively adding 300 units to the range of your abilities.

That's not insignificant.

Solidair32 votes

Combining it, flash, and his E's ms, it can definitely have a significant effect.

The dash is a vayne tumble.

So no.

That also gives Galio a bunch of stats he likes......it doesn't matter that the item isn't going to make Galio T0, but he will still probably buy it every game regardless.

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

Galio doesn't need rocket belt just take stormraiders.

Or, you know, you could choose both.

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

waste of a slot for rocket belt on galio over something else, you already have max cd from morel+abyssal+hourglass and stormraiders is better than rocket's active consistently. Would pref echo or the new ice item since that at least comes with the catalyst passive, mana in addition to the same stats with a better activatable to help your team which galio focuses on as a utility mage. And even if you go tank galio route you focus even more on utility so it's an overall better item than rocket belt for galio.

The only reason you'd go rocketbelt for galio is just for fun but otherwise there's much better items for him by a landslide.

They said they were only doing true immobile mages (such as brand). Galio falls into the "tank-mage" category and Riot said he probably needs a Poppy/Sion/Taric level rework instead of just a class update.

Others before you have asked and Riot answered :)

Orianna In a decent spot, others needed more work Karthus Not sure why they didn't do work on him, maybe they are thinking of doing a full update later along with Swain ? Heimerdinger In a decent spot, others needed more work Zilean Support primary, also in a decent spot Karma (now) Support primary, needs a full rework in my opinion

I don't think you can conclusively say those champs will be in a decent spot before the MYMU comes out.

They will be indirectly impacted by the sweeping changes to their itemization, especially Ori who actually builds Athene's due to her insane mana hunger. Maybe Morellos + Tear will be enough for her, maybe not.

Karthus' RoA got nerfed.

Heimer actually might be indirectly buffed because of the Zhonyas changes.

The point is they were unchanged despite big changes to their items. I'm not conclusively saying theyre underpowered or overpowered.

I was actually giving my two cents on why certain mages were picked for updates over others. I have no information on how the item changes will affect certain champions, but I don't think it will be as drastic as people think.

I've been playing with minimal mana regen builds over the last couple of weeks and having a butt load of mana + the meditation mastery doesn't feel any different then having infinite mana due to mana regen. The thing that will change is that you will eventually run out of mana if you aren't careful which will add another layer of mastery for playing a champion and create more fun encounters.

In addition it will define the good mage players from the average or poor mage players with their ability to manage their resources and know the limits of their champions. I also have no doubt in my mind that if certain champions just aren't playable due to item changes that Riot will address them in the coming patches, or just hotfix it if it is bad.

TLDR: Was commenting on my opinion for which champions got picked for this update over others. Mage item update doesn't look that bad, just different, doubt it will break the game.

Aight that's fair.

I'm a bit mostly worried about how difficult it'll be to turtle. With losing catalyst and chalice abyssal is really the only option for a mage that just needs to survive, but then you're not building mana. Mages that need both early might need tuning.

That's also fair, I'm reading over the official notes now and some items that will be good for surviving laning are:

  • Catalyst. Even though Valor's reward is much better you'll be able to sustain with spell casts, and taking poke gives you mana back so that you can heal some of the poke with spell casts. It's a vicious cycle, will probably be a must buy for a lot of champions.
  • Abyssal. Like you mentioned, though it may come down to making the choice, do it rush it or build my negatron cloak to not take as much damage, and then finish Abyssal later.
  • Lost Chapter >> Morellos. Gives mana, a buttload of AP, and restores max mana on lvl up (or assists/kill if morellos)
  • Tear (somewhat). Refunds a percentage of spell costs and increases your pool making it very efficient. Will have to see if it is a good item to get early or if it is too much of a risk.

Some other options you could go is double doran's rings and then build into your core items. 2 dorans should give enough early regen to get you through early game. The other option is going the economy route with picking up FQC which provides gold generation to slingshot you into other items, while providing some mana regen and okay AP.

Will have to see how it plays out, hopefully this helps with figuring out early items for you once the update goes out tomorrow :)

VentusDragoon1 votes

My only concern is Anivia. She was the only champion in the game that could build mana regen for all 5 items and make it work. Having a ton of maximum mana doesn't help when you keep your ult out a long time (and with her update, you'll be keeping it out even MORE than before.)

Ori is in a good spot, she's just underpowered but her kit flows amazingly don't know why you'd want anything reworked.

Karthus' kit is great he's just underpowered immensely and needs a buff no rework needed. Until those buffs come he'll feel underwhelming though.

Heim coulda used it....

Zil is in a godlike spot O_o

Karma isn't bad atm but could use a rework to please old karma fans :/ I just don't like her ever since.

Not really talking about kit reworks for them, just a bit of power tuning because a lot of their items are getting drastically changed.

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

Change of thought I also say all of them were buffed item-wize.

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

Honestly Karthus and Orianna are receiving item buffs. Karthus already went RoA and he can get it and tear earlier (last hitting with Q with Tear is probably damn near a full refund with E passive) and Orianna can just go Morello over Grail since Lost Chapter gives mana sustain in lane and Morello has Grail's old takedown passive now.

I wouldn't say " since the release of the game ", but by his very nature, TF can actually never do bad in the right hands.

Chaotic Reks8 votes

You've never seen Beta TF...

DrCyanide7 votes

Beta would be before Release, no?

R2D202 votes

Beta is commonly referred to as pre-seasons (before s1). TF had tp on his E and banner was a summoner spell. So your team could all take TP (except TF, who'd take banner) and he would level E first and portal between 1st and 2nd turret, place banner in bush and all the team would TP on it, free 2 kills (back then you couldnt see the TP in brush either).

MunchCrunchLunch1 votes

the only changes he need is for his E.

KushDid4201 votes

At least Galio got buffs and still does his job well along with being viable

Karthus has been gutted for no reason and ignored for the longest time from Riot. They actually think he's in a good spot right now...

My Waifu Vanilla2 votes

They probably just don't want to touch Karthus since any time he's strong he revolves the meta around him and starts 2-3 shorting people with isolated Qs. He's probably in the same boat as Gnar since they are both extremely volatile champions that have big impacts on the meta.

Troll for Trump1 votes

Heimerdinger Still annoying to laneagainst, and can be unimpactful a lot.

Sorta like a mage Illaoi, especially withthe 1v2ing too.

Or like LB, oppressive and unfun, but still unimpactful a bit of times.
