This is Ridiculous (Itemized Logic Included)
The gist of this post is that promo series cause a tremendous amount of grief but do not serve a legitimate purpose, and therefore they should be replaced by a more appropriate system.
Promotion series shouldn't exist. I get 30 LP per win, I got put at 90 LP after my failed promo series THREE CONSECUTIVE TIMES. Yes. I'm butt hurt, and we're going to sit here and have ourselves a little rant.
The reason this is bad is because:
- It empowers trolls because you cannot dodge Champion Select without losing the match automatically.
- It adds more random chance to ranked, a skill-based competitive game mode (When do you get your wins/losses?)
- It's nothing short of maddening to get a troll/AFK in one of the matches the system arbitrarily chooses is the 3/5 matches it will use to judge if you're skilled enough to compete at the next level up, weighing them disproportionately higher than other matches.
- Given that the system weighs LP gains (And LP after a failed series) judging upon where it thinks you belong, the Promotion system does not serve a purpose, as we clearly have the technological capability for the system to accurately judge where it should place you.
- Contrary to the defense provided by Riot in the past, it does not feel good to pass a promotional series. It feels like you endured and survived a needless and senseless mechanic. It's like being shot in the head, but surviving. Yeah, you survived, you'll celebrate, but you ideally would have never been shot.
- It's incredibly punishing to lose a Promotional match because of a troll or an AFK, because a regular Ranked match simply costs LP. This will waste several matches worth of effort AND THEN you lose LP. Again, they are arbitrarily weighted more, so when they're tanked by things out of your control, it's infuriating.
- The horrible feeling of losing a promotional series, especially several times, particularly when it isn't something you could've avoided, greatly exceeds how happy you are when you finally pass it. Again, it isn't a feeling of joy. It's a feeling of survival.
In conclusion, for all of these reasons, the Ranked system as we know it today is highly counter intuitive, and given that this is a GAME OF SKILL, it is unthinkable to me that they would allow a mechanic that actively increases the CHANCE aspect of it.
