It's 5:30 eastern time, my elo is low plat... how is this even happening? How can matchmaking be so slow when there's tens of thousands of eligible players within my pool at this hour.

Because you're queuing up as the two most popular roles. It doesn't matter if there's hundreds of players or millions of players in queue, the proportion of support players is still really low and that bottlenecks the system.

5:30 Eastern, That's like, 4:30 Central, 3:30 Mountain, and 2:30 pacific.

A good chunk of the North American players may still be at work or school.
