Auto fill is fine. TLDR @ bottom

You wouldn't have survived in older League. Believe it or not, we used to play by an unwritten rule (that just made sense) called "Pick Order" which actually got you the role you wanted maybe 20% of the time. Though calling out your suggested role, like in blind pick, would be taken into consideration with friendly players. Back then, you had to always have LoLKing or something up to hurry up and slap a link down or sell your personal stats.

Here's the worse part, if you're a top lane main like myself, you were really only guaranteed that position if you were a high pick had a person willing to trade. Keep in mind this is solo queue. So good luck not getting counter picked.

We pretty much had to be efficient at every role to an extent that you weren't dead weight. Sometimes you didn't even know what position you'd be until it was your turn to pick, so there wasn't any preparation.

At least when I'm autofilled, I can prepare for my role. Which brings me to old rune system, you had better had a page set up for everything. They were very specific! God forbid you forgot to change your Malphite rune page when you're playing Lux support. At least AAs won't hurt you nearly game lol

And to make matters worse, the "team leader" was responsible for all THREE bans! Meaning, if an asshole like me was playing Wukong top, you'd have to settle for the bans being Darius, Riven and Singed.

TL;DR Don't complain about awesome new role selection system if you haven't experienced or just don't remember the hell we had back in the early 2010s.

pick order.... oh god I forgot about that. "mid" nope sorry m8 you are 3rd pick. you get jungle, adc, support.

Modern league has made me fat and lazy. I can play Jungle support literally every game.

lol. I still prefer teambuilder.

My choice of what champion I play, My choice of what lane I play, My choice of what role I'm playing, and if the rest of the room wasn't okay with it then they could leave without getting penalized by a dodge timer.

Yeah that mode was great! Riot scrapped it though cause it wasn't popular and had huge wait timers for rooting out trolls.

Because now we defintely dont have even more trolls

I miss Teambuilder too... I liked how I could join a lobby and see exactly what my team was going to play. It was the only mode I played after I unlocked it because it was just flat out nicer than Draft or Blind. :c There was less toxicity in the lobbies, I had more fun, and it felt like I had more control over what I was going to be playing with. If I didn't like that Teemo Support, I could just leave. No retribution like a queue timer, no flame, no nothing. It was glorious. I 100% did not mind waiting either.

SoryInAdvance2 votes

Same. Let me do exactly what I wanted whenever I wanted. Didn't have to worry about my champion being banned. Even got some interesting mirror matchups occasionally. I guess that can still happen if blind pick is still a thing. I honestly don't even remember if it is lol.

what they really needed to do was just let you pick your position and then make every other position fill. Too many conflicts of interest in the old TB system

That's a surprisingly accurate comparison considering that shitting is kind of necessary for your digestive system to work.

the old system was better, at least people knew they had to know how to play the GAME well, not a role well.

I honestly have zero idea why people say the client is broke. Aside from being a mite slow i've never had issues with it.

True, but it's also true that the current system is much better than the old one.

Maybe it's because Riot put them in the game at the same time, but role selection =/= autofill. They are 2 separate entities that can exist together or apart.

We can have role selection without autofill, longer queue times are fine in lower elo. I don't care if I wait 5 minutes, as long as I get a good game and don't have to play a lane I don't normally play or deal with a team mate who doesn't know their role. I can't understand why people don't understand this.

That's not how it works. Without autofill, queue times will get increasingly longer until it becomes unplayable.

It was exactly what you said, there would be longer queue times. That's fine in lower elos, queue times going from 2 minutes to 4-5 isn't an issue. This only becomes a problem once you get to mid/high diamond.

Wolfeur2 votes

There is a difference between "a few more minutes" and "increasingly longer until it becomes unplayable".

A very sizable difference.

Unless support players are leaving every day, no, that's not what happens.

Yes, that is what happens. More people queue for other roles, so they pile up indefinitely.

I guess we never get new players, or people who decide to try support because they like it. Those people quitting and those joining are just the same people, it's all part of a grand plot by Riot to fool us all!

Wolfeur1 votes

You don't understand. By the time a support player joins the queue, more than one join in every other role. Support is a limiting factor, and without auto-fill, the other roles stack-up indefinitely because the demand is higher than the offer.

That's how a queue for roles works. Look at Dead by Daylight. Some days there are more killers than survivors one, so the queue is longer for killers. They don't change your role, and that game is thriving right now. We're not in a net loss, unless Riot is losing 3x as many players as it's gaining. There will always be a role that is the least popular, I'd rather deal with a slightly longer queue than get a free loss.

Pxerkza5 votes

and people acting like autofill is ruining the game when in reality everyone was autofill and the game balooned with it as a base

maybe it's true Riot should remove auto fill and remove positional queue as well make it like the old days when the ADC could play support as well make it like the old days when jungle knew how lanes functioned and didn't only care about his crab

really nostalgic

Midg3t5 votes

I played during the "Pick order" era and I didnt mind it, but I still dont like autofill because this system gives you an ability to pick the role you wanna play but at the same time it doesnt. What's the point of giving us a choice if we eventually wont have a choice and play something we dont want, unless youre a supp main so youre protected from autofill?

And keep in mind the system wont adjust teams based on the number of autofilled players. One team can have multiple people autofilled while the enemy team can have all 5 players on their main roles. So guess what happens then? Youre at a disadvantage.

Now sure, you could learn champs for other roles but then whats the point of this system if you still need to learn other roles just like before?

Either give us a complete control over our picks or dont give us control at all. Because this one just makes the game imbalanced and it's a literal coinflip.

TBH since PickOrder was removed the general game-knowledge went down alot.

Laners with no what so ever understanding how the JGL or Support plays (That starts with respecting item 4302 charges!)... JGLs with no clue how minion aggro/wavemanagement works (Yeah gank while there are 10+ Minions around.. GOOD IDEA!!!)...

And overall ZERO capeability of reading teamcomps and making decisions based on that!! Back in the days most (at least in gold and higher) had at least basic knowledge how to make what ever comp you picked work!

Nowadays you have Supports engaging in poke comps! People trying to splitpush with Malph/Fiddle in team that simply want to group and fight! Scaling Comps that have people FF15! 1-3-1 comps that try to 5v5 for SOME REASON!

Also, I didn't really have that much trouble getting the lane I wanted even without throwing lol-king links everywhere. Asking nicely and not complaining when truned down worked more oftem than not. I had above 50% ratio as midlaner! Alot higher when DuoQing (for obvious reasons).

And yeah the loss of general knowledge also affects me. I was a decent JGL, ADC and Support back in the days! These days me JGL equals an auto-loss! And me supporting only works out if my ADC is at least decent... but I can no longer actively carry them despite the carry potential of supps went up drasticly over the years...

I should edit this into the original post lol Back in 2012 it was unheard of for somebody in gold 4 or higher to not know every champ and every role equally. Even if you don't like support, you knew how to play the bot lane matchup and how to build.

Nowadays you have players in high gold that still don't know not to walk into a bush to kill a low health Vayne if you can't ward it.

What nostalgia world do you live in? Those were the time of 100% Kassadin and Shen/Amumu/Malphite triple ban virtually every game.

GripaAviara3 votes

No, the current role matchmaking is fine and way better than the mess.

I always advocated for role matchmaking like this, but current autofill has a huge flaw.

You have these specialized teams now, each player with its proficient role. And they amped up the snowballing. So things can go sideways easily with an oblivious autofill

And let's say TOP, MID and ADC gravitate around the same lane rule: farm, poke, lane pressure. Autofill between those is okeish . But then you have Supports and Jungle, which are different. So having a player that has no clue supporting vs a seasoned support can be a total mess as he will probably feed or let them poke you out of farm with applying pressure. Same with jungle. And because of that fking high damage, you are trapped in a game with little chance of winning.

Now, obviously auto-filled has to stay in a form or another. But if a team has a role auto-filled the system has to autofill in the enemy team also on the role. It won't be perfect, but it's a step up imho

KalokasIsMyDaddy3 votes

Aren't you just explaining how the old system worked here? Just because we had a shit system before doesn't mean we should have this pile of shit. Either remove autofill or bring back team builder.

Levy McGarden2 votes

Yes, old league matchmaking sucked. But most people who want autofill removed do not want to go back to old matchmaking. They want to go back to the earliest days of the current system, before autofill was implemented. It was only implemented because queue times got "too long" (apparently ~2-3 mins at every elo that is not challenger). I personally would rather wait 10 minutes for a single champ select than have 5 champ select dodges in a row only to get inevitably autofilled myself since every other filled person ragequit. I would rather wait 10 minutes for a single game than have a trolling bot lane because support got filled and instalocked Zed with ghost/cleanse. There was a good era of matchmaking and that was better than the tilting mess we've got now.

Zed genius2 votes

I still prefer the old system.

Sir EatsAlot2 votes

Why not make it so that you can choose whether you want autofill enabled or disbaled? This way people that dont want to wait 5mins can enable it after a certain period of time or right from the start, whille those that dont mind waiting can keep it disabled.

Warix32 votes

Just because it was worse in the past, doesn't mean it can't be even better right now. You are mixing the pick system with the autofill system. Autofill is there just to make the queue times shorter, nothing more. And it would be much better if there was an option to simply disable autofill and you won't get autofilled but you may need to wait more in the queue. I would use that feature because I dodge when I get autofilled anyway. And I'm sure many other people would do the same, even if not, it's good to have that option. And the pick system would still stay the same.

Yenn2 votes

You spent a roughly equal amount of time playing every role in the old system. You were in practice with all roles. The game was also significantly slower, so burden of knowledge wasn't a huge issue, and you could get away with not having intimate knowledge of every single match up for your champion.

With the new system, you get one of your desired roles 80% of the time, and the other three roles 7% of the time each. You're completely out of practice with them, because you never have to play them, even if you know how. With balance changes, you no longer know all of your possible match ups. The game is faster, so one early misplay or overestimating your damage will get you killed and snowball your opponent out of control.

Try only playing jungle in 1/16 games, then going into a game and trying to play it against a Diamond+ jungle main on a champion they have 500k mastery with.

The game wasn't remotely the same thing that it is now in 2014 and the two can't be compared. This post is terrible lmao
