Is Malphite permabanned because of the AD meta or because he is actually broken?

Holy fuck, I want to play Malphite but I cannot because he is usually the first champion to be banned on almost all of my matches. He is really strong, but is him that strong to the point that he needs to be banned every match, or is that just the meta, in which Malphite is strong due to the insanely popular AD champions?

Malphite has always been strong.

He is extra strong against an AD meta

He is extra extra strong when his greatest counters get gutted (Ex: Rumble Ryze Maokai Elise Swain etc.)

Gragas and TahmKench and Nautilus were also nerfed and they were incredibly effective counters to Malphite

DrMundo is the only other one that I can think but Mundo does not offer the same amount of CC and utility as Malphite.

There is also Vladimir but again, Vladimir does not offer any utility to his team (other than the "AoE Deathfire Grasp" from his ult")

Shen was reworked and for some reason people don't play him.

AS you can see, Malphite tends to lose against tanky APs, but most of them were nerfed or do not have the same level of utility as Malphite, therefore he can still outscale them during teamfights.

It's the AD meta.

Malphite, Rammus, and Taric all become better during an AD meta, because their kits synergize especially well with Armor.

He is just really strong in lane, and his ult is game changing and easy to land. Plus in low elo its murder when people aren't thinking and they just wander into free ults.

Theres only 4 get em! *Malphite ults from behind the wall, splat

Hes like an insta fiddlesticks. lol

Both.

His effort to reward ratio is pretty damn high and he's a safe pick as well since his lane counters are either shitty or very unpopular.

actually broken

AD Meta mostly, but I've had a few too many games lately where a pure AP Malphite ults the back line and kills us all before we can do anything, so forgive me if I ban him for a while until I get over that.

Malphite is not really OP, but his Ult is incredibly strong in Teamfights. He is really good against AD team comps, so right now where AD itemization is the best so everyone is picking AD champs, he is a strong pick. He is stronger now than he use to be, but he was always strong thanks to his tankiness and his ult. However this season in particular is special because a lot of teams are primarily AD and most of his counters are not in a great place.

If you want to pick against him or just know some champions that currently are pretty strong against him in lane, here are a some of the champs I consistently have trouble against.

Poppy - Tanky with lots of Damage, not much you can do to her but plenty she can do to you.
Galio - This is actually my go to pick against Malphite, he is strong and you can't hurt him.
Darius - Just a really strong early game bully, he can poke you, out sustain you, and ignores your Armor plus free Armor Pen with is E.
Fizz - He deals Magic Damage so you can't make use of your Armor benefits, plus his troll pole can dodge your ult.
Gangplank - The barrels are so annoying...
Gragas - Gragas is tanky, deals a lot of damage, and has just as much CC as Malphite, however the main reason he wins in my opinion is because he can out sustain Malph.
Maokai - Mao deals Magic Damage, is tanky, has %Hp damage, and can willingly take significantly less damage.
Nautilus - Tankier with more CC, better at 1v1 dueling than Malph is.
TahmKench - Broken amounts of damage for only building tank, plus his damage is Magic Damage.
Trundle - His ult makes him auto-win fights and he can dive you easily.
Vladimir - Obviously because he out sustains and deals Magic Damage.
MonkeyKing -- Wukong can reduce your Armor and can harass Malphite before he gets too tanky, I have been on both sides of this fight and never expect Wu to win yet he almost always does...
Yasuo - This is an odd one but Yasuo's damage early game is ridiculous and his Flow can block a significant amount of Malph's damage. His ult gives him bonus armor pen and he is highly mobile.

He's not OP, just pretty much no actual counter champions since they all got nerfed, and really good in this format particularly.

He's just so reliable. Leaving him up is incredibly risky if someone on your team isn't planning to pick him because it's incredibly hard to go wrong on him and for how little risk/effort there is involved, the reward is huge. The community knows this, too, so you know there's a good change he'll be picked if he isn't banned.

A champion that can be incredibly impactful with basically no margin for error is always a good ban, and as long as Malph is FOTM he's one of the best ones.
