Why is there a support role when no one wants to play it?

Serious question. Why not remove it and rework the support champs? Support just isn't fun for 95% of the playerbase.

I uh, I gotta disagree with you there. There are Nami mains, Thresh mains, Blitz mains, those who like to play Annie or Lux support, non-meta support players, Zileans of Zileans players who like to mid or support, there are Alistar players, there are Taric players (and more soon), there are several other champions that get their spotlight and their use in the support role. As a Thresh main myself, I can definitely say that reworking the champions is a terrible idea and can definitely go against the whole, "95% of the player base doesn't find it enjoyable." You may not find it entertaining or amusing to outplay with a Q or an E, but, there are those of us who do, and we enjoy it, so, please, refrain from downplaying another role in the game that quite literally carries you into the mid-game.

Here is why- A team comp needs a diversity of both damages, utility, and tankiness. Note how most of the time, top laners, junglers, and supports build tanky(ish). Also, note how lots of mid laners, and supports are used for utility. With all the other roles having damage besides support, its their job to keep their team alive, and either peel for their squishy adc, or try and distract the enemy team. Have you ever tried a game where you have 2 adcs? You can feel the difference. The gold income items, made for the supports, allow them to still stay in the game and do their job, which is to not take kills, but to set them up. While you might think that the other members get ALL the glory, they really don't. You just need to get your ADC fed, and after that you can go run around and be a douchebag to the enemy team. If you like being that douchebag whose job is just to troll the enemy team, not kill them, that's what support is for.

Because all teams need that one guy that saves your ass once in a while and not another damage dealer that will steal farm from each other while the enemy adc has double your bot lane's farm.

I play support, I just play it in the top lane. I play tanks so I go in and take the damage, start the fights, (and most likely die) but so my team can get the kills.

Support isn't always in the bot lane

A lot of people enjoy support. They're called masochists.

Jokes aside, there are people who enjoy the support role (and it's more than 5% of the playerbase). People that complain on these forums are not a large part of the actual playerbase in league.

Not everyone wants to get a bunch of kills. Some people just want to keep people safe or help others get their kills or secure objectives.

If the game was build around getting kills, then the tank and the support role wouldn't really exist as they aren't meant to kill.

But it's not team death match, it's an objective based tower defense.

The same ones that enjoy support role are the same ones from MMOs that enjoy playing the Priest/Cleric, Bard/Minstreal, and Guardian/Paladin.

I, personally, love playing support. I've never been good at knowing when to dive and when to gank, but if I can sit back and keep my teammates alive (I'm mostly a Nami, Lux, and Soraka main), then I feel like I'm helping a hell of a lot more than I would be by playing an ADC or a top laner.

LOL the meta isnt defined by whats fun, its defined by what wins.

support role is the most efficient way to build a team. jungler means you have 3 laners getting solo gold, and 3 players on your team getting solo EXP.

the duo lane doesnt have to split gold because the support role is built around being roughly the same usefulness with...or without gold.

for example: janna, braum, blitzcrank, etc....all largely do the same thing with or without gold. so they are efficient in a role that won't get gold and now you have one more carry who can get gold all to themselves.

nothing is stopping anyone from having 5 people split gold across the board, and in lower elos as support you can just take the farm your team "wastes" by letting it hit tower, but when the game is played as it should be...the team with 4 gold income + support flat out wins vs the one with 5 gold income but two of those are splitting. you have two weak members and they only have one.

I agree, They should rework some and add more fun support champions. I don't feel fine playing off meta support because the support ones are banned.

Wtf dude, I piss so much when I play support I randomly flash and juke somthing or missclick ward, maybe even fail doing something, I laughed soo hard when I saw support player Kill steal marksman with item 3800 . Support is the most fun role in game, it not played a lot because many people want Kills or be unstoppable or be a vampire who never dies.

Well, I guess you guys got some good points. From the supports I've played and seen, pretty much all of them strikes me as ridiculously boring to play. Zilean is an exception with the bomb spam, love the guy. Maybe simply an attempt to make them more fun is the right answer.
