If Riven "omg no sustain so weak"....
... why don't people start Doran's?
Legit question, never played her but my
birds can tell for sure that some HP and lifesteal wouldn't hurt her lvl 1.

Lifesteal only works if you can actually autoattack the minions. In some matchups you simply get zoned from cs and thus a doran's blade start only gets you 7 ad and 1 potion, while a longsword start would get you 10 ad and 3 potions. You would never want to start with doran's blade against, let's say, Teemo or Darius (unless you do a jungle camp ofc).
That makes sense, a lot of it. But I've literally only seen longsword starts.
Longsword+3 is the best start if you don't have tp, as it lets you rush brutalizer faster. If you do have tp, doing a camp and buying dorans+5 is the best as it gives huge amounts of sustain. Another possible start with tp is jungle camp -> longsword+5+ward, but I much prefer the dorans+5 start as it lets unskilled players like me do a LOT of mistakes without losing lane.
dorans sheild would help her sustain...but dorans blade would not.
Really? She has empowered autoattacks = more damage to lifesteal on than regular autoattacks.
Doran's blade has lifesteal. Both are sustain based early buys.
Big spammable shield + one of the strongest level 1-11 in the game. She doesn't need sustain because she can't really be bullied by anyone other than Darius, Garen, and Renekton. Besides her standard start is Longsword + 5 pots.
Well, as I said, with both my main toplaners, Quinn and Swain, I consistently make them ragequit, and with Nasus I generally survive decently until level 5/8 where I just force her out of lane every time she comes. I rarely lose to Riven, both lane and game.
Because Longsword+3 pots gives you most dps and immediate sustain. You have to aa to proc lifesteal, and even then it's 3%. You'll be healing what, 2hp for each hit on a minion?
