Runglaive blows

Serenity Now··70 votes·8,274 views

Was hoping it'd end up being an AP Tiamat/Hydra, but...

a) the damage is low until you have a good amount AP b) you have to chain low CD spells to make good use of it

By the time you meet condition (a), assuming you have an AP jungler that meets condition (b), you really don't need the splash damage.

This thing ranks down there with the Devourer upgrade. Gimme Magus back :(

Literally everyone but Riot knew this item was going to be worthless lel

They stated they think "Magus was too specific" then gave us Runeglaive. WTF riot.

TheRainInSpain5 votes

Ikr, Runeglaive requires an AP champion that rotates spells relatively fast and auto attacks as part of their primary damage source. Technically it helps AP junglers like Diana, Ekko, and caters almost stupidly around Udyr, as they are AP junglers that rely primarily on auto attacks to power their kits. But quite a few normal spellcaster junglers got gutted. I ask if Riot Item Development even plays their own damned game.

Sire Hippington3 votes

sadly, they were kinda right, Magus was only usable for ap champions that could clear the jungle well with only a machete, which weren't exactly much. Adding meaningfull mana sustain to magus would have transitioned to either increased gold costs(probably won't happen as they seem to keep all enchants at 2250g) or lower ap(however, a wattered down morellonomicon would have been way less specific than a sheen item...)

Blue Moon Wolf4 votes

and they spent an entire rundown trying to convince us it's useful. why is the patch rundown reduced to riot popping up to try and convince us the worst thing they added is good when we know it's not?

Aboylova9211 votes

I saw someone bring this up before. Generally speaking, Lichbane isn't a great first item on an AP caster, same with why Death cap isn't a great first item generally. You need more AP to really make it worth while, although Death cap isn't as bad as it does give you a lot of AP.

Runglaive should have been brought in as an option, but to get rid of Magus, an item that no one was complaining about except for the mana issues, just seems odd. They could remove 10% of the 20% CDR, give the mana that Runglaive has, or something similar, and Magus wouldn't have been in a better spot than this item is. And the handful of AP junglers that will use it really could have used the old Magus better for the most part.

Why does Riot replace things? Why not just add more

AND HAVE DIVERSITY.

I liked Magus because that CDR and high AP. I enjoyed playing tank champions like a tank AP.

I'm convinced riot doesn't listen to us pbe players. We told them this was crap, we told them Ryze was silly, we told the. ekko needed mana cost on his ult, we even told them the 2nd version of BC was insane.

Ancestor0074 votes

At least Ekko's ult has a mana cost now

Sire Hippington3 votes

it has a mana cost NOW if they would use the PBE feedback, he would have had that on release PBE is prettymuch only for bug-fixing, and i can somehow understand why. There isn't a huge playerbase, so the matchamakeing is worse than in dominion + non NA players have a horrible ping, not the best situation to actually test balance. However, if the entire consens of the PBE imunity is that something won't work witht he current numbers(like item 3508, which was changed two times afte release and still isn't in a great spot ), it probably is something that should get looked at....

Q1 2015 - 7.1 Million Subscribers for WoW.... That's $106,500,000 monthly recurring revenue for those non-math kids in the audience. Doesn't look "killed" to me. It's still one of the only two monthly charge MMO's surviving and FFXIV is limping more than surviving, don't know anyone that still plays it. Ignorant kids saying WoW is "dead" - get off the internet, stop reading other people's opinions and get some opinions of your own.

Haven't played with the Rune Glaive yet, but the only AP Jungler I see it being good on are the AP AA junglers which would be... Diana... and... I think that's it. I've been building Cinder on Diana in lieu of Magus personally - I'll wait till I actually play with it to drop judgment.

Diana doesn't spam spells, so it's crap on her as well.

AP Ezreal might be able to jungle with it. He's got a kit that constantly interleaves spells and autos.

You don't need to spam spells to make use of it, but Diana does weave spells in between her auto attacks, which are already enhanced by her passive, so she does make use of the item.

yes and no. if you spam spells, you're just going to go oom fast. she has pretty high mana costs. after a few clears you can get away with just using her shield and then autoing camps to death since her passive is AOE. She's never had problems clearing which is what runeglaive is meant for. its just a bad item

It's not a bad item, especially on Diana. She has decent clears already and this item helps clears, it's not a redundant thing for her if it helps her whip through the jungle. Plus it gives mana sustain so she can spam spells, or at the very least weave them in between her auto attacks, both in the jungle and ganks.

Saying that it's not good because it helps her do something she was already decent at is like saying Cinderhulk isn't good because it helps the tank junglers that had decent clears clear even better

UNSEENRE4PER3 votes

Dracid means that the extent to which it makes her better at what she already excells at is neglible. For example if you're an ADC and you already have 40% LS, would you really want to spend gold getting 5% more when you could potentially buy other stats that decrease your other weakness(crit,AD, armor etc). Her JG clear with AS and some AP is crazy good already. Magus is soo much better than RG.. AP+ CDR gives you much more return throughout the whole game then two amp tomes worth of damage from RG. The AOE passive isn't that good considering she already has her passive. If they made the ratio of the proc significantly higher so that it scales well, then it would be worth it. But as it stands they should have either allowed both items to exist, simply change magus, or buff RG.

To be fair Elder Scrolls Online is limping along as well, I feel like if you're going to mention FFXIV you should probably mention ESO too.

ESO dropped their subscription fee, didn't they? He was specifying MMOs with monthly fees.

I've also been using Cinderhulk on Diana, and after having used Runeglaive... I'm going to keep using Cinderhulk. The extra beef is more valuable than the mana restore. Especially early game when your completed jungle item and boots is most of your build.

You literally have to build ~3 items in before it actually starts being beneficial. Unlike Cinderhulk which is good as-is and just keeps getting better as you add more items. Because you literally need a larger mana pool to make the %restore feature worth anything and you need a nice chunk of AP before the spellblade effect is worth anything...

ChaoticPinecone2 votes

Compare it to what it used to have and how much it spikes whenever there is a new expansion, and it looks pretty bad to me. It peaked at 12 million in 2010. It dropped to lower than 6.X million in 2014. New expansion at the end of 2014 gains 3 million, then loses it just as fast.

WoW is practically dead. Its relying on its current subscribers to keep it going - without further recruitment of subscribers, its going die eventually.

unless you have the actual revenue figures, please dont propose how much they are making monthly. Your number is the absolute most they could make per month, with everybody paying $15 a month. This doesnt include the free month you get when you buy an expansion, and it doesnt include the discounted price for buying 6 months.

Diana, Evelynn, Udyr, Fizz, Ekko, Kassadin and Nidalee can benefit from Runeglaive well.

What people are upset about is that Runeglaive replacing Magus is a massive nerf or indifference to the viability of all the other AP junglers, which makes up around 60% of the AP jungler pool. Runeglaive also doesn't particularly synergize well with the previously semi-viable AP champion pool. The mana sustain is nice, but this group is almost entirely spell based, not auto attack based. I've never seen a Lich Bane Heimerdinger, for instance.

The only thing that was needed was mana sustain on Magus. That was it. And it would have been an acceptable nerf if 20% CDR was reduced to 10% CDR to get that mana sustain.

agreed 100%. magus was an item that was actually good on ALL AP junglers where as glaive is good on only a select few. the only reason they added it at all was for the mana regen, which they could have easily put on magus and still have the item viable to every AP jungler rather than just a select few.

AP Amumu, Fiddlesticks, APNunu , APRammus, APZac really got screwed over.

junglerboy167 votes

yeah, they really low balled it pretty substantially. You need a substantial amount of AP for it to even deal as much damage as Iceborn gauntlet, and it has almost as little AP while offering less mana and no armor, and only after being close to OOM and using it on several camps do you even equate having an Iceborn gauntlet in terms of total mana. They need to give it at least 80 AP and bump up the base AD component of the proc to 100% AD and 40% AP so that it is stronger early game like it ought to be.

Frikgeek4 votes

You really don't need that much AP to deal as much damage as IBG. The difference is 50% of your base AD and it scales with 30% of your AP. Even at lvl 18 where most AP champs would have ~100 AD you'd only need 166AP. At lvl 9 or so where your base AD will probably be around 70 you'll only need 116 AP. This item provides 40 AP so knock that number down to 76. Is it really that hard to get 76 AP by midgame with standard runes, masteries, and a few doran's rings or components for your next item?

Runeglaive proc is 175% base AD, sheen is 200% and IBG is 225%. You also get good mana sustain and AP scaling for later.

Sire Hippington6 votes

I think the concept of rungliave is still an improvement to magus, as it makes those ap-junglers that were niche picks actually viable while mages worked neither with magus nor with rungliave very well. However, it is a bit undertuned right now. If it would atleast scale with 100% base ad so your not forced into a ap-heavy built to make use out of it, it would already be far better. But mostly, it should give mana also vs champions. Imo it should be a worthy replacement of Athene's or Morellos for mana sustain, but right now you need aditional mana as it only keeps mana flowing in the jungle, and as soon as you got a stand off or drawn out fight, you will run dry.

In order to give real mages acces to the jungle, more changes would be needed, as they not only struggle with mana issues, but also health sustain, and they mostly struggle befor completeing the frst item, so they would need sustain buffs on the second Machet upgrade.

tbh I always just got item 3713 and then item 3165

If I want a Spell Blade item, I'll just get item 3713 then item 3100.

When you really think about it, item 1039 ---> item 3713 (or Challenging Smite or Poacher's Smite or Chilling Smite) is just the rough equivalent of Double Doran's Ring/Blade for Junglers.

SmokinSickStyle3 votes

item 3070 Fiddlesticks item 3070

Honestly i don't know why when people told Riot to keep Magus and release Runeglaive they just completely ignored it.

Honestly they talk about diversity, and all they do is reduce builds to few standard ones, they are also changing AP items, something totally unneeded sinnce we still have poor AD itemzation compared to AP, AD get items removed meanwhile AP get another item when one is removed + individual champ buffs.

Fiddle now is just gonna get the jungle item for smite and rush other non jungle items, taking 1 slot because magus is removed (at least until you have enough gold to replace it, like Rengar usually does.).

The Ecdysiast6 votes

Riot ignores everything. Check old threads. Reds have told players that the forums are for Player to Player communication, NOT for feedback because their employees aren't required to look at the forums at all.

They don't have a way of giving feedback that'll actually be read.

SmokinSickStyle3 votes

In fact i was talking about PBE people, isn't that a server made specifically to give feedback?

Literally anybody that plays there and cares about the feedback actually does warn Riot, if PBE is not looked after to, why even having it, if the real test comes only when it's Live.

PBE shouldn't be the VIP early access to content that is yet to be released.

The Ecdysiast4 votes

But that's all it is. PBE "can't check for balance" because it's not pros or diamonds, it's a hodgepodge of players. So they don't use it for that. It can't check for item balance, either.

It's just to check bugs. This is also info from Reds in previous threads. I get along on the forums more than the game sometimes.

Riot doesn't care about customer relations and feedback, just money. If you'll keep playing because there are 115 other champions to use who won't buy that item, they don't care if it blows.

See item 3508 , item 3504 , item 3156 , item 3023 , item 3050, item 3056, item 3091, item 3721 item 3722 item 3720 for more examples.

TheRainInSpain3 votes

I don't get it. Pros/Masters make up less than 5% of the game. It's not like they give Riot 95% of their income (even though Riot orgasms each time there is LCSBIGPLAYS). If I'm testing stuff for a wide range of customers, I wouldn't want a very specific customer type to dictate my changes for 100 different other customer types. The hodgepodge should be what they want. It isn't, though ....

The Ecdysiast2 votes

I've said this to Riot Support and all I got was "we aren't equipped to answer that question, please refer to the boards."

Exactly. It's like they WANT their business to be known for its poor customer service and feedback. They don't even realize that the majority of players are unranked.

SpecterVonBaren1 votes

Because Magus was a bad item? Excellent stats, highly gold efficient, and... absolutely nothing else, it was the very definition of a stat stick. It doesn't even have the sustain passive of what a lot of people call the quintessential stat stick RoA.

SmokinSickStyle2 votes

So we replace with an even worse one?

Honestly 80 AP and 20% wasn't that bad at all, you would sell it later on anyway once you reach full build, now i'm not gonna even bother buying any outside the one that changes the smite + the extra gold from camps.

Fallen Soraka3 votes

In my opinion, it's cool, but it could use some more power in it. The 40 AP is barely anything. It's a good amount for the item, but looking at that number '40' in the shop, it really makes you not want to buy it. If they were to buff it's AP to 50 or 60, it'd be a lot more appealing by looking at the numbers. But other than the low AP count, it's a good item. The passive for it is really strong for an AP jungler, but very few are AA reliant which is what the item tends to lean toward. I went in a custom game as Fizz and I was clearing the camps really quickly with an E and a Q, but other junglers have problems. Diana would work well with it because she has a ton of AA's thrown out when she fights, but pure mage jungers would have probelms with it. The 10% cooldown reduction is a cool bonus. It's not the old 20% of Magus, but it's a different item. I sort of have a problem with the item is the mana sustain. It's not terrible, but it's not really good. 8% missing mana restored isn't terrible, it's actually good when you're on low mana, but when you're at a higher level of mana, it's not so well. I'd think a good, flat 6% max mana restored would be cool and really strengthen the item, but the 8% missing mana is balanced.

So, they should really just increase the AP it gives so it looks more appealing on paper, because the item is pretty good in itself, but it's AP isn't visually appealing.

Frikgeek1 votes

They really can't buff the AP if they want to keep all the enchantments at the same price. It builds from Sheen so you get 15 AP, 10% CDR, an AP scaling AoE Proc, and mana restoration for 200g. Up that even higher and that 200g will end up being too spikey. Maybe 45 would be fine, but anything above that and that 200g will be too important forcing you to play safely and farm up when you're close to it. You don't want to end up getting killed when you're 100g short of your enchantment.

They could always make it get additional AP for killing large monsters (up to a finite limit) like the Spirit of the Spectral Wraith did last season.

Vekkna3 votes

But the 1200 gold for the sheen is also the second most expensive ingredient for an enchant. Warrior has the most expensive ingredient, but you get a tangible power boost to AAs while building the ingredient and the majority of the enchant power from completing the ingredient.

In retrospect, Magus had a much better cost curve for a mage since mages tend to be more reliant on early boots than the more mobile fighter and tank junglers. You could get 10% cdr, 30 AP, and boots for under 1200g on second back.

Now you get 200 mana, 20 AP, and boots for around the same cost on second back, which is pretty much fucking terrible. This is also around the time where lane momentum becomes clear, and ganks become necessary. This is a pretty weak place to get stuck camping lanes, and you can't exactly farm up another 1000 gold in a jiffy to finish a jungle sustain item that translates to very little ganking power.
