League of Legends Rank System is Unfun.

Basically what I mean is that the ranking system in low elo mostly is based mostly on luck, more than it should be. Its also incredibly painful and difficult to climb out. Most of the game is decided before you enter the champion select. The "Noobs" "Trollers" "Feeders", these are all decided for you before you even join the game.

So basically in bronze in comes down to "What team has the less feeders and trollers and ragers". Not only is this incredibly demoralizing the second you start thinking about it, but then you notice that the League system goes out of its way to make it even harder to climb.

For example, you gain 15 LP, and then you lose 25 LP, because the game doesnt like you for some reason. Furthermore this makes it super easy for a player who is on "tilt" to go bronze being bronze 1 all the way to bronze 3. Undoing what could possibly have been months of hard work and trying to climb in a few hours.

Another affect this has is the creation of a type of League player. The "Rager", "Troll" and "AFK". However this does not take in to account people who are naturally ragers or trolls, this just takes into account a normal league player who is changed.

For the Rager, basically, they've lost so many games, they dont want to lose another, and if it looks like they are losing, they lash out at their teammates, verbally abusing them. These people are when you think about are victims of other ragers and the system. Furthermore, the rager is a step in the direction of the Troll.

Basically, the Troll just doesnt really care anymore, hes resigned himself to staying in Bronze forever, and he hates it, so therefore he will resign himself to bringing down his teammates, and won’t hesitate to feed, he still plays League Rank, on the offchance that he might get lucky and climb a little.

The "GG AFK', out of all of the others, this one would be the most broken out of them all, hes at the point that hes lost so many games, and failed so many times, that even the slightest failure will set them off into feeling like they just wasted more time, they will then proceed to afk because they simply to have the effort anymore to try to come back in a game they "think" is lost, even if it really isn't.

I would go into the issue with pickorder and getting the roles and champs you want, but teambuilder rank is heading our way, so I’m not gonna bother.

There is so much wrong with the League of Legends Ranked System. So much has to change, ive only listed some of the effects of the current Ranked system off the top of my head.

So, im not really expecting any change, or anything to happen because of my post. I just wanted to make it known.

In this thread I will give you the only thing you ever need for climbing.

Good Luck, hope you climb.

~From someone trying to climb.

P.S. Play Rank Team, its very fun and it literally eliminates every single bad element of rank. I’m gonna just start playing only rank team. It’s competitive but fun, and after playing a bit of it, I realize, I don’t feel nearly as upset and mad after losing, maybe it’s because I can say with 100% certainty “they deserved to win, they were better”, something I’ve never said in solo q.

While luck does play a part in individual games, long term it comes down to skill.

Lugg3 votes

Skill can only go so far when you have someone on your team AFK or feeding like an all you can eat buffet. I have one or both happen EVERY day I play. I have had multiple games where I have played about as good as humanly possible and still lost. Some teams cannot be carried by anyone.

Riot needs to make it where you don't lose LP if you have an AFK and double LP if you can actually win one of those games. That would make the ranking system so much more accurate on who moves up.

Daedalus8713 votes

But those are single games. Over the course of the season though, it should balance out.

Your team has 4 spots for afks/bad team mates (if you're either one then your in no spot to be complaining), the enemy team has 5 spots for undesirables. You can also say that the enemy team has 5 spots for good teammates, but then again, so does yours (assuming you're good).

It's sort of like if you played a game where if you and a friend played a game where you rolled 5 dice and summed the faces and whoever had the higher score won, but you got to automatically make one dice a 5 before rolling. 5 is better than the average value, so you should win more of the games. Your friend will still beat you on occasion, but you should win more than 50% of the games.

I don't have the numbers to do a complete analysis on ranked, but assuming your better than your elo, you should rise.

Lugg1 votes

Statistically, it should balance out, but in real life it doesn't. When the other team has a feeder/afk, I probably have over a 90% win rate. The only times I lose in those situations is if our team has an afk/feeder/ or diamond smurf as well. While I have bad games just like anyone, the majority of my games are quite solid. I thought it just might be me, but I have friends I play with that are plat/diamond and they say my game is quite good. They have smurfed in low elo and agree that the system is broken since you could end up facing any combination of feeders, trolls, or smurfs that completely throw off a realistic assessment of an individuals skill.

Yes, you can eventually rise out of it, it just shouldn't take two years.

I have made it from Bronze 3/4 to Gold 5 in 101 games this season. 3 games a day, that's a month of ranked. And while every now and then you get a team that is uncarriable, the enemy team should be uncarriable more of the time.

TLDR: Play more if you really believe your better than where you're at and want to climb.

Lugg1 votes

Congrats! How many games do you think you have played total?

Daedalus8711 votes

This season?

Well now it's 102, soon it'll be 103.

Lugg1 votes

I meant total in your LoL career. Is that your total games or just the ranked ones?

Daedalus8711 votes

Ranked this season.

Z Statistic1 votes

It doesn't. If it takes forever and your games are reasonably independent, then struggling to climb in the long run means you're not improving and that if you climb, it's by some stroke of luck. In fact, the system is set up to minimize Type II error by virtue of its matchmaking (minimizing the amount of people who are placed in a lower rank than they deserve.)

So logically if you are fighting to maintain or climb, then you are where you should be.

So yeah, not to use an overused saying but git gud bro

Statistically speaking, the enemy team is more likely to have such a player on their team than you are. Assuming you are not the feeder/afk, that means there is only 4 other people on your team at worst that will be a problem. The enemy team has 5 such potential cases.

So basically in bronze in comes down to "What team has the less feeders and trollers and ragers".

I said only in bronze, later in the game, it comes down to skill, but thats mostly in gold and above.

Daedalus8711 votes

Individual games are luck based. Over the course of the season, your rank becomes skill based.

See my above post.

There's nothing wrong with this ranked system. If you can't carry yourself out of bronze and resort to the "Rager" "Troll" "GG AFKer" excuse, then you need to practice. Otherwise, sorry to say this but, you belong in the elo you're in.

Yeah you get the occasional games that are not able to be carried, but in ELO that low leading all the way up to even challenger, individual skill sets in and can take you to the rating you belong in. From personal experience, I went from being 900 elo (low bronze basically) to gold in a week. Yeah, I was like you guys who blamed everyone but myself, i blamed the ragers, the trolls and the afkers. In the long run as i slowly climbed, i realized that its not their fault, it's my own fault for not being able to carry games. As i got better it got 100% easier to carry.

S3 > Diamond S4 > Diamond S5 (now)> Diamond

You have to get out of that mindset of blaming your teammates and learn that its not all their fault, but partially yours for not being able to carry yourself out of this "elo hell"

As for the LP gain/loss, thats how the MMR system goes buddy. It's almost like that in every game, for example world of warcraft. If a 2.9k rated team wins a game, they're gonna gain +0-10 rating. If they lose they lose 25-30.

Nothing has to change, its fine the way it is.

TL;DR - You're in the elo you're in now, not because of trolls and ragers, but because you cant carry yourself out. Its not the systems fault, its your own.

Some games are impossible to carry in Bronze. Like a week ago I went 24/3/10 as Brand. I hadn't died the first 20 minutes was about 15/0/6 then my team decides to fight around dragon I have a 12 kill tryn, a 8/0/21 and a 9 kill yi all dive on me. I die and even though I ulted my team got aced. The other team then takes an inhib and the game was over in 10 minutes. Some games are impossible to be carried and the MMR system does suck. I have to win 3 games to get as much lp in lose if I lose one game. I've been out of Bronze 5 ten times this season but its impossible for me to carry that hard to the point I never lose.

GroundRuleDouble1 votes

Just keep winning and your MMR will go up. That'll help the discrepency between LP gain and loss. Of course you can't win them all. However, you need to focus on what you can do to help carry your team.

I main support Thresh now, and i have around a 60% win rate as Thresh and a little more since I've started maining Support (I am 3-0 as ADC in that run, too). It's very possible to carry as support. Just look for what you can do for your team and help them snowball.

TL:DR

I suspect your post goes something like this.

I gain less LP than I lose what is this MMR BS? Give me loss forgiven for leavers. I can't carry teams that feed. I called a role but the first pick took it from me.

Just play some normals and find some champs you like for each role. Help your team make good calls. Above all don't rage. I started the season -10 W/L now I'm +20 and I would say this is mostly due to my attitude and decision making than raw mechanical skill.

Archenz4 votes

Wow xD.

That's so wrong, I've never understood why people couldn't just read the post, I mean is it really that difficult.

Anyway, no your TL:DR is incorrect. I didn't complain about feeders, I know how the MMR works, it just could work better, and I didn't mention anything about a team feeding. Please, reading isnt that hard.

MićaĆomlaDJ1 votes

The "Noobs" "Trollers" "Feeders", these are all decided for you before you even join the game.

"Feeders""Noobs"

How is that not complaning. And if you know how MMR works then why are you complain about how you get less LP then you loose? You have shity MMR and it's pretty much it. People having below avrag MMR for bronze isn't the because the game hates you

Archenz3 votes

Im not complaining about my MMR, im simply stating that the way its made is very difficult to climb out.

And im saying a lot of the game is decided before it even begins. Please read.

And everyone else is trying to say that it is not. Games are not decided in Champ Select unless your team makes it that way.

I think about Ranked this way and it has helped me tremendously:

40% of your games are going to be lost due to DC/AFK/Feeder/Troll/etc on your team.

40% of your games are going to be won due to a DC/AFK/Feeder/Troll/etc on the enemy team.

Only about 20% of the games you play in Ranked will you be able to have any meaningful impact in. It is those games that you have to identify and make sure your contribution is positive and leads your team to a win.

That's a pretty good way to look at it.

As far as the MMR, it works and it's fine. I played very poorly when i started playing ranked and lost a lot of games with 0 LP in Bronze V. My MMR tanked--much lower than the Bronze V average. That made it tough to climb out. However, even though i wasn't gaining much LP, as I won more games, my MMR got better and i noticed it by gaining more LP as I won.

Within a week after changing my playstyle, I climbed from 0 LP in Bronze V to around 50 LP in Bronze IV. After I got to Bronze IV, I noticed I was getting even less LP per win and losing more per loss (because MMR thought i should be back in bronze V). However, after more wins, my MMR is starting to level out and it's feeling much better.

Basically, the MMR thing is there so you don't get on a lucky streak and get put in a division you don't belong. However, what people don't realize is that MMR also helps you if you get on an unlucky streak, you don't drop nearly as fast.

ThatH1N11 votes

At the beginning of the day I go to OP.GG and check my mmr. Everyday (sometimes several times a day) your divisions average MMR will fluctuate. OP.GG will tell you where you stand (mmr wise) in your division. If your MMR is lower than the division average then your gains for a win will be less than what you lose for a loss. If your are on par with your divisions MMR than you will gain about the same that you lose for a game. If you are higher than your divisions MMR you will gain far more than what you lose. So it helps to check it often to see where you stand.

Dude,

Right now you are in Bronze 2 with 71 LP. You have won only 7 of your last 20 ranked games and are 130-134 so far in Season 5. There is a good reason you are struggling to climb.

When I check out your champion list you have used 42! different champions in ranked play this season. You need to main one if you want to climb. Find something you are good at and keep playing it. Don't spread your practice time that thin.

The game you are playing as I type this is a great example. Your team

Trundle - 2 games played on the champ [ranked this season] (131 ranked wins this season) Katarina - 0 games played on the champ (96 ranked wins this season) Amumu - 6 games played on the champ (23 ranked wins this season) Vayne - 1 game played on the champ (40 ranked wins this season) Karma - 1 game played on the champ (101 ranked wins this season)

In ranked your team has 10 games worth of experience. That's almost none. It even shows in the "main" designation that LOLskill gives. None of your team is in their usual lane with the exception of those labeled "All Arounder"

The other team has 3 people playing what appear to be mains or at least submains.

Yasuo - 58 games played on the champ this season (235 ranked wins.) Morde - 82 games played on the champ (156 ranked wins.) He mains top and is playing there. Morgana - 25 games played on the champ (61 ranked wins.) Support main.

The matchmaking appears to have been unkind, but its also a case of people playing what they know. The other team has 3 people playing champs where they have more ranked games on that champ than your whole team has on their champs this season. Experience on a champ matters.

Don't just reflexively blame the matchmaking. You should find a few champs ot spam and I expect you'll climb once you do.

Archenz1 votes

TBH, i rekt that mord so hard in the top lane xD.

You know that little thing that comes out in team builder? "Your playing a new champ, matchmaking will be adjusted"

Is it so hard to give that to rank? Either way, im quite experienced with trundle from pre season, also helps hes quite simple.

the adjustment would be a horrible idea to add to ranked. Ranked is in theory players playing at their best, so there should never be any adjustments for people playing a new champ or an unfamiliar lane/style.

Its nice to hear you did well and had experience on Trundle from before. It doesn't change the fact that climbing the ranked ladder is much more complex than your initial argument. I still say you should look for a few champs you play well and spam them in ranked. You'll probably find that your win rate goes up and you start climbing.

Z Statistic1 votes

And yet he won. It is quite possible to be destroyed in lane and still come out ahead enough to win. Mostly it's the fact Trundle's only job is to sap the tank in a teamfight while Morde's job is to sap the entire team.
