Is Zed that mechanically complax? (Not hate, just wondering)

ModAcademy Kayn··15 votes·2,529 views

I had a Zed saying Malhazar required no skill since I only needed to use R and that was all I needed to win (says the Zed main) and saying how Zed is the most mechanically difficult champ in the game.

Is he really that mechanically difficult?

There's a difference between mechanical complexity (how to use skills) and overall complexity (a lot more of when and why to use skills) of a champion. Zed and Malzahar are actually pretty similar in the way that they both need to be very conscious of how much damage their abilities deal, and how their opponent is positioning, because both of them are largely about punishing their opponents' mistakes.

The flaw in that particular Zed's logic, however, lies in his failure to understand that Malzahar's Ult is one of the few remaining abilities in the game where using it can actually completely fuck you over, and as such, is never used without reasonable forethought by anyone who plays the champion. Compare this to Zed's Ult, where he can just shadow out if he used it at the wrong time. Malzahar is mechanically far simpler than Zed, but due to his inherent risk factor, I'd say Malz is about equally difficult to play (and it only gets harder the higher you climb in rank).

You Q so they can't flash out of the rest of the combo, you W and E for the DoT, and then you Ult. Sounds wayyy easier than it really is.

Only when it comes to his skill cap. His skill floor is actually decently low

ModAcademy Kayn1 votes

Skill floor, I haven't heard that term before. Mind clarifying?

How easy it is to pick up a champion and play at a competitive level. Garen is one of the lowest skill floor champions thanks to a binary playstyle with not many options other than "Run at target Q, Spin, Ult. Acquire Elo"

Oh alright. I gotchu.

It's usually applied to champions like Riven and Master Yi, low skill floor/high skill cap. They're easy to pick up and use, but there are some tricks you can use as a skilled player that make them really good (Yi solo dragon at level 1-2, Riven auto attack cancel)

Zed's skill floor is low and skill ceiling is extremely high, so he has complex mechanics that are easy to use. Make sense?

ModAcademy Kayn2 votes

So, he's easy to learn with hard mechanics? Is that what you're getting at?

A Drowned Fish3 votes

It's easy to learn the basics of his kit and do well. But to make Faker or Bjergsen plays is insanely difficult. But what do I know I'm only silver.

ShouldaCalledMIA3 votes

In my opinion, after I watched a bit of bjergson and faker, I really don't think he is that hard. I mean all you really do is like ult, bork them, them mash your keyboard until you see the floating shuriken above their head to know your mark will kill them, go back to your shadow and walk away like a boss. But to be a really good Zed, you need a lot of practice and a lot of mechanics, if you're a Zed god, you can probably climb to diamond. But mechanically, I don't think it is that confusing/complex.

A Drowned Fish3 votes

Perhaps playing the champion would allow you to pass better judgement. That may have been one of the most hard to read thing I've ever seen in my life. To answer the question though, Zed is a relatively easy champion to learn and play, but to play him well and to his absolute full potential, he is probably the hardest to play champion in that right. Low skill floor, very high skill cap.

All you have to do is be bjergsen or faker!

You can do crazy outplays that only someone very skilled at Zed will be able to do, but he isn't hard at all. People on Boards do make him sound like a crazy freelo champion that should never have came out, when they were fine with him a few months ago.

Zed is mechanically difficult to MASTER. However, in the lower elo ranks it doesn't take much to win as a Zed. This is for a few reasons: people don't know what to do against a Zed (harass while his w is on cooldown or poke when he goes to last hit a minion), people get the mindset of "Zed2OP" that they get too scared to do anything against him or don't think clearly when they do try something, and lastly, they don't realize that if you save your cc for when zed would want to go to a shadow, he won't be able to take it. Also, standing in between zed and his shadow, or if he ults you, dont run away from his initial position if you feel you will still die, this will make it easier for your jungler, top, or bot to stay on him without worrying about him using ult to escape.

The reason people such as Faker and Bjergsen are so good on Zed is because they realize the mindsets others have around a zed and take advantage of it. The realize the natural instinct is to run the **** away when he ults rather than move towards the initial position if allies are near. Also, they will incorporate things such as flash, shadows, and the movement speed boost from Yommu's and Blade of the Ruined King in order to dodge all skillshots thrown at him. Watch closely, their reaction times are on point, they will last second flash a skill while placing themself near the target to do damage, and rather than attacking while BoTRK active is in use, they use that short duration of burst to move from attacks. Things like this is what allow those two to all-in and pull out barely alive.

When you talk about mechanically challenging champions you have to include Yasuo, Shaco, Lee Sin, and Azir in the list. However, the reason why Zed is named as such a high mechanically challenging champion is since he has lots of outplay potential, juking enemies with his shadow. However, if that Zed player doesn't utilize the shadow mechanic that much, Zed would be one of the least challenging champions in the game to play.

I wouldnt say Shaco is mechanically challenging, more so strategically challenging.

don´t underestimate his ultimate and the passive...the difference between a Shaco that uses the skills to their full potential and an okish shaco is bigger than on most other champions.

GoAltF42 votes

the reason many low elo say zed takes no skills is due to the fact that they cant even outplay the zed.

zed ults you, they just die. look at higher elo montage of pros outplaying zed's when they ult.

Sirsir2 votes

Not so much. Everything you do is so fast, keep your cursor on your target and press everything.

Don't get me wrong he can make some sick jukes, but to play him properly is nothing.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooo. He is mechanically easy but can pull off some ridiculous stuff if you are very good with him. I think the closest champion to him this way is probably LeBlanc. If your good the enemy will never touch you, but anyone can pick her up and start getting kills.

The way I would put it is Zed is mechanically intense, but not mechanically difficult.

SmknWdl1 votes

To play well, yes he is probably one of the hardest if not the hardest to play at his higher levels.

TwoD1 votes

Lol Zed is easy to play and as easy to beat.

I am (was) silver last season. I can count the number of times I lost lane on a single hand, and most of those are when I started. All my "outplays" are either learned by-the-book (ty redmercy) or just looked like outplays when I was mashing my buttons.

Zed can be played very skillfully but he's not the most difficult champ to pick up.

wop1 votes

I would say Zed is mechanically hard, meaning he takes some skill to use abilities correctly and efficiently, but overall he is somewhat simple, in terms of what to do, what to build and things like that. All you have to do is build AD on him, and attack people, and try to stay alive. A more difficult champ would be Azir, who uses an ability similar to Zed's shadow, but has more difficult choices like where to put them when to move them, what items to build (Azir is mage/adc)

Scrimshäw1 votes

he literally is faceroll, it's impossible to miss Q at close range

Earl Eulrich1 votes

1v1 with the common botrk+ghostblade it´s really just rightclicking.

In teamfights though it´s entirely different, thus his fairly low winrate despite the ridiculously broken laningphase/1v1 in almost any elo beneath the pro-scene.

Meep Man1 votes

Zed isn't as complex as believed, but he is pretty complex. I would rank Azir and a few others higher.

Mooing Kev1 votes

Basically his design is simple, ult a target do as much damage during your ult duration and get back to safety. However, not every scenario is simple as press R and do damage. There are many factors that get in your way of deign this simple process whether it be through items, skills, ganks etc. He has many play making potential through playing mind games and swapping at right times. A skill zed who keeps track of his shadow and doesn't miss his q can be quite daunting to play against and can probably kill some champs late game without even getting touched.

Sypher The Poro1 votes

Yes and no. His kit allows for a lot of outplay, but it isn't that hard to learn. His ult shows when it's a killing blow, allowing you to know exactly when to escape, shadows allow for easy escapes (His ult shadow has infinite range, which is really stupid). His W passive is an AD Deathcap, and his passive works on minions making under-tower farm rather easy.

This is my list, from hardest to easiest, of the top 5 most mechanically difficult champions to play:

  1. Gnar: He has two forms, and you can not control when to change. He is also the squishiest champion (in mini form) in the game.
  2. Yasuo: People say he's a super easy noob champ. No. His ult requires a knockup, and if your team isn't built to help you, it's a slow skill-shot you need to charge in order to use. Also rather squishy with a full damage build, his MR does not scale with level, leaving him weak to mages.
  3. Azir: Position position position. A smart Azir can destroy entire teams, but a dumb one is just a squishy mage throwing sand around.
  4. Khazix: He used to be "Press Q for Elo", now you need to be smart and isolate your targets. Otherwise, you're a really squishy bug without damage.
  5. Vayne: The stuff a good Vayne can pull it is stupid. Her ult and Q make her dueling potential stupidly high, but trying to use her without practice will cause you to tumble into a loss.
