Lets discuss oddball builds that actually work

Barkley··7 votes·2,649 views

I'm not talking about HIGHLY situational builds, either. I'm not talking about cheese builds. I'm not talking about builds that work in 1/10 games.

I'm talking about builds that are uncommon, but work quite well, and are actually solo queue viable.

I've personally found some success with kleptomancy vayne, her tumble allows her to proc the rune with some degree of success and frequency. Its not optimal, but it does work, and I do typically end the game with 1500-2000 more gold on average than I do in my PTA or FF games with vayne. My damage is noticeably lower, though - about 1.2-1.8k lower. But it feels good to hit that 2-item power spike earlier. (About 45 seconds to 1:30 earlier on average over about 9 games)

I've also found moderate success with comet AP malphite mid lane against melee matchups like zed, yasuo, akali, diana, etc. item 3027 item 3285 item 3157 item 3001 item 3020 item 3135 You run ultimate hat, transcendence, and cosmic insight. Poke with your Q/E, and by the end of the game your ultimate is on about a 55-60 second cooldown. (every game I've played has ended before I can get rank 3 in it, so I'm not sure what the final cooldown ends up being) You can basically one-shot the enemy adc or apc, then zhonyas while your team mops up. The ROA gives him some survivability, and the zhonyas + abyssal just adds to that. Even with that survivability, his damage is insane. You can even grab a item 3100 if you're really stomping the lane and don't need the void staff pen, or sac one of the tank items for it if you don't need one source of mitigation or the other.

And lastly, my favorite - and this is one that's pretty well-known, but underplayed in my opinion....

Morgana jungle. Her ganks just feel so damn good, and she's impactful at all stages of the game. The only downfall is that she's EXTREMELY susceptible to counter jungling, but in the current "gank often, gank always" meta, that matters much less than you'd think, because Morgana's uptime is insane. You can do 2 full clears with ganks in between before you ever have to back for resources and items, and by then you've likely gotten 2-3 kills and perhaps some assists. So whatever deficit you'd be at by getting counterjungled is offset by the fact that you can stay out on the map basically until you get bored.

Do you have any off-kilter builds that are actually viable and usable?

Malphite has looong been a niche pick to counter those melee AD assassins, as well as old Galio was, as long as you didn't allow them to freely poke you

If I have to reveal a secret build, it is likely item 1402 Hecarim
Hecarim has trouble in the current jungle because he doesn't particularly benefit from any common enchantment in jungle Bloodrazor isn't good because it doesn't help much on damage going forward in the game, as Hecarim main way to deal damage is run in and Q+ Sheen enhanced AA (Trinity Force) to the selected target, and hopefully nail the engage so that you can keep the enemy in range for further Q+ Sheen enhanced AA combo weaving in and out of the fight to avoid being in a bad spot and being quickly taken down, while Bloodrazor require you to keep autoattacking to keep dealing damage Cinderhulk has pretty much the same problem, you don't want to be in enough time in a fight to make its contribution valuable. It is somewhat better than Bloodrazor as it helps you dealing damage when you go in even if you are just slightly out of range for the AA follow-up and help you slighlty when clearing minion waves/multi monster camps, BUT if you value that passive enough, you would rather get it attached to the defensive stats you need on Sunfire Cape as completed item rather than on the jungle item

Warrior is the most decent on paper, but is far from optimal too. I mean, AD is nice and all, but Heca doesn't benefit from that measly amount of CDR% that the item gives ALONE. The Q is yet on a short enough CD, especially with his Q peculiar mechanic, that isn't likely affected like at all by it, and W/E CD are too high on early levels to make that CDR impactful on a jungle path/fight, as even with those 2 seconds saved, it doesn't allow you to reuse multiple times those abilities in a short fight/skirmish (and also Heca has to manage his mana early on). Warrior CDR% stat becomes good when added to Trinity Force 20% CDR to actually impact W/E (+ R)...but that lies the problem, TF is a super expensive item and is core on him, so you are in a situation where you have to buy two EXPENSIVE items to get the most out of the jungle one, and you are forced to choose which to rush, which leave you for a lot of time with either a signle jungle item with no optimal synergy with the champion kit, or with various pieces of different items in the inventory without benefitting from the effects of those completed items (likely tier 2 jungle item->sheen + boots->complete one of the two items between enchanted jungle item and Trinity Force-> complete the other item)

For how absurd as it seems, and probably currently is, Runic Echoes has a lot of interesting things to offer to Hecarim. It gives AP which increase the amount of healing he receive from his W from jungle camps which turn into an healthier jungle pathing, it give Movement Speed which turns into some AD because of Hecarim passive (around 20-25 AD more or less early on with/without boots), it gives the same Luden's Echo passive that help later on in the game if you want to go for splitpushing (at which Hecarim is fairly good because he can escape pretty quickly as soon as he see an enemy), it has a fairly cheap and very stat efficient item in its build ( item 3113 is 250 gold LESS than Warrior's item 3133, which is almost the base boots gold) on which you can sit upon if you want to rush Trinity Force first Runic Echos only BIG disadvantage is that the clearing speed is reduced BY A LOT because of the lack of AA damage from Warrior/Bloodrazor or Bami's Cinder aura damage from Cinderhulk, but if you can make up from it by exploiting the fact that because of the enhanced W Heca comes out from the jungle healther on average without the need to back when expected from him (if you have good mana management/good healing plants usage), to apply lane pressure/overall vision, then you have found the item that has the healthier and cheaper build path while retaining pretty good synergy with Trinity Force (because of Trinity Force Movement Speed bring the movement speed around the soft cap) and being useful later on in the game

Contrary to popular belief, Hecarim doesn't benefit from AD nearly as much as people assume. So I can entirely see bloodrazor being better as in a full combo you can proc it 2-3 times. Hecarim feels amazing with good attack speed, it's unfortunate that many people don't realize it.

Try getting a ravenous hydra or a titanic hydra on him as well. People severely underestimate how much sustain it will give him from his W. A statikk shiv also falls under this category of items underestimated on him for the same reason.

Gunblade, though expensive, is also fairly awesome on him, and is probably tied with ravenous hydra as a great sustain item on him.

Not to mention if you're running ingenious hunter this build works great on him with a 24 second gunblade and a 6 second ravenous hydra active.

Boots, gunblade, hydra, triforce, statikk shiv, infinity edge feels amazing on Hecarim. It's worth trying out despite how squishy it looks. (You can heal to almost full with one good auto it's absolutely disgusting).

That's correct, but his Q still scale off purely on AD and that is currently its main damage tool (and E scales on AD too on the start of the combo on a gank for example) He can use AS only when he can stick to people after getting in without being CCed/bursted down, and honestly if he is able to do it, probably it does not matter what build he is running on as he is probably going to be successful anyway, so I don't see why you should pick Bloodrazor as enchantment, like at all (in any situation in which can be good, everyting else can be as good if not better, and in general situation Bloodrazor is pretty bad)

The problem is the item cost. Hydra items and Gunblade cost a ton, and if you want to build them you are gonna get behind your opponent in itemization, so unless you suggest to drop Trinity Force entirely, I don't think is viable honestly - and Trinity is overall better as first expensive item built on Heca -

Not to mention if you're running ingenious hunter this build works great on him with a 24 second gunblade and a 6 second ravenous hydra active.

Ingenious Hunter is literaly the worst rune in that row for Hecarim, you can't even pick it ahead of the not best rune in the row Ravenous Hunter (healing is reduced to 1/3 on spell with area effect, but come on, your Q is so spammable you would still heal a lot), nevermind choosing it ahead of the literally best possible rune for Heca as Relentless Hunter with his MS bonus (and thinking about starting on any other rune tree other than Domination with Predator keystone rune is just nonsense)

Boots, gunblade, hydra, triforce, statikk shiv, infinity edge feels amazing on Hecarim. It's worth trying out despite how squishy it looks. (You can heal to almost full with one good auto it's absolutely disgusting).

Tbh, if you are suggesting full damage (thorugh crit) Heca, at least one (if not two) of Gunblade/Hydra/Trinity Force is overkill on damage/healing while leaving you extremely squishy. You could pretty much drop Hydra for Spirit Visage and Trinity Force for Iceborn Gauntlet and you'd still retain the immediate burst + healing while being far more tankier or drop only Hydra for Bloodthirster and get the shield to survive incoming damage from the excessive healing you receive from your damage dealt. Or you could even go full yolo, drop Trinity Force, Hydra and boots and run Phantom Dancer, Death's Dance and ZZ'Rot Portal as you'd go basically full crit/heal

It is imho not worth the risk anyway, even though it is pretty powerful and you are confident you and especially your team can always outplay and outsmart enemies

Pierce The Veal1 votes

Yeah the build used to work better when games went to lategame more often. Plus, imo gunblade is great but really iffy for the cost.

The thing with bloodthirster is the shield just isn't worth it. Other that that it's a lump of stats, whereas ravenous hydra gives you AOE damage, aoe lifesteal, and an extra active. But that's not all, the secret of ravenous hydra on hecarim is that his W actually heals for 100% instea dof being reduced. So in teamfights the ravenous hydra's aoe damage hitting 5 opponents will mean you are healing off of that 5 times. It's as if you hit 5 autos with your W active. With the hydra passive it falls to 1+0.6x4=3.4. You are not healing for an insignificant amount at all.

I can see what you're talking about when it comes to ingenious hunter vs relentless hunter, and all I can say is just a few weeks back is people were going crazy about ingenious hunter, so I was saying that if you like running that rune, it's even better on this build. Otherwise I myself am not a fan of the ingenious hunter predator combo.

And you're right, the build I have up is too damn expensive. Especially considering triforce, ie, ravenous hydra, and gunblade all exceed 3k gold.

What I like to go for instead is a triforce+tiamat, statik shiv build, and then top it off with sterak's/spirit visage/deadman's plate depending on what's needed.

The problem is always the same in my opinion with tiamat, I don't think it is worthy to go glass cannon and hoping in that ravenous hydra healing, as Heca yet starts to become pretty useless in late game if he hasn't gotten fed, nevermind if he is not ahead (and in adiition to that, the better your enemy are, the less viable is to hit multiple targets on your Hydra active combo as they are better in positioning and spreading out). He would just not being able to survive enough to do his job if he goes glass cannon, the best you can try with that set up is switch out Statik which has no crit sinergy in that kit for a mixed item like for example Maw of Malmortius (Lifeline shield) or Mercurial Scimitar (Qss + brief movement speed aka damage burst) and then the last defensive item depending on what you need Especially starting from the assumption of a bit slower clear speed if we started all the discussion talking about Runic Echoes pros and cons

Pierce The Veal2 votes

Hecarim just becomes pretty useless past 25 minutes regardless of what he builds.

The biggest reasoning for the statikk shiv being good at all is it gives him crit, movespeed, aoe healing, a huge burst of damage, and attack speed. It's overall just a very decent item on him, plus it's MUCH cheaper than the alternatives.

And truth is, he doesn't survive long enough to do his job regardless of what he builds. At least with the assassinish build you can one shot a threat like the adc or mage and then run away only to come back together with your team to fight a 4v5. It is by far not a bad way to play hecarim, but at the moment hecarim is just lackluster all around.

Nah, Heca is still pretty good if is not behind till 30-35 minutes, the problem is that it is increasingly difficult to achieve that because the window to get there by being ahead or at least even vs some more favourable comps is actually pretty small (if you get behind/even after level 7-8, you are stuck behind almost forever in the game)

The thing about Statik Shiv, is that you'd likely build the moment where Heca would get his power spike anyway as you would be around the time completing your two item spike anyway, so unless you can fit it somehow earlier in the build (and you really can't), it doesn't really solve any problem and it leave you with parts of items that have questionable stat value and synergy with the other items for the gold you have invested on it rather than having a more coherent itemization that scale somehwat better later on

P.S. I am curious to see now with the changes to AP items that have been done in the latest patches if some of the new AP items could find somewhere to make an even more hybrid itemization (Twin SHadow or Spellbinder), but I have not had the time to try it

Pierce The Veal1 votes

The issue is his two item spike. The statikk shiv triforce maximizes his burst and is cheaper than triforce+ anything else. It gives him free waveclear, more damage, and surprisingly, more sustain in teamfights as he heals off of every shiv bolt as if it were single target during his w.

In the case of AP items, unfortunately it seems none are actually useful for him.

Statikk burst depends form crit luck. You are betting on getting luck when you hit your AAs in your combo, especially when crit has no synergy whatsoever in the rest of the kit. You rely on luck to win fights, and the percentage of success is not high...not an ideal situation

About AP itemas, I thnk to agree, unfortunatley in the jungle you can't stack quickly Spellbinder passive to make it viable, and if you need Twin Shadows for theactive probably things are going south because your team got no vision whatsoever

Pierce The Veal1 votes

The thing about getting an IE+Shiv is you have a 50% chance of success. And not just a 50% chance of success, you have a 50% chance of obliterating the champion you hit with it.

Not to mention, even if it doesn’t crit, statikk shiv has some decent aoe damage for him to heal off of in a teamfight.

Of course, such a build means Hecarim often cannot engage, and so that is a dillemma. However, such oneshot builds did occur in high elos, so I assume it cannot be that bad.

In high elo people reach levels of mastery of a champ that allow them to do pretty much any crazy build idea they can pull off through their mechanical skills Not being able to engage is HUGE on a champ like Hecarim that can literally do only that, and only when he can obliterate his target fast enough that the enemy can't retaliate (or AT LEAST make it worth to trade its life)

Pierce The Veal1 votes

Basically even normal build Hecarim is squishy as hell. The only reason he doesn’t seem to die fast is because of the sustain from his W.

He is not a good primary engage, although he appears to be so. He’s better at catching people out than at engaging, because he needs his team to be around instantly to have a semblence of being tanky.

Normal build Heca is squishy but at least he can still survive to getout of the fight or stay around/keep chasing enemy team as long as he take out/force to retreat or flash away the most dangerous DPS dealers out of the fight If your Heca gets stopped in the track, it is donezo

Heca is a flanker, so he is not a reliable primary engage, but he can act as one as long as ther situation is favourable Squishy Heca is just bad at this and can only catch out people because he would instatntly exploe if he even try to engage

Pierce The Veal1 votes

I’d say both Hecarim builds do the same thing, but squishy Hecarim can sort of assassinate and tanky hecatim can sort of tank.

My favorite (Although now I get people who AFK right away) is Aurelion Sol support with an Ancient Coin.

The mana sustain from the coin keeps you up without having to use any unless you want to fight, and fighting guarantees that you'll be doing constant damage because you have two opponents you can hit with your stars, which also makes him effectively twice as efficient in terms of trading so long as your adc chips in too.

Even without your adc, you can usually lvl 2 cheese heavy damage and either force summoner spells or your opponents to base. Sometimes both.

Still take exhaust like a good space doggie and keep your ult to peel for both of you, sticking close to effectively keep the event from wanting to go in on your carry. (Guard Space-Doggie)

I'll grab aitem 3165 so my assists refill mana, and depending on if they're mobile or not, I'll take either Electrocute or Comet, but almost always a combination of those two trees. (Ultimate Hat is great for the extra up time on a defensive ult)

item 3116 is typical, but it's good here for extra peel, unless you want more Mana, then go for item 3030 .

Taric This is super fun at lvl 2 you can out duel everyone but ornn (i hate him) your build order is item 3025 item 3751 you usually want this over everything this and sheen usually (if against heavy ap) item 3065 (complete visage first then sunfire 3rd into item 3068 item 3047 item 3111 into this is situational (for team purposes) or if you lose lane it happens item 3190 you can run this to help your team out if they need the umph item 3143 item 3075 item 3194 item 3800 these are your lovely 6 last items pick one for situation it's all up to you

If you can consistently win most of your normals then chances are it´ll work in ranked too as long as you don't counterpick yourself into a corner.

Isn't really any difference between ranked and draft picking at the moment anyhow, only thing that is different is what happens when the game ends.

Tank aatrox, it is a build specifically against heavy poke laners. level order: e, w, q, e, e, r, e, w, e, w, r, w, w, q, q, r, q, q You start and max e for huge poke. Your base w is used for healing. You use grasp and demolish to be able to push. His base damage and healing make you incredibly hard to get out of lane and removes the advantages of any poke champ ability to get you out of lane that way.

Your build: item 3748 into item 3022 , into the following items: item 3143 item 3075 item 3065 and as boots item 3047, item 3111 and item 3009 when ahead

tryn smite/flash with spell book and sorcery with all the cdr. rushing protobelt and green runic echo. most people are like, ap tryn, such fucking troll. but its not. great wave clear with those two items, huge heals still that you always survive ignite with.ill start spell thief and 3 pots, rush river and hopefully proc it for some free gold, rush proto then green runic, then ill get triforce, phantom, ie, rageblade and no boots. if you played smart, didn't fail r, you shouldnt lose many lane matchups at all. ive beaten jax top countless times with this, darius, teemo, malf, galio, kled, olaf, trundle, urgot, wu, and yes... even yas. the lane matchups that are very hard still are riven, quinn, cho, camille, gp, mundo, and a good fiora.

i've tried so many strange builds, but my favorite is Ahri battle fox

build: item 3020 (or item 3158 if you get item 3151) - item 3100 - item 3152 (or item 3151 if you know you can't win your early with proto) - item 3001 (item 3157 if against a full AD team or zed) - item 3135 - item 3089

runes : domination > dark harvest (yes,i'm not joking) - sudden impact - eyeball collection - ravenous hunter // ingenious hunter if you go for zhonya sorcery > nullifying orb - trascendence // inspiration > perfect timing - cosmic insight if you got for zhonya

if you get feed ,you almost feel like she have some damage, while still having an insane mobility and while being tanky

the combo DH + abyssal is hidden broken, you are adding a % amplifier on a rune that deals an insanely high base damage (almost no scalings, mostly it's flat base damage from its stacks),you can kill someone, then using your ult dashes and mid/low CD abilities for killing the others

in lane you can use ahri's Q for poking, then getting near your enemy with your bonus movement speed and AA with DH getting almost half HP bar after lvl 4/5 (this build really makes melee/low range cry)

i think it would work with Leblanc as well (never tried)

edit : an honorable mention for trollcrank with smite and spellbook for lvl 1 blue/red steal

I have pretty good success with Teemo supp. It is all about maxing Q and getting in early trades. So it's either sorc/dom or sorc/insp. I always go celerity and max W second because as long as you don't get hit it's free damage. I don't go dom so much any more, bc I mostly took it for zombie ward bc I'd put off sighstone for more dmg, and post-6 you just can't be ganked. It's great.

I guess basically troll build, funnily enough we win most of them, double initiate cc tanks bot, so like taric, leona, maokai, kench, your first 3 or 4 levels suck with trades, but then suddenly you are just rolling them, even faster if your jungle ganks... also Melee bruiser maokai was hilarious

Manadin: muramana+some combination of iceborne gauntlet, frozen heart, abyssal mask, and other tank items. You can opt out of boots if you wish. You'll have like 3000 mana with ultimate hat your ult is on a 0.8 second cd or so. It's pretty cool.

AD Kassadin: not as good now as before, but plays like manadin but with more ad and less tankyness: Muramana, ravenous hydra, triforce, frozen heart, final two items can either by tank items or IE+statikk shiv. All will work well. Hydra gives great waveclear to Kassadin who otherwise can't split push as well as you might like.

Just remember for Kassadin you MUST take presence of mind. Ultimate hat is great too but technically can be replaced, but it's arguably the best mastery for him second to presence of mind.

I've tried unsealed spell book Nunu and it seems to work. Take summoner 11 summoner 12 as the starting summoners. Start the jungle item and go to the opposite buff the enemy starts. AD/on hit Lulu. You're a self peeling ADC. It was one of the weirdest things I've tried in league.

Magic pen Mundo (RIP old rune system). I used to have a page with nothing but magic pen runes. His Q absolutely chunked people.

Close Air Support Gangplank (AKA AP). All you do is R. It was fun in ARAM but probably wouldn't work on the Rift.

"I have passive so you die" Poppy. All you need is Trinity Force, Shiv, Rapid Firecannon, Duskblade, Ghostblade and Boots of your choice. Activate W and auto someone.

AD Blitz. You oneshot people with your E. Must be even more fun with Dark Harvest.

shicky971 votes

AP Gunblade Shyvana Toplane.

You max E first and poke with it as much as possible. The fun part of this build is rushing for Bilgewater Cutlass, which most of the time makes your opponent opt into item 3047 or another armor item, then you pull a 180 and turn it into a gunblade, leaving them with awkward itemization. My full build usually looks something like this:item 3146 item 3020 item 3116 item 3151 item 3135 item 3089

Your All-ins are quite strong because of the high base damage on your dragon-form E as well as the substantial AP ratios on your E and ultimate.

Your gameplan during the teamfight phase is to catch as many people as possible in your ult and hit them all with your E fireball, dealing massive damage to multiple targets. There have been times where I've caught 3 squishies with my ult and gotten an instant triple kill with my empowered E.

As for runes, I've found the most optimal ones are either Electrocute or Comet.

It's "oddball" because people are overhyped over classical support builds, but these give supports their own "survival kits" and at least they get to live a second longer (or longer than that if we're talking about before preseason 8). It works, you're not really "trolling" for building like that, but it's not the best.

I like Glacial Augment Graves. You can actually gank early now!

This isn't exactly a troll build, it's just an off meta build, but it's my preferred Kennen build.

item 3146 item 3151 item 3285 item 3089 item 3135 item 3158

It's really the runes that make it "troll."

Kleptomancy/Perfect Timing/Future's Market/Cosmic Insight/The Ultimate Hat/Celerity

Klepto is actually good on Kennen (in lane) since weaving in auto attacks between your abilities is such a vital part of Kennen's kit. And it's even better because you don't have to spend mana to get Klepto off, you can just use Q and auto the enemy laner, who, more often than not, is melee, since that's the way that top lane is.

Leona Top: item 3068 item 3025 item 3748 item 3022 item 3001 item 1001 and your choice of boots

Grasp recommended but you can use klepto/glacial augment(can switch out sunfire for randuins)

Sticky for your jg to gank easily and catch out targets, provides lots of cc for team, does a fair amount of damage, soaks up damage Abyssal helps for the hp, mr, 10% cd reduction, its passive which heals you often every time you Q, and its aura goes well since leona's skills do ap damage

Bruiser Chogath.

item 3146 item 3078 item 3065 item 3001 item 3151 + boots

40% CDR = 2.5 second cooldown on E, allowing you to essentially permaslow champs.

Plenty of sustain through Grasp + Gunblade + Visage.

Still fairly tanky. Viability really depends on your opponent's teamcomp of course.

Quinn - Frozen Mallet + Statikk Shiv

It's absolute aids, especially if you add some more durability items to the build. It's really just for splitpushing, but she becomes pretty stupid to deal with 1v1 as well. Take Grasp/Demolish for primary and some movement speed/vision for secondary. Build QSS if they have reliable hard CC.

If you play it right, they should always have to send at least two people to come stop you. You can win without really fighting anyone.
