I just don't see the reason I should pick Rakan over other supports.

Sure I have not really got to play him yet, but when I look at his kit and when I see him in my games I kinda get the feeling he's outclassed, save for his survivability and his ultimate.

As a support you mainly want to do two things: save allies and engage/disengage with cc. The first thing is pretty simple with most caster-supports. Your adc in trouble? Slap your shield and heals spell on them for instant effect mostly. For Rakan to do that with his full power he needs to a) hit his Q and b) also come really close to you. Every half second this takes longer than an instant effect increases the risk of your teammates dying. So obviously people gonna prefer the more reliable option.

The other aspect is cc. And even here supports like Nami or Janna have some serious power. Especially Nami who also has massive AoE potential in her ult (if it doesnt get instantly deleted by ONE FREAKING WINDWALL PIXEL), but when I compare Rakan's jump to Nami's bubble... the bubble is also delayed, also counts as a knockup, but it doesnt put me as the user in danger.

Combine that with the fact that saving people as Nami is a lot easier, and that she still has her E to work with, and I somehow see no reason to pick Rakan over Nami, who kinda does the same thing he does (healing, cc that favours getting the enemy away from your adc), but more reliable and with higher versatility.

So overall I am not sure why I would want to pick him...

Passive shield, healing, massive aoe knockup on a dash, shielding dash he can use twice, fantastic ult, overall very fun playstyle.

Yeah fun is one thing. Urgot Mid can be fun.

But: Sure as hell not the pick I will make if I want to win my rankeds tho.

He feels more like a caster mage than a support, maybe that's why he's invented so people stop taking annie, brand, malzahar, veigar support and play a champion who feels similar but built with support purpose.

But thats is because he is still new. People need to learn which item surges well with him, as well as an ADC who works best. Give it time and the community will show is true potential!

Rakan is in the Warden Subclass. He is a tank support that is meant to dive in and deal cc. Like Thresh or Braum. His ability to actually protect an ally is weaker than the actually caster supports. Just as Thresh and Braum only offer a shield that scales off of his souls and a shield the stops projectiles from passing, respectively, both are lack luster in "protecting" an ally traditionally. It takes them skill with their shields to protect and requires health to tank a blow for an ally when else their shields can't.
