i hate playing against gangplank

Critmaster Garen··6 votes·2,390 views

the only champion in the game who can be 30 cs behind and still even in gold.

even when youre winning against him, which is hard enough in the first place, considering that he can always just play entirely passive and farm it up from a screen away.

he keeps you hostage in lane with his splitpush while still contributing to fights around the map with his stupid ult.

i wish he had just one single weakness.

if you don't have a low cooldown dash gl trying to all-in him early, he can just play like a bitch and safely outscale

play around barrels

this isnt about his barrels.

its about how ridiculously safe he is in lane (its almost impossible to shut him down), and the strategic pressure he puts on the map at the same time.

i think it is physically impossible for a gangplank to ever lose lane. it feels like the best you can do is have him go slightly behind, and then just farm it back up 5 minutes later by nonstop splitpushing and grabbing assists with his ult.

but since you brought up his barrels. good gangplank players have found ways to prevent you from playing around them aswell.

you can place down and chain barrels mid explosion and make it impossible for your opponent to contest them. at the very least this means he can always 100% reliably waveclear and split push.

Gp is one of the easiest lanes for me... Avoid his barrel yes big tip. But before level 9 he is really squishy. Easy to kill. I have a reason u probably don't know how to lane against him. And GP is a farm champion. Just play a farm champion also. Easy as that... He has many weaknesses.. He is very squishy Pre tri-, Once his orange is gone he is easy to gank and even then really easy to gank, he can get cancelled out on farm if ur abusive in lane. Pls ppl like u are either low elo and don't understand or u just dont know how to lane against him...

i know how to lane against him, and ive beaten him in cs and got ahead in kills of him.

you didnt read.

winning lane is not going to shut him down or put a dent in his effectiveness. thats whats infuriating. hes still going to stay relatively even in gold despite you getting ahead in cs and maybe a kill on him.

its ridiculously easy for him to play passive and force you to stay in lane, while he can still contribute to his team himself.

if might ask, which division are you playing in? because that plays a big role. in bronze, silver or gold, it might be possible to snowball against a gp. but in higher divisions, people know how to play safe. and as far as safety goes, i dont think there is another top laner like gp.

You don't even need to avoid his barrels. You can just farm them with good timing.

But his reworked ultimate is too consistent for a global and the damage it does.

So he places a barrel, what do you do?

  1. Take a 50/50 (not really tho because a GP player should have the timing down better) where you either destroy it and get 10 gold or whatever or you take ~150 - 200+ damage,
  2. Take a barrel combo for the same damage or
  3. get zoned till he decides to explode it which is dumb for a champ that youre supposed to punish early?

I'll just take the 10 gold instead.

And the timing is around the barrel. The only thing that you need to calculate is the travel time of your own attack if you're ranged or the animation if you're melee. So you are also playing with how well you know your champion.

Penns3 votes

Its still a "50/50" like a dragon or baron smite, just that youre punished way harder than you are rewarded if he fails. And you also need to walk up instantly because if its at 1 hp already (and youre melee).. well.

Most melee champions should be killing him though, not contesting his barrels.

Well thats kind of my problem. "way too safe to ever shut down with good sustain, a cleanse on low cooldown and Exhaust."

cooldown and mana cost are high tbh. I specifically remember GP getting nerfed in that department because his sustain from W was too much.

TP and non-TP summoner spells have their respective pros/cons in the top lane. You need to play with what you have. As a side note, the best GP in the world takes TP: https://www.op.gg/summoner/userName=%EB%A7%8C%EA%B8%B0%ED%87%B4%EC%86%8C%EB%A7%88%EC%8B%9C%EC%95%84

I mean since he rushes Sheen they arent that high for what it does. And tp makes it just as hard to shut him down.

He still can't use W often because he requires mana to spam Q for farming/harassing.

Yeah, it's just not really a fair statement to say that GP has exhaust as part of the reason of why he's a safe pick.

Penns2 votes

I just wish he couldnt either bully you in lane while farming gold with Bandit or be way too safe to ever shut down with good sustain, a cleanse on low cooldown and Exhaust.

I just wish they would nerf the Slow on his barrels into ground, so he isnt safe early anymore.

A champion that has such s HUGE lategame scaling (50%HP with one barrel lategame, ignoring 40% armor) shouldnt be able to play that save.

Riven, Kayle, Pantheon, Aatrox, Vlad all give him a really hard time. His main damage comes from his barrels, which are contestable.

they arent contestable when he sits under his turret, places them behind him and then chains them mid explosion.

maybe you can dodge the explosion and he cant deal damage to you. but that wont stop him from getting farmed as fuck.

freezing lane against him is just as impossible because it the same problem. he places a barrel into a bush, chains them onto your wave and forces the wave into the turret and bounce back to him.

even if he loses cs in that process, he stays even in gold.

If he chains them to try to hit you or even farm, it will bounce the wave back. In fact, it'll probably bounce back regardless or whether or not he chains barrels because the wave is close to his tower and will probably crash soon. If not you can always eat a barrel chain or dodge it so you can push the wave in.

maybe you can dodge the explosion and he cant deal damage to you. but that wont stop him from getting farmed as fuck.

Yeah it will. His barrels are on CD and you can chase him down if he doesn't have them to kite with. GP dies easily without defensive barrels versus aggressive top laners like Renekton/Fiora/Riven/Tryndamere.

freezing lane against him is just as impossible because it the same problem. he places a barrel into a bush, chains them onto your wave and forces the wave into the turret and bounce back to him.

Then he has no defensive barrels and your minions are sitting with awkward HPs. He doesn't want to spend more than 1 barrel to push if he can because he needs defensive barrels versus aggresive top laners and barrels in the bush serve well defensively. Also the cooldown on barrel (E) charges is quite long at low levels, and GP doesn't max E - he maxes Q.

even if he loses cs in that process, he stays even in gold.

Depends how much CS. He doesn't farm well without Sheen. Often times he'll not even use Q to farm but rather to just harass (collect bandit gold, proc Grasp). If he goes Grasp against champions that can fight back (which they should because Tobias Feed is not the way to play GP top and you only want to get bandit versus tanks that cannot fight back like Naut/Malph/Shen/Poppy), he will be using Q mostly to trade and pick off a few minions and not so much to farm an entire wave. He doesn't farm entire waves easily until TF.

ok, despite the fact that around 50% of the time you have to expect that your opponent drafts after you and you dont have the luxurity of hard counterpicking him every time with a handful of champions that you might or might not really be used to playing. what happens when you won lane?

what happens is, that he turns into goddamn Tryndamere and pushes waves into you nonstop.

if you only go as far as make the attempt at roaming to other lanes to utilize your advantage, hes gonna sit on top of your turret and fucking wreck the thing in a moments notice.

his barrel wavclear just allows him to run back and forth between lanes and farm it up nonstop and ult into any skirmish that breaks out around the map. hes an incredibly strong split pusher, even when he doesnt win lane.

what frustrates me, is that it feels is that you never really can shut him down. hes always going to be useful in some form, and can still fuck over your team.

He's actually not like Tryndamere. Tryndamere can dive you once fed enough. GP can dive you only if he builds bruiser, in which case he probably won't have the damage to dive you unless he massively outplays you. Tryndamere's also much more mobile than GP is.

Also unless GP is building multiple Doran Blades or rushing Sterak's after TF, he will remain squishy and it's actually pretty easy to dive given that you have a tank.

I mean you should hate any split pushing champ then because you don't seem to be able to see how you could possibly deal with them. And tbh most GPs do not play the splitpush style, they'd rather use their AoE damage in team fights.

i wish he had just one single weakness.

He's squishy, has little/no AP damage, can't play aggressive early/is easily bullied, his barrels have VERY long cooldowns early on, he's forced to either have no ult vs you or have no global presence...

Plenty of things to play around. The reason Gangplank is so safe and passive in lane is because he has to be. He cannot fight early and most other champions will kill him in a straight 1v1 at early levels. Pantheon, Zed, Renekton, these champions are hell for Gangplank because they prevent him from even being close to the minion wave to farm with Q.
