Sona mini-update idea
In a passenger seat for a 4 hour car ride so gonna pass boredom putting up some ideas for mini-reworks for some champs, starting with Sona.
Currently, Sona is one of 2 supports tailored for heavy late game scaling through the power of abilities. Her gameplay theme revolves around using music to enchant the battle-field and there are 3 points which cause Sona to be lacking.
-
Having an enchanter's abilities tied to auras surrounding the champion cause a naturally squishy champion to sit in risky positions or forced to sit back and only affect a select few allies. Often the latter is what occurs.
-
All of her basic abilities work in a similar manner yet differ in their affects. To keep to the music theme it seems abilities were made tailored to fit specific cases that makes skill expression lacking between Sona and her allies.
-
Lowering basic ability cooldowns through ultimate cooldown rankings is overall an unintuitive way to make Sona focused on late game power. In addition, choosing to have the abilities spammable with low power rather than decent cooldown with higher impact.
Emphasis behind the idea of the mini rework would be to remove a lot more of the passive AoE power in Sona and transfer into interactive actives that both allies and enemies can work around. Rather than colored circles, a goal will be utilizing music within the game to be main indicators for Sona's abilities with visuals still there.
And so, here's my idea. No numbers will be included since I'm not good enough with game balance to set exact numbers.
P: All in the Chorus
Casting a basic ability grants Sona flat movement speed stacking up to X times.
Every 5 basic ability casts will cause the next ability cast to be a chorus, creating a persisting effect for X seconds (Persisting effects scale up with level of Sona, this will be the main source of late game power). Chorus is indicated by a colored circle around Sona similar to her current visuals for main abilities. Range of chorus larger than current AoEs.
(Basic abilities keeping current names, on phone and don't remember them. Visuals will be Sona throwing out her arms, certain music playing to match each ability, and a stream of notes similar to what currently happens spreading to targets. Abilities are mid-range)
Q:
Sends out a power chord dealing damage to a target enemy for X (X% AP) magic damage. If the target dies, the chord spreads in an AoE (500 units?) and becoming louder, dealing 50% bonus damage to enemies in the radius.
Chorus: Allies near Sona for the Chorus deal bonus damage over ~2 seconds (short time is the idea) from basic attacks or abilities. Damage is based on X% bonus AD or X% AP of the ally (whichever is higher) physical if based on bonus AD and magic if based on AP. (Chorus is something that works with all carry and bruiser types but not too strong with on-hit compositions since it's DoT and based on ally stats.
Music that plays: heavy, faster notes expected to be heard in battles from orchestras.
W:
Sona's soft Melody helps herself and allies shrug off damage, shielding those nearby for X (X% AP) damage briefly (like 2-3 seconds).
Chorus: Sona and nearby allies heal over the duration of the chorus for X (X% AP) health. Nearby allies at the end of the chorus are healed for an additional X amount. (3x the amount of the potential healing prior. Counterplay here is seeing the healing chorus start of and forcing enemies to separate from Sona to avoid the large heal).
Music that plays: softer, slower melodies heard typically in clinics of the past giving a feeling of serenity, end of chorus gives a noticable drop.
E:
Send out a wave of sound directly around Sona in a radius damaging enemies for X (X% AP) and slowing them for X% for X seconds.
Chorus: Sona and nearby allies gain X% movement speed for the duration of the chorus.
Music playing: faster, shorter notes akin to techno but with Sona's instrument, something good for a run.
R: Same as it is now but preps Chorus for the next ability.
Aim of this is to create more windows of power for Sona and others to work around, making Sona weaker to dispersion or split push compositions, have some waveclear for solo laning, and feel more impactful. Even though it's not mentioned, cooldowns would be higher on all abilities with the impact of individual abilities being higher. This way the Chorus uses wouldn't be constant until late game when all abilities have had CDs reduced equally with 40% CDR. W and E are more reactive abilities now. For chorus', Q is best for poke and mid-fights, W for mid fights and the quiet in between fights, E for mid fights repositioning and rotating between objectives.
Let me know what you think! (If a rioter sees this, I've been interested in working stuff like this for a while and would love to know how to get an opportunity to intern or work with Riot! :D)
