Why Riot Is So Set On Updating Vel'koz

Nearly everyone is confused as to why the tentacle man is added in the Mid-Season mage update. Many loyal fans don't want an update, no matter how small scope it is. Riot has yet to retract it despite the MASSIVE disapproval on giving a small rework to the most recent traditional mage. The reason why everyone is mad is because of either two reasons:

There are plenty of other, much older champs that would have been better for the update or
Riot might make another Kog'maw or Skarner with this update and no one wants that to happen to Vel'koz.

SOOO.... The only real reason Riot would be so determined to give him an update is because they already have a new mechanic or idea for him and they plan on using it. They think once he is updated we'll be so happy and impressed with this new improved Vel. Let's just hope they're right. But really... so many others need it

Idk fuck Vel Koz.

He's just like Brand but safer and **slightly ##SLIGHTLY harder to play because half brands abilities aren't skillshots

Because he offers literally nothing interesting to his team. He has absolutely no competitive niche.

Riot acknowledges that he's fun to play and has good counterplay, so they probably won't mess with his play patterns at all. But he actually needs a reason to pick him on a team that isn't "well every once in a while the numbers come out to where he has slightly more damage than the 8 other mages that have the exact same stuff on their kit as him"

All the champs you listed either have a solid and recognizable niche (annie, fiddlesticks, ziggs), are not really mages and won't benefit from being included in this rework (galio), or they have much bigger plans for to the point where they won't be able to fit them into this rework (swain)

But does having a defined role over prioritize having a healthy, fun, and in my opinion an interesting kit? I play mages frequently and I recognize the overlap in many of their kits, but even if a champion is unique I don't think that disqualifies them from the mage update. The champs I listed were examples of "not your average mages" but in this case hurts them more than makes them special.

There is absolutely no reason you can't have both, and nothing implies Riot would touch any of the stuff you like about Vel'koz because they have acknowledged that the exact same things you find good about him are good about him.

If it's a numbers thing, he could have easily been put in with the Lucian and Twitch category. He doesn't deserve to be in the big 6. Still the most recent "traditional" mage and he was prioritized over others....
