Executioner's Calling is the most rarely built item in the game...

Painted Celt··114 votes·8,857 views

Excluding Viktor's Viktor champion specific incomplete Hex-Core items (item 3197 item 3196 item 3200) and aggregating different boot enchantments (item 1308 item 1307 item 1305 item 1306 item 1309), Executioner's Calling item 3123 is by far the least built item in the game.

According to Elophant, even Banner of Command item 3060 and Ohmwrecker item 3056 are each about 3x more commonly built.

.

Edit: I just checked back in on this thread and as some people have pointed out, the Elophant data can be somewhat misleading (sorry). While Elophant lists it as the least popular item, the data could be misconstrued. If also counting Mortal Reminder (which is not listed on Elophant), it's technically not the rarest item. However, it is still very rare at around 1 in 40 games total for either Mortal Reminder or Executioner's Calling to be owned at the end of a game. In any case, Executioner's Calling on its own still remains the rarest item at the end of a game, and that is still comparing it to other component items (except for Viktor's incomplete hex-cores as originally mentioned).

Because frankly, it's not worth it unless they have a Swain, Mundo and some crazy lifesteal stacking ADC.

Better off maxing crit and damage and grabbing Giant Slayer rather than trying to counter a 12 second ultimate...

Smithney31 votes

Except that countering the 12 second ultimate is pretty much crucial in certain fights. Without their ultimates, Mundo is just a glorified cleaverbot and Swain a hard-to-utilize DoT mage. Though I didn't do the math, so I might be wrong.

Grievous wounds is REALLY powerful. Mundo regens 72% of his health (with spirit visage). Cut down his healing by 40% drops that to 43.2 percent, which means that grievous wounds effectively ups your damage vs him by 28.8% of his health. Which is usually a LOT.

Furthermore, what it is really doing is increasing the damage you deal by 40% of the enemy's sustain as effectively true damage.

TL;DR: grievous wounds= true damage equal to 40% of enemy's sustain.

LeeDark3 votes

More than that, really, since the Grievous Wounds often enables you to kill him while he is still ulting, so both reducing the part of his ult that does go off, and negating the rest completely.

Plus Mundo pays an immediate price for his health regen. By applying Grevious Wounds the moment he ults, you're doing a lot more damage than he can heal until his ult is lvl3 (and even then depends on his health when he ults)

swain does massive amounts of aoe damage

Blitzidious1 votes

aoe damage.. Swain.. are you certain you're thinking of the right champion? :p

Battlecast Sona6 votes

Swain's bird form in teamfights is hitting 3 people every time it procs. It's pretty crazy, especially if you can hit a multiple person W. I dunno about "massive amounts of damage", but it DOES provide Swain pretty crazy amounts of healing.

Grievous Wounds no longer affect her healing, unless we're talking about her healing from Starcall, in which case: DODGE THE STAR

It's totally worth it. I build it on Hecarim all the time. Had a Renekton earlier who didnt understand why he wasn't winning trades. 800g for infinite grievous and 15 AD is a bargain. Plus it builds into Mortal Reminder, also fantastic. It's a cheap way to make other people's items less valuable.

Azlagor19 votes

elofants statisitcs are not really useable for that. the item statistics go by the items that people have intheir inventory when the game ends, so naturally executioners won't be seen often as you will upgrade it to mortal remainder most of the time. Just that elofant so far does not provide any data on any of the new items, which also means that it's questionable wether their executioners data is based on the recent patch or a different timeframe.. edit: just looked at the statistics closer, seems the last update was 4 months ago...

from my own wxperience i do agree that executioners is very rarly built and that this is one of the bigger reasons for how well mundo is doing, but be carefull with those stattistics, they are often misleading.

Dengeden13 votes

Are you cheating by not including item 3033 in that statistic? >:(

Penns12 votes

I love how people associate 40% self heal- reduction with "unable to heal even 1 HP... also, Mundo just insta dies" lol.

Look at the most popular top laners atm, none of them can afford to build it without getting shit on by Mundo and/ or easy ganks except for Riven (who gets shit on anyway), Trynda (who wins by split pushing anyway) and maybe like a Rengar or a Fiora.

And its pretty much impossible to build it as support, jungler and mid laner except you are an ad assassin...

charcharmunro45 votes

Nobody's saying it makes Mundo die instantly but it DOES really hurt his whole "not dying" thing. He's like Vlad or Swain. He either needs to be focus-fired or needs Grievous Wounds on him to kill him in any reasonable timeframe. And it's still only 800 gold. That's not all that much for anybody.

Well no, it's 800 gold AND the fact that you don't do up to 15% increased damage to targets with a higher max hp than you. I'm guessing that's what Riot was going for when they put it in the item, as a trade off of damage vs utility.

Hoodwink1 votes

Ignite is a really cool summoner spell to use against them, too.

YCitizenSnipsY8 votes

What really funny is how much everyone on the boards begged for the item to return. You would have though with how popular of a topic it was here when it was removed that it was very crucial to the game. But it seems like even people her are just quick to jump on board with circle jerk without actually doing what they say they are.

TurquoiseYoshi1 votes

People wanted it added back in a balanced way, like Morellonomicon. Not on every AA for 3 seconds.

Battlecast Sona4 votes

they add it back, people complain that it's OP. People then complain that Mundo is OP and ask for nerfs. If the item is OP, why isn't it being built more/utilized more, and why is the de-facto health stacking self healing tank considered SUPER strong?

The only Mundo nerf that's required is people buying Mortal Reminder. GD puts WAY too much value on LDR.

TurquoiseYoshi1 votes

Honestly, I have no idea why nobody builds it. Most likely it's the same reason nobody builds QSS, it just doesn't build into a core item for anyone.

Battlecast Sona3 votes

Well, QSS into Mercurial Scimitar is pretty strong now since it gives lifesteal... And Executioner's builds into Mortal Reminder, another Last Whisper upgrade (which is core in every ADC build at 6 items, basically).

llamasx8 votes

Funny how OP people thought this item was going to be, and how useless champs like Mundo, Vlad, and Swain were going to be because of this item. I remember all of those topics being around just a few weeks ago, and highly upvoted...

Yet no one builds it

Zair Umbras2 votes

Because the LW is worthless unless they actually have a decent amount of armor. If the Mundo is running a mostly health build, the LW won't be worthwhile, though you can still drop 800g for the item and finish it later, but still the item itself is completely worthless unless they have an actual decent amount of armor. A full health build is super powerful right now.

Extvia4 votes

If they build armor or not is irrelevant if they regen like Swain or Mundo does. There's literally no reason to not build EC against them, ever. It effectively cuts Mundo's ult regen in half and generally makes Swain's ult a mere waste of mana.

Pyro4 votes

You do realize this is a stat for the component itself, not the full item (Mortal Reminder)?

Mortal Reminder is 25x more popular than Ohmwrecker.

Puynsi3 votes

People buys Ohm?

Sightless663 votes

We're drawing waaaaaaaaaaaay too much from this data. It really means almost nothing. Not only is it completely missing the data for the last whisper upgrades, but it also only determines if an item was bought by looking at whether it was present in an endgame build.

All we can tell from this is that people don't finish games with executioner's calling in their inventory. Well, no shit. I'm finishing that into Mortal Reminder the instant I buy it.

This data is worthless. It tells us nothing of value.

Haestro3 votes

This thread is just dumb. Obviously if there isn't a Mundo, Swain, or other prominent self-heal champ, people won't build it. And they won't be in every game, so people won't build it every game. So this statistic has nothing to do with Mundo being op or not. A more useful statistic would be the % of time someone builds it when a Mundo/Swain is actually picked.

ABlueQuaker3 votes

But does that include if someone buys a whole item 3033 ?? Or gets the LW component first?

Twiggles2 votes

I just played Urgot against Mundo and got item 3123 on my second back. It didn't matter though because he just sat on me and used his insane damage to kill me through my ult's and passive's damage reduction. Grievous wounds didn't help nearly as much as I expected.

Biffolo10 votes

Probably because you played urgot. A fucking orbital laser wouldn't be enough to help him out.

Buying Executioner's Calling sets back the ADC by 800 gold in comparison to the enemy ADC. No decent player is going to rush this item instead of critical chance, AD, and AS items.

By no means EC is a bad item, but it is only a viable option to most ADCs once they have farmed enough gold. Saying that EC is a good counter to Mundo is the same as telling mages to rush arm guards into Zhonyas in Season 4.

Sure, the mages can do that, but rushing arm guards puts themselves behind in mana regeneration and AP.

On a different note, the real reason Mundo is so dominate right now is due to his synergy with Grasp of the Undying and Oppressor. It is impossible to trade against him at all in lane, since he would just cleaver, AA, and then run while stealing back all the damage he sustained. The top lane champions that struggles against Mundo are not the ones that build EC.

ForgiveColour2 votes

thats because grievous wound doesnt counter mundo are you bronze?

Since when? In my experience, Mundo gets ripped by it. especially in teamfights. Grievous is a death sentence for him.

Danman1232 votes

I just want to point out the misleading statistics used in this thread. OP used a very unreliable source that doesn't include the updated items. Looking at lolking.net, there was a finished Executioner's Calling in about .5% of games pretty consistently since its change, which admittedly isn't much. However, Mortal Reminder (the upgraded Executioner's Calling) was built in about 2.5% - 5% of games since its release. Honestly, this doesn't seem too terrible for a niche item.

And for comparison, these champs have been played in the following percentage of games: Mundo: 9.3% Swain: 2.5% Volibear: 6.7%

So with a total 2.5% - 5.5% of games where a grievous wounds item is being built, it's relatively close to the percentage of games that the biggest healers are being played. And since this takes into account all tiers of play, including low-tier play (which I'm assuming has a lower chance of building those items), I feel that players actually are building the item a decent amount as needed.
