Insight on the Utility Tree Changes

This post is about the upcoming changes happening to the utility tree and a little bit of predictions and reasonings to why certain mages in the mid will become the meta post-change hitting LIVE servers.

Let's talk about the biggest change first off all, which is 3 Mana Regen per 5 seconds being increased to 1.5% Missing Mana per 5 seconds but going down the utility tree quite a bit and where the mana regen used to be is being replaced with a flat amount of Mana.

So straight off the back this is a massive nerf to the standard 9 in utility towards mages because they relied so heavily in getting through the early game until they get their dedicated Mana sustain item like Morellos, Archangels, or Grail. If you go more points in the utility tree or even 21 utility then this is a buff and the new mana regen mastery is a 75% increase in regen if you have a chalice without counting for the item's base mana regen.

Math in majour regen values are: 2.5% MAX Mana per 5 seconds for Blue Buff OR 0.5% MAX Mana per second 2% MISSING Mana per 5 seconds for Mana Font [Chalice Passive] OR 0.4% MISSING Mana per second 1.5% MISSING Mana per 5 seconds for the 3 points in the new utility tree mastery OR 0.3% MISSING Mana per second

So with Chalice and let's just say 21 utility for simplicity, you have 0.7% MISSING Mana per second and upon reaching roughly 40% of your total Mana this is an equal regen to Blue Buff and anything lower is MORE regen than what you get from Blue Buff; again this is not taking in chalice/grail's base mana regen. In short, 9 in utility for mages is a nerf, but if a mage can go more into the utility for the 1.5% MISSING Mana or even 21 utility then this is a majour buff; not everyone can do this since they rely heavily on 21 offense, but a certain class of champions can which are Utility Mages and a lot of aspects in the utility page they can abuse.

Okay, so the mages I think will have great benefits from going 21 utility will be the likes of Zilean, Lulu, and Orianna as a top 3 since these are all mages that are not reliant upon their damage but rather their utility, another high contender is Anivia but due to her very high skill cap [she is the hardest champion to both play and master by a lot] I will not include her, even though she benefits equally to 21 offense because of her high damage output and 21 utility because she has high utility and sustain damage from her ultimate (aka Anivia is an utility hyper mage).

Basically having 3 mastery points to increase Mana Font's value indirectly by 75% is pretty significant especially on already Grail users and if you go 3/4 of the gold masteries these champions benefit a lot, especially Orianna and Lulu, where the pick pocket mastery gives on-hit gold on of champions who have passives that encourage basic attacking; with extra benefits for increase ambient gold and starting gold allowing these champions to get their items faster and reach late game slightly earlier. Another benefiting factor for 21 utility [which will benefit Anivia the most because no mobility] is the 21st point for roaming mobility in case you ever want to roam to the side lanes, but it is also useful to just get to lane slightly faster.

Anyways, I believe I talked about my majour points I wanted to talk about and little bit of a prediction to what I think will rise in the meta thanks to the upcoming mastery changes.

So see you guys around and have a nice day! ~ Stacona

tl:dr : utility mastery changes is a nerf for standard 9 utility, but a buff to deeper in utility masteries or even 21 utility

Lets keep in mind its also a buff for mage supports.

Sona is pleased

0-9-21 masteries Sona is free meat. You need to invest deeper in def to hope survive the current bot lanes.

Rinky Dinky2 votes

Not if you have any idea how to play her/position

Current bot lanes and junglers don't give a shit how well you position as one of the squishiest and most immobile champ. They just go ham. Hell as a Sona main, I love a mirror match with 0-9-21 AP quints Sonas on the other side. I just call free meat to my ADC and we get fed off her.

Rinky Dinky2 votes

and as a fellow Sona main, I can ensure you that you are wrong, and frankly are wasting Sona's potential.

I suggest you play Nami, because it has become terribly obvious to me you have no idea how to play sona to her strengths.

You do realize that if you're positioned correctly, no amount of Zenith Blades is going to touch her.

Going 0-9-21 is just fine. Squishy support Sona is a thing. Surprisingly enough, tanky Sona is also a thing. You favor one style, obviously, but if you really think that glass cannon Sona is bad because you don't believe in positioning then you're not exactly the shining example of a support main.

Most supports go 0 9 21 unless you are a melee tank like leona or braum which the mana may be better for 0 21 9 over the mana regen for tank supports --- but all ranged supports it is a definite buff overall --- i am bringing up the potential viability of utility mages in the mid lane getting played because of the utility tree changes

I'm willing to bet that was the intended purpose of the change.

Stacona1 votes

It is to buff the utility tree and make the early stages of the tree slightly weaker, so yea-

but see a shift in utility mages for the meta will be cool for the mid lane

Taking a supportive mid laner with 21 in utility means your team misses out on a lot of damage, so I guess it is worth the trade-off. As long as there are mid laners who can deal with a passive laner who has massive mana regen.

Rinky Dinky1 votes

Really depends on the comp.

It gives utility mages the pushes they need to be viable, which also makes carry toplaners more appealing.

I really think a few damage mages will need some buffs after this though.

Syndra in particular comes to mind.

Oh, and as far as champs who love passive laners.... Veigar Viktor Cassiopeia Leblanc Mordekaiser

Stacona1 votes

they reverted most of syndra's nerfs , it is just a very tiny dsamage nerf pre-6 , once you hit 6 there is no difference, i guiess Riot wants Syndra more late game, since she was so dominant early, mid and late game something needed to be toned down -- they 100% reverted the stun width nerfs like a patch after it happened

veigar and leblanc want to snowball, so they dont want to fight passive lanes becuase then they dont get kills to snowball - it is hard to kill utility mages like Zilean, Lulu, Orianna, and Anivia --- viktor and cassiopeia get played now, mordekaiser needs a little bit more work like a new Q

Stacona1 votes

but Zilean, Lulu, Orianna are not known for their damage but their utility so going more utility can be very good with them, plus with the extra gold for going deep utility you can have more dedicated farm to a more carry damage top and your marksman who is a high priority to protect as an utility mage mid

Sounds great; more viable builds is a + to me.

14-0-16 will probably work in some situations, but not for your average player in your average game. You're dropping a very noticeable amount of damage, and gaining a near chalice, 40 starting gold, and extended buff duration. If you're not getting regular blues I doubt it will be worth it. But if you are you're swimming in mana.

14-0-16 compared to 21-0-9

the good

  • almost chalice passive
  • 40 more starting gold
  • +20% buff duration
  • 2% spellvamp or 6 gold a minute

the bad

  • lost 3% damage multiplier
  • lost 6% dual penetration
  • no more 0.05 ap damage on auto attack
  • unable to max 5% ap bonus

Personally I would like to see the 10-15 range in utility get a little more power for mages to make 14-0-16 a really good option. As of right now you're losing a lot of damage and scaling to be able to lane and siege for longer...

14-0-16 may have its use but it'll remain niche and hidden probably.

The higher values are more ambient gold and on-hit gold of pickpocket - the starting gold is nice for an extra pot

The thing to why i said utility mages benefit is because they are not known for their damage so damage multipliers are not a huge deal to miss out on so having extra gold and mana regen can be worth it for them so they can always have the mana and the items to support their team heavily

But it may not be done for the utility mages being picked until the Koreans do it because instead of doing things first NA has to follow and hence always be behind and catching up to the Koreans

also 2 gold per 10 is 12 gold a minute this isn't even hard math plus 3 gold per basic attacks per 3 seconds if you can maximize this you get 60 gold and 2 gold per 10 for 72 gold a minute if you can maximize this fully, which is super hard to do so you are looking at more like ~30 gold a minute during laning phase which is quite a bit when it adds up

Mm...

I was thinking something like a 14-0-16 setup could be viable. Though as I reconsider it it'd probably be better to just forget about the hybrid setup and trade executioner/dangerous game and all in into utility for 5% cdr and out of combat movement...

. ..

These mastery pages lose so much early game offensive power, and the thing is a lot of utility mages like Karma, Lulu, and Orianna have strong early lanes... but maybe it can be compensated with the gold and extra potion and mana regen...

Stacona1 votes

Karma is a early game lane bully and needs her damage, she is in a different category and a weird one hence to her not really getting played

Lulu, Orianna, and Zilean are more so their waveclear and utility aspect for the late game since utility is the best scaling value in the game and if hyper marksmen like Ashe and Jinx are hot right now this is even more in favour of the utility mages [of course Kog'Maw and Twitch are hypers too with kog being either a hyper mage or hyper marksman, since the Tristana changes she does not scale as much as she used]

So with late utility page buffs on top of the current favoured marksmen and even Lucian can be really strong late game if he has the support of a mid Zilean, Lulu, or Orianna (this is just a top 3 that i can think of on the top of my head) all three have super efficient way for protecting allies, zilean has either a uber speed buff or slow down with decent burst and good waveclear (grail and ludens is pretty good with him, and prob get deathcap after that since the flat ap is a little more valuable than penetration, but void staff is a must for all mages); Lulu the obvious with speed buffs, pix damage, waveclear (the weakest of these 3), two shields and slows with one shield being a potential knock up and gives health instead of shield (the ultimate does apply as a shield and not as a heal even if it can heal you in some scenarios); Orianna with super good waveclear, harrass tools, aoe slows and speed buffs, shields with resistances buffs on it, and the glorious Shockwave which seems like half the time orianna is intimidating the air around her (every single orianna player has ulted themselves multiple times, it is easier to mess up this way than you would think; and by ulting themselves i do mean ulting the air around her, THAT AIR NEVER SAW IT COMING!!!)

this comment is just getting lengthy

but point being if the champion is more reliant on utility over damage then high utility or 21 utility is worth considering over 21 offense since it favours the champion better where as for someone like Anivia who is a utility hyper mage she has a EQUAL mix of very high damage and very high utility (i do consider Anivia as one of the most balanced champions and unique champions across the board) so Anivia is perfectly viable for 21 utility or 21 offense with offense favouring more early game power and utility helping her get into late game and her late game power - yes utility will obviously be less damage than offense [duh] but by your majour core build you wont notice a huge difference or any difference at all really
