Build paths are more stagnate now than they've ever been.

It seems like almost every singe class has an item they have to rush first.

  • Tank: item 3068

  • Fighter/Juggy: item 3071

  • Mage: item 3165

  • ADC: item 3153

  • Assassin: item 3142

  • Support: item 3107

  • Jungler: item 1412

Can we do something about this? Because it feels like shit building the same items every single game. Forcing a core build across the majority of multiple classes makes the game feel dull and boring. The only time you can rush anything else is if you're super far ahead or else it puts you way behind.

Lots of Champions use items differently. Urgot rushes Tear, Aatrox will pick up BoRK. Many mages will pick up Catalyst into RoA, and any jungler who doesn't scale off of AD awesomely, will build a different jungle item. Fighter's will often pick up a Hydra or Tiamat, and Tank's building Sunfire, in an AP matchup, is just stupid.

You see, here is the thing:

As a game with items in it, that have numbers and what not on them, there is always going to be an optimal build path for any given role/class/lane/gender/sex... you get the point...

Riot switches the items around, nerfs some items, buffs others, introduces new items, and that is honestly the best you can do.

What item you build first has SOME variety based on 2 things, individual champs and matchups.

For instance: Renekton - item 3071 Aatrox - item 3153 Skarner - item 3057 Akali - item 3146

I could continue this list for a lot of other champions, who rush things like item 3070, item 3165, item 3115, item 3074 and then we have to put situational items like: item 3068, item 3001, item 3065, item 3157 etc that all depend on matchup.

The same champions will almost always (see situational items) rush the same first item because it is what is optimal for that champion. You are living in a dreamworld if you want a game where the "Tank vs melee AD top lane match" can build either Sunfire, Randuins, or Thornmail first and it be an equally valuable buy. Not being rude or anything but its just the way it is.

Mordekaisers build diversity is great. But he's a very strange champion

How would you solve this, exactly? No matter how diverse you make items, people are going to rush the item that gives the best all-around stats for their champion first.

Though in the case of Cleaver and Morello, the 20% CDR is the big problem with them. I personally don't think any offensive item should give 20% CDR by itself. They already give damage, a huge chunk of CDR for their abilities is just double-dipping. If you knock half the CDR off them, you can move it to other items.

if you take 10% cdr off of say, Black Cleaver, one of two things has to happen:

  1. you have to buff its other stats (haha yeah right)

or

  1. Make it cheaper to buy to keep its same overall slot efficiency.

As a Renekton player, I wouldn't mind this, but I dont think my opponents would want me getting that item any sooner than I can already :/

Cleaver only loses ~9% gold efficiency if you halve its CDR, putting it at 91%. (It has exactly 100% stat efficiency currently.)

Its efficiency doesn't consider the worth of its two passives, though, so the item's actually considerably more slot-efficient than it seems. Same with BotRK, which is only ~89.77% efficient on stats alone.

Meanwhile, Morellonomicon is 112% stat-efficient before its two passives, which gets cut down to 100% by halving its CDR.

Ill take your word for it since I dont know the math :P

Im just thinking that RIOT hasn't really don a ton to it overall, so its probably pretty close to their desired slot efficiency as is :P

I disagree.

While most people do build similar first items (Junglers in particular have always rushed their jungle item first), what you build after that is entirely dependent.

And even then, in some matchups, it's worth delaying your 'first' item to get a component of something else, like a Hexdrinker on a FIghter or a Spectre's Cowl on a Tank.

Also, having bread and butter items that certain classes crave makes balancing significantly easier.

It's because riot wants to lock champions behind their classes items. Hilariously assassins didnt have much choice of what to build before. Now they still don't have real choices.

Actually they're less stagnant nowadays than they've been throughout much of the past, I remember back in early seasons when half the items in the game were generally crap on most champs, and so you only saw the same 20-30 items ever built, and as you can imagine, there were a small number of those items that were regularly first buys, and that depended largely on what class you were playing (don't even get me started on old broken things like GP5 abuse with Philosopher's Stone and stuff).

Will never change when items are primarily stats with bonuses attached. people will always first-build the item that gives them the best combination.

I mean, you could probably make an argument to completely separate all stats, or make them more heavily specialized (i.e high armor low HP, no middle grounds) but that just hurts tanks and bruisers while most mages and carries are left unscathed.

I'm just saying you might see items like Death's Dance considered more often if Black Cleaver wasn't automatically the best item 90% of the time due to having good stats and most notably 20% CDR.

Same with Morellonomicon being automatically the best mid-lane item 90% of the time because of, again, 20% CDR.
