under a certain mmr you lose your ranking altogether , maybe the equivalent of a bronze 6?

There would be no change in matchmaking just by adding another division. Your groups are formed according to your MMR, not rank. If X and Y player would be paired together right now, they still would be even if X was put into Bronze "6".

They removed that for a reason. I don't know what that reason was, maybe because it felt unsatisfying to be an unranked player.
This would accomplish nothing. From bronze well into silver it's all the same players, a mix of bad and good (relative) bouncing around. This would do nothing.
Only way to fix that mess is matchmaking based off of skill and not win loss ratio.
