Is Dragon Having the Right Effect on the Game?

I wondered about the dragon changes as soon as the preseason started, and the first week of LCS games has given me to push I needed to post about it. Put simply, the changes to dragon were implemented so that dragon would feel as important as baron. Instead, I feel these changes have made dragon even less important in the game.

We have seen many LCS teams pretty much ignore dragon, especially since the buff it gives early game simply isn't very strong. It's power is much reduced early game, compared to the previous iteration when it gave a lot of gold. In the first week, we didn't see a single team get the 5 dragon buff; but, more importantly, we didn't see teams setting up meaningful fights around dragon as was intended. It's not really that strong late game, either, except in the special case where a team can somehow get all 5 (and not already be crushing the game).

Now, I put this in the game balance board because I don't want this to turn into an LCS discussion, exclusively. I see these same patterns in my own games. Dragons just don't matter very much. You can mostly ignore it, and it isn't a problem. People keep talking about how OP it is that people can solo dragon... I wonder if that's even true, given how little it really does for the team.

So, before we get into a discussion about changing dragon, please take the poll. Do you notice dragon being a big deal in your games? Or do you think it's mostly ineffective? Do teams who are already winning just take it, and dragon has little to do with their win, or is it actually a game-changer?

Most importantly, does anyone else feel like dragon has become a "win more mechanic," which allows the team who is winning to get more small bonuses, but if the losing team gets them, they aren't major enough to affect the outcome?

3 stacks matters, the others are kind of superfluous unless you're splitpushing or base trading or something.

It's because dragon scales with existing gold and can't be directly translated to vision control. The second point is underlooked, but that was the draw of early dragons previously. Sometimes it gave you an edge via completed items, but the real edge was giving every player 1-2 wards to drop wherever they wanted. Now with the new dragon, if you go take 2 outer turrets in response, you gain map presence, ~300 gold not including the farm in the lane, and you can deny cs to the enemy laners.

It is mostly a insurance for late game where one bad team fight can decide the game, to give your team a better chance of winning that fight (especially if you got 5 stacks, then playing it right really can decide the game on one fight). Otherwise it is about denying / delaying the chance of the other team getting five stacks.

As I understand it, pushing turrets down quickly was suppose to win early-mid game vs taking dragon if you are successful at taking them and closing the game quickly.

Here is an example of dragon turning the game around: http://www.twitch.tv/skiaasteri/c/5828482

LCS aren't challenging early game dragon, because they're at a higher skill level than the rest of the community.

1: It's a waste of time since the enemy will come to defend the objective, even if it's a stalemate, and this slows everyone's ability to farm. I.E. they're missing valuable CS, etc. 2: The vision will always be able to detect when someone is challenging, so the jungler's don't even bother in the first place.

At any other MMR of the game, there's more care for it in the early game because vision isn't held as a high priority in that location, and rather in the nearby vicinity to avoid being ganked. Therefore people can get away with starting dragon, and by the time bot lane comes down the river and the enemy team notices that the enemy lane is mia, it's too late to challenge.

I've played some mid level skill matches where both teams left the dragon for twenty some odd minutes, because neither team wanted to be stuck in a position that was dangerous. So it's usually just left until a team can safely challenge it.

It's an objective that helps you win and but will rarely be the one thing that seals the deal. Five stacks pretty much never happens. Heck, it's a bad sign when it happens, it either means one team is terrible at closing the game or at controlling Dragon.

The primary cause of losses is still lanes going out of control and people getting picked off in the unwarded jungle past the 30 min mark. And honestly, that's fine. We're losing games of League of Legends, not Defense of the Dragon.

What I think is dumb is how the dragon now gets people to play. Before it was just more gold. So you could be full build and have no reason to stall for more dragons to get stronger. But now you do. And I hate it when there are dragons that people just intentionally stall the game out trying to get more of since they wanted that 5th dragon before they were confident in their attempts to end the game.

My other problem with it is that it seems like the first and fifth dragons matter a good amount. But the others don't seem like they matter much. I liked the more even strength worth of rewards that they gave before.

Third dragon has more impact than the first. It gives you more leeway in dictating when and where a fight happens, something much harder to obtain than raw stats.

A wise man once said "All agility heroes should have Yasha. You don't need to upgrade it, but it gives you chase or escape, damage, and attack speed."
