Now I can see who's spam pinging or troll-pinging my items because they don't like my build, and I can mute them and their pings. Thanks. I've been waiting for this for a long time.

See with me, I involuntarily start playing worse. If I don't mute him fast enough, then my brain starts to fill with adrenaline and other chemicals and my mechanics start getting worse. Sometimes to the point of clicking wrong targets in fights and dying.

And there's nothing I can do about it, because I'm human. That's what brains do. Release horrible chemicals in horrible situations. Well, I guess I could mute him faster. But that's something I'm slowly learning to train myself to do.

Another situation: sometimes I let the chat cause me to make bad decisions. Someone complaining for help in champ select before the game even starts? Alright, level 2 ganking that lane, even though the enemy is ranged.... *you have been slain - FIRST BLOOD* WELP bad decision. Shoulda just muted him right at 0:00 and played like I normally do.

Aw man. I had this anti-troll strategy I'd use that relied on the anonymous pings. When somebody would get mad and start pinging another person's build, I'd ping other things on our team at random in between them so it looked like one person was just spam-pinging with no purpose at all.

Nobody had time to argue about builds with pings because the information overload of all the random pings between the real ones. Oh well, its probably better this way. Now you can mute anyone that gets too ping-happy.

I feel that if people often ping your items, the problem isn't them pinging the items, but your build.
Blaming it on them and muting them is rather counterproductive.
Better to try and understand what your mistake is (if you did one, sometimes they might just not know that there's a legit reason to your build) and change your build accordingly.
Unless you "play for fun".

MagicalDemons32 votes

No the problem is that people spam ping your items regardless if it is the correct build or not. They just want to be a dick.

It never happened in one of my games. I can't really see why would someone do that, especially if the intent is being a dick. There are better ways to be a dick in LoL.
Maybe I'm lucky, or maybe the problem is what I wrote. Who knows? (the moustache)

RocketRelm1 votes

There's two benefits to being an asshole this way.

One: Communicates with a single button press what'd take a sentence to convey "You f**king noob why build that". Two: "Plausible Deniability".

Removing #2 is a benefit to the game, I think.

Bârd5 votes

No, that isn't really a thing. If your build isn't stupid, they aren't gonna flame you by pinging your items (unless they're just idiots who don't know what a good item build is), they're gonna flame you with missing pings and chat.

There's plenty of reasons to ping items.

If I see an Amumu going item 3027 I'm pinging that. If I see any ADC but Draven Kalista buying an early item 3072 I'm pinging that. If I see Warwick building item 3153 I'm pinging that. If you buy item 1083 and haven't proc'd it by 20 minutes, I'm pinging that.

And if Amumu is an amumu main and has built that items for hundreds of games, he's just gonna get mad at you for pinging it. That item carried him to his current ELO. It's not going to be the reason you lose that game.

Bârd7 votes

Incorrect.

If he's been building the same items every game for hundreds of games, that means he's neither adapting to the patches nor to the situation at hand.

His poor itemization would be the flaw keeping him at his current elo, and his sub-par item choices may very well lose us the game, since he'd be markedly less effective than he would be if he was building well.

Even if the build is good (which RoA Amumu is not), you shouldn't blindly purchase the same shit every game.

Lethality Jhin is solid, but you bet your ass I'm pinging your items if you're going item 3142 item 3147 into Malphite.

MagicalDemons19 votes

Ah so you're the one who pings everyone else's builds if they aren't to your liking.

Bârd2 votes

If my allies can't tell the difference between criticism of their itemization and a personal attack, that's their own problem.

I'd rather have a useful ADC who is slightly annoyed at me than a useless ADC who is confused as to why he can't kill the enemy despite having a gold lead.

Venomar6 votes

Ping spamming someone's items is a personal attack you mongoloid.

See, that was a personal attack, I called you a mongoloid. Proper Criticism of your shitty attitude would have been "don't you think you would get better results by addressing thier build and your concerns wirth thier choices in relation to the team composition and the champions strengths and weaknesses in chat, and ask them why they are choosing the items they are?". That creates introspection, which is the core goal of criticism, and if it doesn't achieve thay goal, it's not criticism.

See calling you delusional is a personal attack. Pinging an item isn't a personal attack. It might be considered that by delusional people. But it isn't.

Illâoi Evê Siôn13 votes

Hey, if I can weigh in here: Just pinging an item isn't a statement. It's inherently neutral on its own, which isn't necessarily a good thing since you want to offer constructive criticism. However, League culture and experience with spam pings has warped even a single item ping into something negative for a lot of players.

If you do want to offer valid criticism, try sticking to a constructive statement you just adjust to the situation instead, like: "Hey, Amumu. RoA is a bad purchase for you since you have a much better option in Abyssal Mask. Please consider building that in the future instead" or something similar. If the person does feel attacked then, it's entirely their fault.

Spacesuit Spiff3 votes

This. Item pinging just comes across as impotent rage of idiots losing their fool minds because you didn't build what they saw on LCS last night, unless there's some obvious other context (ie an enemy straight up killing themself on your thornmail). Because that's what it is 99% of the time.

And it takes remarkably little to set these people off. When people don't know their way around the item system, they can comfortably get mad about nearly anything.

Supreme Senpai691 votes

Exactly. If my item is wrong tell me. I ping items to point out power spikes. Like.. Hey guys, I have my redemption and it's ready to be used for this fight. Or hey guys watch out that Khazix has Duskblade. Because that's all pinging does-- it's just directing attention at it.

If I ping my top laners boots of mobility, it's just directing attention towards it. And why am I doing that as the bot lane support? Obviously just to troll. Granted If i say "Hey you should build this instead of this because this" they're just going to intent feed and then AFK because this game is toxic and its players are crybabies. But still. Pinging items is annoying.

chipndip12 votes

Here's my problem: HE'S right and you're not agreeing with him because spam pinging is mean. The dude's explaining the mentality behind pinging someone's items rather than "?" pinging their corpse. If someone spam pings your items, you're usually building like a fucking moron. I'd do the same thing, honestly, but I take the route of specifically stating what I want people to build, instead. But yeah...people spam ping items when your items are stupid or off-meta.

53012 votes

I don't like this statement:

That item carried him to his current ELO.

Unless that item is ardent censer during the ardent censer meta, no it probably hasn't. There hasn't been a single item as strong as ardent censer by itself for as long as I can remember. An off build like banner and zzrot portal on Garen mid isn't going to boost your rank, for example. Something like AP Ezreal isn't going to boost your rank unless it becomes meta. Usually these builds can be replaced by another item, multiple items or champion.

Most off-meta builds are found at a lower rank, you can usually find evidence by looking at the top of the ladder in major servers. Granted, there are exceptions (for example rat irl is known for his Twitch, and jungles with him too. Pink Ward, while usually found lower on the ladder, one tricks Shaco top) but usually they are uncommon. On the opposite side of challenger is bronze, which is where weird builds are more common. Youtubers like Kshaway and thelolhounds sometimes put players like these on their videos. For example, in a recently uploaded thelolhounds video part of his bronze spectates series, I saw a Shaco with a bloodthirster and a death's dance. Obviously that build is garbage.

An Amumu who buys RoA would probably have a higher winrate with a full tank build, a liandries instead of RoA or even a full AP build.

It's not going to be the reason you lose that game.

Maybe not, but it's possible. A Sona with lich bane can make a game much more different than a game in which the Sona has ardent censer. The same can happen when a tank jungler has an adaptive helm instead of a locket, or a Vayne against 2 reliable CCs who buys a zeal instead of a QSS during mid game. Ninja tabi, arguably one of the most broken items is able to completely warp the state of a lane, an assassin's power level, etc. If a Yasuo is able to buy an early ninja tabi against Zed, the lane is over, and this can turn the game into a win if Yasuo is good at the game. An ADC with a ninja tabi against something like Camille Kha'Zix reduces a ton of their damage, and if the support has one too then they lose a lot of their threat. A RoA at 10 minutes is far more different than a RoA at 20 minutes on Amumu or for any AP character in the game. Power spikes are very important and buying certain items at certain times can completely warp the outcome of the game

Yes, it most certainly did, assuming they didn't just start that build. Carried to ELO doesn't mean carried to plat. They had as much success or failure as they've had through this build, so if they're high ELO, it likely got them there. If they're not high ELO, well, I don't think you have much room to talk, getting in their ELO and all.

Play your game. Let him play his. Some people want to smash through the screen and control the other guy's mouse, but that's not what League is about.

Disulfiram1 votes

You don't get the point: if there's one person between you and an Amumu main who knows if RoA is good on Amumu, that's the Amumu main, not you. You barely know what his skills do, while the main likely knows the champ inside out.

You barely saw him sometimes, maybe watched an LCS where he was picked, and that's not knowledge of the champ nor a good guide of what is good on Amumu in every situation. The main on the other hand, in addition to what little "knowledge" you might have, also has lots of experience, likely read a guide or two, probably theoricrafts his build too.

Jesus is Savior28 votes

You still had a hunters machette at 20 minutes.

But isnt the completed jungle item one of the most gold effcient items in the game?

Warrior is 90% gold efficient without the smite. So I have to smite champions (not monsters) for it to be gold efficient. If my smite is ever not up for a fight, then I am handicapped greatly.

Infinity Edge is 107% gold efficient, and is always available in fights.

Phantom Dancer is 97% gold efficient without both its passives. It could almost be arguable that this is a better item than warrior (or bloodrazor) outright in almost all situations, and both cost about the same and have similar effects.

Berserker Greaves is 128% gold efficient (!?!?)

Warrior also doesn't scale properly into a crit build. It only gives one of the desired stats (AD). All other items give 2 of the desired stats (crit+AD or crit+attack speed). So warrior will delay powerspikes because other items scale together with each other (similar to how a deathcap scales with all your other AP items - in a crit build, every crit item you buy makes all your previous purchases that much more powerful). So finishing my jungle item might be a nice early game spike, but only for a small window of time. After that window of time it'll just be handicapping me, and other items would have been better purchases. (And that "window of time" is pretty much "until next back").

Finishing the jungle item will also hurt you even more if you need to counter-build anyone (eg: finishing your lifesteal item early to counter a Rammus). Now your crit items aren't just being delayed by your lifesteal item which is required to counter the fed Rammus, but they're also being delayed by your jungle item.

EDIT: Oh, and saving my smite for monsters and only monsters also helps me farm faster and get items quicker.

DeadUnborn1 votes

yeah for IMO jungle items are only worth for:

Tanks, or bruiser that want to finish cinderhulk after getting some damage AP champs because you need the mana sustain and movement speed is nice Some hyper ealy burst AD champs like Vi, Panth, Lee and Kha. Sometimes it is still better to rush duskblade though

Wirth bruisers (trundle, warwick, rek sai, kayn into rhaast, hecarim(Trinity into tank), etc) I find it is usually better to rush tiamat into trinity force, deaths dance or BC, and then go tanky for mid game

Serika Zero1 votes

many champions can get away without building the jungle item. And heck, are doing even better when they do not build it. You need the machete or talisman for the exp portion of it: item 1041 "special bonus exp". If you clear lets say, red buff, and you have smite, but you don't have the machetee or talisman, you won't get lv2, you will still be lv1, because you don't get the 'special bonus exp' from the jungle monsters which the jungle item gives.

a lot of champions, especially AD ones can skip the jungle item entirely. Such as rengar, kha, yi, ww etc. Mainly because they don't rely as heavily on mana and can clear the jungle easily with minimal mana cost (most damage coming from auto attacks), while AP champions such as Eve, Diana, Amumu, etc, can't clear the jungle properly without mana. So, they need the jungle item for the extra mana it gives. item 1402 /item 1414 hitting a large monster with its effect (aoe damage from charging) restores 25% of missing mana.

Meanwhile, AD champions can rush: item 3077 item 3147 item 3046 etc and still be fine. And without bothering to upgrade the jungle item. And in most cases, those item synergyze better with the champion. Such as kha/rengar + duskblade or WW with tiamat. Than they do with warrior.

And if you think about it. item 1400 2600 gold, if you build this first, you will be 2300gold behind of getting your first true power spike item. Like, lets say item 3147 (2900g). And doing that (completing the jungle item) hurts your early game a lot.

I dislike it. I ping items to teammates in case they haven't seen it yet, or ping an item to indicate the reason I lost that fight to an enemy.

Strigina4 votes

Then you are not the person OP is talking about. It's ok to ping an item to make your teammates aware of it and if you are only doing this, you shouldn't be concerned about the fact your teammates can see you are the one who is pinging. But players who have to ping your items to question your build or usage of it (/wave to all players who have to ping my support items because they can't see it's on cd) deserve to be muted.
