How do you define stealth?

I'm genuinely curious to see how people, casuals, pros, and Rioters define stealth. Is there a definition we can all agree on?

I don't understand the question. If you are talking about literal, in-game definitions, Stealth has the two categories of Camouflage and Invisibility, nothing else.

Stealth has a dictionary definition. If you read it you'll notice that it doesn't mesh with Riot's definition, i.e. 'the in-game definition'.

Stealth is:

Cautious and surreptitious action or movement; Behavior intended to allow one to escape notice; the quality or characteristic of being furtive or covert.

Riot uses the word 'stealth' when they really mean invisibility. Any champion can be played stealthily, as stealth is a process, a playstyle, a mindset. Yet when casuals, pros, Rioters talk about stealth, it's always in relation to a few specific champions and their abilities that allow them to become invisible on a whim.

You can be invisible without being stealthy. Invisibility is a prerequisite AND product of (successful) stealth.

And the word 'stealthed' doesn't exist in any dictionary, as it's a result of online gamer speak.

It seems like you aren't asking what their definition of Stealth is, but rather are disagreeing with it.

I think it's pointless or even detrimental to try and broaden the definition, because if you want to say "any avoidance of visual detection is 'stealth'" then so is simply being in the fog-of-war. When you go down that path, useful communication starts to break down for no good reason, which is why they have defined it as the two different categories.

(I thought you and other arbiters were only blue in PB&M? Did that change recently or am I just crazy?)

It changed recently. There are some that it's not shown in still, like Report a Bug.

I do disagree with Riots definition, and I wanted to see if anyone defined stealth in accordance with its actual meaning.

And on the contrary, I'm not broadening the def of stealth. Im using stealth to mean precisely what the word means. It is impossible to have a meaningful discussion about stealth if our definitions are incorrect or contradictory.

You misunderstand me. You say I'm defining stealth as "any avoidance of visual detection" and go on to mention the fog of war as providing stealth by that definition.

Stealth is deliberately trying to avoid detection or discovery.

The fog of war provides invisibility, as does brush. Invisibility provides the potential for stealth.

Stealth is invisibility, camo, and that thing Hai tried to do as zed at worlds a couple seasons back. In the vast majority of scenarios, only the first two are relevant to league due to the abudance of sources of vision but only those handful of ways to avoid it, and usually you can't be confident in the latter working since you aren't sure if theres wards (also, it didn't work in the end anyway).
