Ryze is gated by minions

Duh. Of course he is, every mage with a linear skill shot is gated by minions on some level. But is Ryze gated TOO heavily by them? The majority of Ryze's damage output comes from landing E-charged Qs. When Ryze is forced to fight when the enemy has a minion wave nearby they can duck into, Ryze is put at a disadvantage most mages don't have to deal with, because they can usually clear the waves hyper fast. Ryze has set up his E on the entire wave and then blast it with a Q, but the time that takes to do is very significant, and minion waves are very finnicky, forcing Ryze to put himself into awkward spots just to cover the whole wave in the charges.

I'm not trying to call Ryze's rework a failure because of this, in fact, it's because of the visual update to his theme that I've been playing the champion so much more. But I feel like this kit has left you with little to no levers to mess with lest he become way too strong. Maybe if the root became a skill shot that couldn't pass through minions, you could turn the Q into a pass through ability that hits everything on its way through? I'm sure there are many ways to go about making Ryze feel better as a champion, but that's just one suggestion I have.

tl;dr Ryze is put at more of a disadvantage in a fight with the presence of an enemy minion wave than other mages are

The main advantage I've found is that most other AP mages get their waveclear every 8-10 seconds, during which Ryze can set off multiple E-Q domino combos.

One thing I've done, if this makes sense, is use spell fluxed minions to zone the enemy away so I have time for the next one. Instead of using Q right after E, I wait until another E would be available while some of the creeps are fluxed. Then when my next E is up, I can choose if I want to detonate that wave or not based on where it ends up.

I don't disagree with what you say but I think he has the tools to work around it. It is tricky if the enemy mid is really aggressive though.

Oh totally, I'm not saying minion waves completely butcher his ability to fight people, but sometimes I feel like I'm fighting the minion waves more than I'm fighting the other guy

Like I said I don't disagree. The thing that really gets to me is that sometimes the wave sets up so you can spell flux the whole thing, and sometimes flux won't bounce to the ranged minions from the melee minions. Means I usually end up waiting for cannon minions if I want an aggressive combo.

That part especially annoys me XD It looks like I'll get the whole wave in two fluxes and then the mage minions are like LOL NOPE

The worst part is it's a range difference of like 30 units, so you can't always tell from looking at the wave if E will bounce to the ranged minions or not. Sometimes it's not worth using it it won't reached the ranged creeps.

However, sometimes the enemy champion conveniently positions themselves to act as a jump for E to reach the back minions. That's always nice.

Most mage get reasonable cd on their skill .. all ryze need are 4-5 sec for his EEQ combo

Btw lasthitting minion with E automatacally apply the AOE effct ... he is actually a very safe poker

That's why ryze can keep them in place with his rune prison when he has an opening and then EQ them
