My support just got an S rank with a average score. Why are you kids complaining?

thats an average thresh score and he got S
if you kids aren't getting S you must be doing something wrong

It's the 4 kills plus his assists.
If you get kills as a support then you have a higher chance of getting an S, because supports don't get kills. It compares you to the average player of that champ, and seeing as most support mains do not go for kills, getting kills as a support boosts your chances of an S.
The problem with this is you are betraying your role for a higher grade.
supposedly from what I've read the way you get your letter rank is based on an average from all people using that champ in your elo/mmr range, so if lots of people use thresh and they suck, it becomes easier to get S rank because the average is low, but if lots of people start getting S rank then the average rises and becomes harder, therefore not being an effective tool for measuring skill or performance.
Thresh is popular in all elo though

I believe it only takes into account the average in your own elo though, like the average in bronze if you're in bronze, the average in silver if you're silver, etc. so if you're bronze and there are a lot of new/bad threshes the chances of you getting S on thresh in bronze will be higher/easier
MMR is not a factor, so as a bronze you're compared to everyone from unranked legit first time players, to top tier challenger gods.

I doubt that since then low elos would have incredibly difficult times getting S ranks due to high averages, or everyone in high elos would almost laways get S ranks due to low averages.
They've explicitly confirmed that MMR is not a factor, so if it seems otherwise then it's just a plusebo effect.
Besides that, pro players do pretty consistently get S ranks, and bronze players do rarely get S ranks. I'm only low plat, and I almost always get an S- on Janna, and I expect the shinier folks can average hgiher ranks still.
The fact bronze is playing against bronze mitigates the fact they're bad to an extent. The crazy bloodbath world of low elo can sometimes result in pretty crazy KDAs compared to the more controlled and cs oriented world of high elos, so that why it's not totally impossible for people in bronze to get S ranks when they have a good game.
(Also, S+ means you did in the top 2% of performances, and top 2% isn't actually 'that' hard when you consider the top 2% of all players [many of whom aren't playing any given champ in a given role] are 'only' mid-high plat and above, so you don't need to be a challenger god to get an S+, much less get an S-.)
If you thought enough about it you'd realise that a support getting an S with an average score is evidence of the problem rather than against it. It shows that supports get S grades for seemingly unimpressive games while actually amazing ones go unrewarded.
"It happened once so this is the norm."
Also probably high likelihood that thresh killed and placed a lot of wards, and shielded bitches at good times (when the shield actually absorbs damage from enemy champions). Those are likely big factors in support grading.
