Generally we prefer to avoid making two of the same class in quick succession. In this case though we felt Kindred was an unusual case, since they're generally strongest in a position many marksmen players won't play. Kalista was the marksman before that, and she's got a playstyle that can be pretty love it or hate it too. We felt there was a good case for another marksman in the spot after Illaoi as a result, feeling there were a significant number of players who hadn't had a marksman that worked for them since Jinx.

As far as mages go we're with you though that, depending on what type of mage you like, it may have been a very long time since a new mage came out that fit your playstyle too (traditional caster types, rather than hybrids like Azir). We concluded getting a true caster mage into the lineup for 2016 was important as a result, and have one under development at the moment. Not appropriate to say anything about timeframe besides 'definitely this year' yet, working actively on filling the need for such a champ though.

I love your Lissandra please continue looking for her passive soon <3

I don't know about you guys but I really want a control mage in the same vain as Orianna and Syndra but, with a more primal or visceral twist to them so giving them melee AA's but with 3 out of their 4 abilitys focusing on the manipulation of whatever they are controlling. They are still a control mage after all. Also a Human from the Shadow Isles would work as a theme for the champ. On paper it sound very similar to Illaoi but primarily an AP user. With that added it then sounds like Ekko. The final aspect would be the deciding factor though. Whatever they are manipulating is fully under their control and will never take action without them. That's where Orianna and Syndra show their marks on the champ.

Azir

Not true Melee on basic attacks. Now visceral or primal. Not Shadow Isle themed. Also all of his abilities focus on his soldiers. Also there I just generally dislike Azir because of his ability to cheese lanning phase.

Please more Mages! Their my favorite type of champions. Syndra Zyra Lissandra Leblanc are my favorite Mages. The last "Mage" before Lissandra was Nami and Elise, but they doesn't really count. The Mage before that was Syndra. Please. We need more Mages.

May I suggest one that fights with their hair because that would be cool. :3

I think you forgot Vel'Koz.

And Bard

Kaipop2 votes

No, no one is forgetting Bard seeing as this thread is about AP mages that are primarily solo laners. Bard can be built as AP in support, but his solo laning phase in mid is abysmal vs competent opponents.

leblanc isnt a mage

Pimpinabox3 votes

Yes she is, she's an AP assassin which is a subcategory of the mage archetype.

Omg logged in to upvote this , I think thats what missing in this game , we have all kind of powers and elements , exept the Badass longHaired girl who fights with her hair , A perfect Mage !

Thryale1 votes

now, when you say "caster type" do you mean something support oriented like oriana/karma, poke based like Velkoz/xerath or burst focused like annie/(old)veigar?

Kaipop1 votes

Well first of all, Veigar is still a burst mage, and OP probably means any of those types of champions, they just don't want something weird like a right clicker mage such as Azir.

Thryale1 votes

yes and no. new veigar is much more of a poke mage now tbh.

As someone who mostly plays mages and jungle tanks I can honestly say champion releases have felt very underwhelming to me over the last two years. Even before that, in 2013 they weren't that great.

The last champ I fell in love with on release was Elise way back in 2012. Before Elise I often enjoyed new champion releases. Champions with kits I found fun were released with a fairly high frequency. I loved Syndra and Zyra especially.

So here's the question, where's the champions for people like me? People who don't want excessively complex champions like the ones who have been released since Vel'koz and Braum. It feels like you're overly catering to one portion of the community while completely ignoring another.

Even Jihn doesn't look like what I'm talking about to be honest. He's better than most recent champs but he's still actually very complex when compared to the likes of the champs I was mentioning. He has 4 passives for example.

I guess what I'm asking is if we can expect to see more champions who derive their power and interest from how their abilities interact rather than just quantity of abilities and passives or raw power in individual abilities.

Dessem3 votes

Agreed, I want to see more champions with Garen's level of complexity. A simple and straight-forward kit you understand at first glance, rather than reading the skills multiple times to get a complete fix on what the champion's about.

VoiDArchon3 votes

Malzahar is the true only mage, so make sure you don't fk up his kit with updates :) xD

MissMikasa4 votes

Mal is not the "true only mage." There are plenty others besides him.

Can you make Fiddle not shitty first?

Pimpinabox1 votes

Easy way to do that, let him move while siphoning during the duration of his ult.

PDE5 Inhibitors1 votes

Or revert some of the 10 nerfs they gave him before actually nerfing his problem area....but hey, that would only take common sense.

Yeah, it's just kind of disappointing that the only mid champion released in 2015 was Ekko. And he was only strongest as a tank in the jungle not even as a mid laner.

instead of making some BORING ADC(marksmen) who will eventually going to build the same item same concept , just make a champ that is capable of going any lane that they want . ( or atleast more than 2 roles) ex: Galio. Cho. Ali. etc... that way we have control over the game a bit. and there will be sense of unique in stead of the repetition.

Reworked Quinn & Poppy (and debately morde) can as well.

So I find this complaint odd.

please implement an ad jungler with an offensive ultimate. it's been too long and jungle is getting fleshed out random OP meta picks. its impossible to play a classical jungler without getting outclassed, its terrible

also champions released in 2012-2013 are far more interesting than champions released now. plz fix

Is there any chance we will see a new enchanter sort of champion like Janna or Nami?

AvatarRoku221 votes

In regards to the caster mage you have under development, what part of development are you at? Not asking about time frames (i know champs can take upwards of 7 months to over a year create) but im just curious what specific part of the development you are working on at the moment. Is it still in a brainstorming ideas phase or are there parts of the character already established (theme, kit, personality, story, etc)?

Canastus1 votes

Excuse me, but why have you avoided my question regarding one of your earlier statements all this time? What happened to those ideas you once had, are you going to simply abandon Cass for 5-6 more months?

Pimpinabox1 votes

3 Months later, where the fuck is your caster mage? I hope you didn't mean aurelion sol because he's boring as hell.

Ekko? Azir? Vel'koz?

Did you not like any of them? They're all mages with fairly different playstyles.

Ekko has engage like Lissandra if you liked diving. Azir has kiting and zone control if you preferred back line Lissandra. Vel'koz is a flying spaghetti monster with lasers, the definition of fun.

ekko is an assassin azir doesnt play like a mage and velkoz is the only one that counts as a mage but he just doesnt appeal to me his release was still 2 years ago even if i did like him

All the good ekko players play him more as a control mage that has some clean up potential.

Ye, they also played him as tank too. It doesn't matter. Ekko is created as an assassin.

Not every mobile mage is assassin. You don't have to kill squishies as Lissandra, it's not your response. If you can, okay do that, but you can also be useful without focusing to carries. But imagine it as Ekko, if you don't focus on carries, you're useless as fuck.

Lissandra is about crowd controling and creating an easier way to destory enemy. You make your team's mission easier. Ekko's CC is not his primary power.

It's like saying Syndra is an assassin. Focusing on squishies doesn't mean you're assassin. It means you have burst potential and focusing tankier targets suck.

Gets played as a 100-0 assassin very often. Notice how many of those kills his Q slow and W root didn't matter, just the damage.

She is a mobile mage, ofc she is going to deal a lot. Every mage can 100-0 any squishy champion. Nothing special on Lissandra. Ahri does it too but she is considered as mage (secondary assassin).

Lissandra can be secondary assassin at best.

Handin Out Naps1 votes

U mean a tank : ^).

RiotZenonTheStoic3 votes

I'll speak to that a little because I made one of them (Azir).

I think these three are all cool champions, but none of them satisfy the desire for a traditional mid-lane mage. Let's go through them:

Ekko: Ekko's a melee assassin. He does have one ability that feels like midlane mage (Q), but the rest of him is so positioning-reliant and he has to put his body on the line to get pay off so much, he really doesn't feel like a traditional mage.

Azir: One of the goals with Azir was specifically not to make a traditional mage. We wanted to make something new and halfway through we decided he might live somewhere between a mage and a marksman, and that's cool and unique, but again does not satisfy the desire for a new traditional mage.

Vel'Koz: Professor Eyebeam comes closest to traditional midlane mage in terms of his spells (they all feel VERY magey) and overall damage profile, but thanks to his passive and his generous base damages (and less than stellar scalings), he doesn't need to go mid and is perfectly happy as a support. The play pattern is right, but if the optimal position in the current meta isn't mid, it's not a traditional mid lane mage.

Wish us luck. Making an old-school champ is actually quite hard.

Retillin5 votes

I Ekko really an assassin? He just feels more like an AP fighter than anything.

LankPants3 votes

Wish us luck. Making an old-school champ is actually quite hard.

That's because you use Thresh as a gold standard for what a champ should be like. Take a step back and look at older champions and what makes their kits unique.

I think Syndra is one of the best examples of champion design in the game. You should take a look at what it is that makes her work.

Her abilities are individually very weak, amongst the weakest in the game. In a game mode where you could only skill one ability Syndra would be one of the weakest champs regardless of which one she skilled. Syndra's strength comes entirely from her combos and the interaction of her abilities. It gives her kit a sense of flow and levels of mastery that have been lacking in recent champions even though her kit is very simple when you break it down spell for spell.

The problem with your recent champions (at least as a traditional mage) is that you too much power into single spells now. Recent champs don't have a spell which individually does very little but which interacts with their other spells in such a way as to create more interesting gameplay for them like a Dark Sphere, Command: Attack or Rampant Growth because all their spells have so much power that doing so would absolutely break the champion.

If you want to design a good traditional mage you have to be willing to give them weak spells which interact with each other in order to create the champions gameplay. You have to be willing to give up the "Every spell is impactfull" philosophy that seems to have evolved since Thresh. I'd actually say Azir is one of the better 'recent' champs at this but as you said, the goal wasn't really to create a traditional mage.
