The climbing paradox

PhDs Nuts··4 votes·528 views

Since you must win to enter promos, it is essentially your first promo game:

If you have a 50% winrate between promo series and a 67% win rate in promos, you will always climb.

If you have a 67% winrate between promo series and a 50% win rate in promos, you will be stuck in the same division forever.

This is the dumbest thread of someone trying to sound smart I've seen in awhile

It's impossible to have a 50% w/l in promos because there's an odd number of games in the series. Go back to school

You always have to win one game to advance to promos. That's undebatable.
Odd number + 1 = even number. That makes the number of games you need to win to advance 4 and 6.

Solution: Make promos between divisions two games, and you win 1/2 to advance. Make promos between tiers four games, and you win 2/4 to advance. You will always have to win one game to reach promos, so you will still require >50% to climb (just not 67% which is ridiculously luck based).

If tiers must be artificially gated by a Bo5 (really 4/6) series, so be it, but I doubt it would be necessary. Matches are MMR based, not rank based, so matchmaking should be unaffected.

The promos are already 2/4 or 1/2 and that's with promo helper.

That doesn't exist above gold, but probably should to a certain point. Or just get rid of it and make promos 2 games/4 games. Same effect, you just don't need to fail promos the first time.

50% winrate doesn't imply WLWLWL, there will be some win streaks and loss streaks so you'd eventually pass promos. Heck, if you maintained a 67% winrate in regular games and a 10% winrate in promos, you'd still eventually pass promos.

And even if it did imply a WLWLWL... string, your mmr would steadily climb up in the 67% winrate part of the regular games, until eventually you just skipped the promo series, which is possible if your mmr is sufficiently high.

By contrast, if you maintain a 50% winrate in regular matches following an unrealistic WLWLWL string and 67% in promos, you'd climb for a little bit, but eventually you'd get stuck never actually hitting promo series since you'd get to the point where your MMR and rank 'match' so LP gains=LP losses.
