in an ideal world, soraka should be unplayable.

Zero escapes. Zero mobility. Squishy as hell. No threatening offensive spells at all (Q is mildly irritating at best).

Most champions should be able to blow her up fairly quickly with only an item or two. Some champions should be able to one-shot her by 10 minutes.

She has nearly zero self peel - besides a rather miniscule slow effect that's almost completely negated by item 3009 , and a completely unreliable root)

This champion should be a walking meme. She should have the lowest win rate of any champion in the entire game.

But then you add in the human condition.

The human condition that somehow defies logic and says "We should target this dangerous carry standing next to the soraka instead of the soraka."

The human condition that somehow defies logic and says "We should focus down the front line so we can access the back line." - while soraka keeps those tanks nice and fat n' happy.

The human condition that somehow defies logic and says "That varus is really low, easy kill, easy game." - while Soraka keeps him nice and comfy at 20% health while he shreds your entire team.

And so Soraka lives, and continues to be a playable champion - based solely on the fact that people are stupid and don't realize that with 2-3 extra auto attacks from ONE of their FIVE champions, Soraka melts and stops healing her team through literally all of your damage output.

Soraka lives, and continues to be a generic medic champion, even though a single item 3123 on your team cuts her impact on the game by 40%. But nobody buys this item.

Every day, people around the country... around the WORLD get frustrated by a champion that is literally a sitting duck heal-bot. All because they couldn't take the time to get rid of her in a fight, or focus her down first in a lane.

This champion's viability is literally centered around the fact that people somehow subconsciously decide she is a non-factor. She's of no threat, so just ignore her. I'm guilty of it myself. So are you. We all are - or she wouldn't exist. At the very least she'd have a .00002% win rate.

One of the great unexplained phenomena that could only exist in this game (or games like it, to champions like soraka).

Which is why Soraka is my third favorite support. The only time anyone kills me is if I'm completely alone, in the dark, in the enemy jungle, and they just happened to bump into me while I'm doing god knows what.

Team fights? It's like I'm invisible to them. Here come 'dem healz bois' and locket and redemption and all this other cool stuff I got. Even after I've spammed W like 30 times and I'm at 10 HP nobody wants to dive me.

Soraka is the new Teemo global passive meme. Except hers isn't a taunt. It's invisibility.

I have experienced similar things, where I'm literally walking through a 5v5 team fight with 20hp left, and nobody is making any effort at all to kill me. The only way I die is a stray Luden's proc or shiv proc.

I've had MANY games like this.

Welcome to why (as an offhand example) Mercy in Overwatch got gutted every other patch during the early part of the game's life. Whenever someone encounters Mercy and her healing target, they consistently go for the healing target rather than Mercy, then run to the forum and throw a childish tantrum when they get their ass shredded in a 1v2.

Same thing applies to healing champions in League. It's half the reason healing champions are kept in garbage tier, with the other half being because Riot refuses to pull their head out of their collective ass and realize how simple and easy it is to balance healing. They came so damn close with Soraka's rework, but ultimately whiffed and then proceeded to dumpster her with gutting nerfs every time she sees the light of day.

Healing needs two things to be balanced:

  1. It needs to have an actual, significant, and non-replenishable cost. Soraka's heal costing a percentage of her own health in addition to the mana cost is a good example of this, although Riot whiffed by making the health and mana costs both so tiny and irrelevant.
  • Clarification: Replenishment via investment is fine, as that is natural progression. Soraka buying Warmogs+other health items and getting infinite health to heal with is fine, because she spent a metric fuckton of gold for it.
  1. It needs to not be infinitely sustainable on a single target, so long as the cost can be paid. Battlerite is a great example of this. When a champion in that game takes damage and is healed, some amount of health goes dark and can no longer be restored via healing. This stacks with no limit or diminishing return, which makes every bit of harassment damage actually matter.

Wait just a gosh darn minute, are you trying to tell me people shouldn't be able to be healed through MULTIPLE rotations of spells at virtually no cost to the healer??

Get right outta town.

{quoted} although Riot whiffed by making the health and mana costs both so tiny and irrelevant.

Only 10% of her hp. So if she had 10k HP, she would take 1k away. So little mang.

Soraka's self peel is her E, a very strong CC spell; Q has a slow so it can be used to delay enemy chase; she also gets bonus MS if there is a wounded ally nearby, which can be useful for escape from ganks given there is a good chance that there's a wounded ally nearby if you're chased; for desperate measures she can also use R to heal herself.
