Although it is different than how he used to be (I got mastery 7 on the old Aatrox so I'm going to act a bit pretentious when speaking about him, sorry), it's a step in the right direction.
The way things are going, he will either be reworked in a class update or a champion VGU. Since the next class update is already decided and will be coming out most likely in patch 7.10 (7.9 it will probably be tested on the PBE so whichever patch you prefer) and since there is about a 6 month wait time (last class update was preseason, patch 6.23) in between class updates, it will be awhile, an that's assuming that the next class update will include him, witch it may very well not.
Alternatively, he could get a rework. However, the time in between champion VGU's is about 5 months, going from the time in-between Yorick (6.18) and Galio (7.6). FURTHER HOWEVER is that the next two champion VGU's are already decided (Urgot next, then Evelyn) and the VGU take approximately 9-11 months to finish (Riot has stated this before, plus it's been rather consistent). Since work on VGU's only begins after one is complete, your looking at, at the very least, 14 months (based purely on the number given, not including any other factors) for his VGU to release, and that's only if they decide to give him a VGU next after Urgot.
The most likely thing is that it would be a class update since visually, his model it rather decent, his VO is alright and his lore is not out-dated, only his kit is on the bad side.
TLDR; Aatrox won't be changed (fixed) for about half a year at best
About his mini rework now. Although he is generally weaker and less exciting to play, he now has a distinct "FIGHT" mode, which makes him much easier to patch, alter and control in general. Yea, I loved the old Aatrox, and it kinda sucks that I have to play differently now, but he was very "feast of famine". Now, he has a lot more options for when he falls behind, and although he's become about as good in the jungle as Azir, the newest changes to him on the PBE should fix that, and make him viable again. To put it simply, the changes weren't the greatest for him, but it brought attention to a forgotten champion and it made him easier to buff/nerf without gutting him or turning him into an instaban. The reason why the old Aatrox was never getting any changes was because the slightest change could gravely or greatly affect him. It may put a bitter taste in your mouth, but the mini-rework was the best thing for him.
