Just had a guy carry us with Urgot so clearly he is strong. Why is he not more popular ?

I think most people just find him boring to play.

It's incredibly rare for Urgot to actually do well in a game. He can be strong if he gets ahead, but his oppressively high mana costs make that next to impossible. There was a time when Urgot was top tier, but nerf after nerf put him into the ground, where he will remain until Riot reworks him.

Because he's an adc that does non-adc things. So neither the tanky bruiser players nor the adc players can get a good feel for the guy. He's sorta this awkward hybrid champ that requires you to have a decent working knowledge and mechanic aptitude of 3 roles.

Howdy! I peaked at Plat II last season, before falling due to decay / playing drunk and depressed, and I mained Kindred and Urgot.

Urgot's not very strong, unfortunately, and that's a lot of why he isn't played.

To be precise as to why:

His early game is garbage. [Until you get a Tear, you cannot sustain your mana costs, and are dependent upon farming with Q. This means you will automatically lose any trade early on.]

He has a hard time fitting into team compositions. [Running him as Bottom means you give up more reliable sustained damage. He doesn't auto-attack very often, and if he misses his E, he might as well not be in the fight. Running him Top means you give up the chance for a much stronger frontline or splitpush champion. Running him Jungle means you give up a stronger frontline or splitpush champion, and his clear and ganks are not particularly good, though are not awful, either. Running him Middle means you give up AoE damage / waveclear, magic damage, and/or an assassin, and running him as Support denies him the gold he needs to function, though he can actually do pretty well using his ultimate + shield to peel for ADC, and his E/Q for harass in lane / shredding tanks later on.

His ultimate is extremely difficult to utilize well. [You can use it to initiate a fight or to wombo combo with the fear, but this often means that Urgot dies in the process. You can use it to survive some burst damage, but you are still too squishy for that to mean all that much, which often renders it a moot point or a dead ability. ]

And, finally, his late game is decent at best. [Though he can quickly decimate a number of squishy champions, and even many tanks with some effort, his damage comes out slow enough that the enemy Zhonya's / Seraph's / QSS / Exhaust / Heal etc. deny him from dealing fatal damage, which often leads to his target just returning into the fight whilst he is harmlessly waiting on his cooldowns.]

I consider Urgot a viable Top-Laner (and always cry when someone picks him somewhere else). He has his problems but he can go even with most Tops in terms of Laning and Teamutility.

Especially 'scary' tops like Riven and Renek can be be kept in check easily if the Urgot-Player knows what he's doing.
