Supports and ranks after the game

Hello everyone!

First of all - excuse for ranting, but i feel kinda salty right now.

I would like to ask and suppose something. What are performance ranks after the game based on? Are they based simply on damage dealt and killing blows earned? I just got a game with Karma support, i maxed her shield. Had a pretty nice game overall. Finished with 2-2-21 KDA, saved my allies multiple times with the shield, used it to engage fight. In a 28 minute game i placed 23 green and 4 pink wards (I am currently unranked, silver 2 last year, so do not be too harsh on my ward numbers, still was twice as many as the next person in the game) Sure, i was last in my team by gold, damage and kills, but i was a support - my role was to place my teammates in a position, that they could carry me. And, may i say, i think i achieved that. I saved them multiple times in fights, spotted sneaking enemies with wards, helped engages with the AOE movement speed and shields. The result - A- rank. I mean - i am not a good player, by any means, and my rank last season showed that. However i did my job in this game. So - normally I would not care about ranks, but only a S rank gives you them boxes. If i want these S ranks as a support - what am i supposed to do? Max my damage spells, instead of utility ones, steal finishing blows from my carries, spend my gold on damage items, instead of on wards? I have had games with Zyra, playing her full AP, doing exactly that, and - you guessed it folks - S ranks. Personally i do not care too much about skins and chest. I still got the ultimate award - earning another victory, but still - feels bad man.

Tl DR: That end game rank system, IMO, forces more and more people away from the support role. As long as doing actual support job contributes nothing to the rank, that brings the chests.

Sorry for ranting, as I said - I feel pretty salty right now. It was just my cents how to make the support role slightly more attractive. And before you all top, jungler, mid and ADC mains downvote remember - more supports mean shorted queue times.

Thank you for taking time to read and answer. Have a wonderful day!

Got an S+ with Sona (10/6/21) last night even though it was my worst game ever when it came to warding. Outdamaged everyone on my team.

Still lost. ^_^

Another way to show that ranks for supports are a nonsense

They're based on your percentile performance relative to all other players using the same champion in the same role. Lots of things are considered, not just kda, although riot doesn't want to give the exact criteria for fear of people trying to game the system, but stuff like warding matters too.

That means players have to do that particular champ/role combo well, and what that entails is going to vary. For the bulk of supports, that means taking kills/doing a lot of damage/taking cs isn't actually going to help you get a good grade relatively speaking. For some pokey supports that work via kill pressure it can mean that kills/damage are a bigger deal, but it really varies.

It can be frustrating sometimes when you feel like you have an amazing game and only get an A, and it's fairly common for people to complain that supports have it worse since they're underleveled and gold starved compared to carry roles, or that their particular champ is more suited to other things, but that's just a misunderstanding of the grading system. Since it is a percentile system, and it's role/champ specific, if you get a non-S grade, it just means that other players really did manage to do it better on that same champ in that same role. It can be a little crazy what the top performances are like on some champ/role combos, where you can have the best game of your life and 'only' get an A+, but you can usually imagine a world where someone did better (e.g. perfect KDA, or even more kills where whoever really ran away with the game, or so on).

Last week I played as nami geting an S- ending 4/5/19 in a 45 vs 20 kills. All kills I have were in teamfights using the R and Q abilities (not in purpose)
