Ryze feels so underwhelming right now
Hiya Riot, I'm a former Ryze main who gave up on him after the changes came out. Needless to say, I was very shocked after the changes actually came out, due to a few reasons:
First of all, I very clearly remember reading a post by a Rioter stating that Ryze is "supposed to be machine-gunning out spells, as that is his identity," then wouldn't this change completely destroy that identity? What is Ryze supposed to be right now? A combo mage? He barely has any combo left for him to be called that. A ranged assassin mage like he previously was? You can't kill anyone with two spell rotations, so that's not the correct identity either. An underwhelming mage is surely the only title worthy of describing Ryze in his current state, considering he has lost so many of his previous strengths. He can not duel properly anymore, and just about every champion can jump on him and stomp him after he has done his combo, only a shadow of its former self. Even in teamfights he's useless, having to walk away after two spell rotations "Welp, this is the extent of my usefulness, cya team."
Second of all, and this was probably the most confusing thing to me, this change only is a kick in the shins for the people who have mastered Ryze. People who never even knew how to do his combo, the ones who played him because "muh OP Faker champ" wouldn't even be phased by it. Is the problem at hand that Riot can't create a high skillcap champion? Right now, he feels underwhelming no matter who plays him, because the capabilities of a Ryze main have been set back by the changes so much that doing the proper combo barely matters, they have been placed in a position where they are pretty much forced to play like someone who barely knows the champion.
I will admit that previously, Ryze was very powerful, simply broken even, in the hands of a master compared to those of the newb. However, to compensate for that by giving Ryze what is possibly the biggest nerf in nerfing history baffles me. The last time a very powerful champion who was too good at too many things got nerfed, she got compensated with an MS buff on her Q. Is the Ryze fanbase too small for you to care, maybe?
I am very sorry if this post contains traces of sodium chloride beyond the prescribed dose, I am simply sad that this is the way my most reliable champion was treated, a truly unique concept where the beginners could only show a fraction of the capabilities of the masters. I hope to see changes that are bound by skill level, not just raw stats.
