have junglers forgotten how to smite right?

This is not meant to insult any of you proud junglers out there, but recently, I noticed how many games turned 180° because the jungler didn't smite baron/elder dragon at the right time. You should think the higher elo you get, the less often it happens. I'm in high plat atm, playing with diamond 5 - 3, and it's frightening how many junglers in my team, but also in the enemy team lost the game for their team by smiting wrong. I had 2 games the past games where it was especially odd. In one of these games, my jungler smited at 1.5k baron hp and made it possible for the enemy jungler to just chill before smiting, because the baron still had 700 hp. The other game, the enemy jungler smited a bit too early and my jungler got the baron. Getting baron stolen usually doesn't necessarily means losing the game, but in each of these games, the team that lost baron was leading and the baron steal turned the game around heavily. If you're a jungler and this happened to you often too, do you know why? Like are you scared of missing smite so you rather use it too early than too late? Or is it just pretty unlucky? But why does it happen so often then.. I would like to know.

If the enemy jungler is in the pit, then both have fairly even odds of smiting it (with the exception of stuff like Feast+Smite or Consume+Smite or [execute]+Smite)

If people stop hitting the objective (to turn and fight or focus down the enemy jungler) when it is low, you can easily misjudge the timing when trying to avoid the enemy smite-stealing it.

This is especially true if the enemy jungler out-levels yours since they have a stronger smite.

oh well yeah that explains it a bit.

It's still really humiliating when you smite to early and a Janna tornado steals Baron. :( Try as we might, it's not always easy to Smite right.

didn't that happen like ages ago?

It happened to me twice in three days when I started out (Late November?) and was learning the roles. Once from a Janna Q, and another from a Soraka Q over the wall. Weren't as hilarious as the vidoes of them out there, but still humiliating all the same. It's actually what pushed me into being a Support Main. I realized I wasn't ready for the Jungle yet.

The roles differ somewhat, but I've found it fairly easy to transition from Jungle to Support.

Both roles are oriented around map-pressure (ganking lanes, controlling objectives), vision control and assisting your allies across the map.

Honestly, I think I've been having an easier time carrying as a support than I had been in the jungle. Not having an autofilled support on the team does wonders for morale and competency.

I really enjoy Support even if it is a mostly thankless job. I like keeping high traffic areas lit up and spotting incoming ganks, ect. About the best rush I get is saving my ADC with a good peel or a well placed exhaust. Maybe here soon I'll give the Jungle another shot, but I still have Support Champs I'm saving up for. ^_^

Warwick and Amumu won't get me very far, I'm afraid.

If you are looking for junglers to play in low-ELO, I'd probably recommend trying Amumu, Volibear and Xin Zhao. While they aren't the strongest picks in the role, they work rather well in lower tiers of play due to their durability, damage and ease-of-use.

For the jungle role, I have a set of pre-written tips which I tend to provide for players who want advice. If you want them, let me know.

For support, I've found decent success rushing Zz'rot Portal after Sightstone. It provides great stats (resistances, regeneration), functions as a gold-generation item and keeps a lane pushed out (leaving an ally free to group).

Contrary to my expectations, I've found myself receiving thanks in multiple games as support. Currently, I'm attributing it to my previous experience as a jungler resulting in my roaming to skirmishes, deep-warding the enemy jungle, contesting objectives and ganking lanes with (and without) my jungler.

Lee also has a bit more flexibility with smite because he can Q onto baron, then smite and second Q at the same time giving a smite+execute instantly so the HP range he can smite at is higher than others who dont have executes on top of smite

Also, Elder Dragon heals while you are fighting it. If the monster just barely drops below your smite's damage but heals before you manage to cast the ability, it can easily live with less than 50HP.

I just stole the elder dragon from a lee sin using Taliyah LOL It was so sad for him. the dragon had 1k hp I used my W to knock him back, he couldn't smite right and I got it. It actually won us the game too.

I don't main jungle(third best role), but when you're in that pit, its chaotic, you have to worry about not dying, because your being focused, all while fighting the enemy who is in the pit with you and smiting at the right time. And with smiting you cant just wait till it gets to 1000 and click, because there's another person waiting with 1000 true damage in there with you. You have to wait till it gets close to 1000 to effectively smite, then guess the moment it will hit 1000 or below and smite, because if you wait there's another chance it will be taken or you will die.

tl;dr Theres a lot of pressure in that pit for you to smite

Pressure. Most in any Elo know when to smite. The difference between the low and high Elo smites is in judging how much damage is being done to the objective and judging when to smite off of that, rather than just reactionary smiting that most of us low Elo junglers do, myself included. The bit too early ones are often just nerves, the enemy is closing in and you don't want them to get it, so you end up getting an itchy trigger finger and going just slightly too early.

It could be autofill.

You watch LCS games right? It happens even there! To my personal shame and bitter sadness... I had a game maybe like 30-40 games ago where I missed the baron smite 3 FUCKING TIMES FOR 3 ENEMY STEALS AND THREW THE GAME EACH TIME!!! Now that is some bad smiting/luck....

I've also stolen baron with a support morg tormented soil :) And you see the shit on Youtube... people stealing it with a lucky Janna tornado etc.. Smiting just at the right time is nerve wrecking and you know it shows if people miss it relatively often even in pro play, it is not so easy as it would seem.

Oh that is sad

I guess since the higher Elo you go the better people are at stealing and the lower you are the worse they are at stealing?

Late game baron takes damage very quickly, so if another jungler is in the pit, you have to guess when the baron will hit below smite HP. If you smite it after you SEE the HP, there is a good chance it is too late. And with everyone spamming abilities damage is not exactly predictable, so yes, smiting early happens even without an error.

If enemy jungler is NOT around, and no enemies with high damage abilities are (a bunch of ults do damage similar to smite), then it is correct to smite a bit later, so chance of miss is smaller, but you often still have to anticipate and smite a bit before you see the actual number.

I'd venture a guess that early dragon mis-smites happen less often (assuming enemy jungler is not around to steal), since damage is slower and more predictable. Of course mistakes happen all the time, but even without them, early baron smites will happen. After all, of the 2 junglers only one can get it.

If they play on locked camera and are in front of the baron, the health bar is off screen.

Low diamond it is always best to have someone zone the enemy jungler or you have a 50/50 shot at best.
