Do not build Abyssal Mask or Sunfire on Cho'Gath

PSA: Don't build Sunfire Cape or new Abyssal Mask on Cho'Gath! * r/leagueoflegends

https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/86gdd2/psa_dont_build_sunfire_cape_or_new_abyssal_mask/

Credit goes to /u/b0n3rdrag0n for pointing this out. Apparently when Cho gets enough stacks he gets too large to apply either aura because of his auto attack range increase.

This is a shame because abyssal mask really synergizes well with his vorpal spikes.

While my suggestion does nothing for item 3068 , I think they should've left the aura range on item 3001 but make the magic damage amp for allies only. That was the purpose/design of the item after all, to buff your allies, and it would be ineffective as a midlaner purchase.

They should make the aura ranges based off champion model size. That really sucks for Chogath

Azadethe2 votes

The original purpose was actually to enhance self casting mages. Remember: Abyssal Staff was a core option for champs like Katarina or Diana

It seems like they are trying to flip around its usefulness to a purely tank item that only Amumu Rammus can use properly out of all the champs in the roster. The rest.... you get out of their skill ranges too fast for Abyssal to be useful. Even Katarina can't really use it now, because her R has a much larger range than Abyssal does.

This seems like their attempt to get people to use item 3027 which they've also nerfed into the ground.

Even Ornn can't use the current item 3001 , which is going to nerf him even more..... Dunno why they hate Ornn.

item 3001 came from the Tank update last mid season, where they also introduced item 3193 item 3194 . It was designed to be a tank item for tanks, who want to give utility to their allies. That was also kinda the point of taking it away from mages, every non-artillery mage used to buy Abyssal Scepter because it was too good in both offense & defense. AP, MR plus increased dmg % (or reducing enemy MR = mPen) = even more dmg.

Actually even before the Abyssal nerf, item 3027 was outperforming Abyssal even when vs magic damage-heavy comps.

Azadethe3 votes

Rod of Ages has not been outperforming anything since Season 5. There's a very real reason almost no no champions get it:

  • Least stat effective offensive AP item in the game
  • Removal of early game agency in mana control, damage, and Cooldown
  • Reduction of 20 AP, 100 HP, 100 Mana

Supports don't build RoA, because there are at least 7 more gold efficient and actually support items.

Mids don't build it because their options were Morellonomicon or item 3003 (Now especially) or item 3285 Even as a second or third tier item, it simply doesn't get bought, because the followups are item 3100 item 3151 item 3001 item 3135 item 3116 item 3102 item 3152 item 3089 item 3157

**Also, we entered the assassin meta, which pretty much made scaling and capped HP items a really bad choice. A no Armor Mage = any AD assassin or adc does amplified damage to you, and can often 1 shot you. No Resist builds = counters like Fizz are guaranteed domination because you have no item mobility. Furthermore, each assassin item has CDR ......

**

In addition, adcs were given item 3036 which made making an HP mage hazardous to your health in EVERY game.

Basically...... item 3027 became a garbage item in every single example, except vs Tanks ...... which wait for it..... do % damage (which means it also sucked vs them).

item 3027 basically became an ARAM item, and only because they removed support items.

Not having any resistances puts you closer to true damage, which is worse than giving your opponents %HP dmg. Having only 1 resistance type makes you vulnerable to the other. HP is valuable vs all, including True Dmg.

Riot removed almost all auras for a reason...

We're currently working on an under the hood thing to allow us to be able to account for hitboxes in cases like this in particular. Not sure if that will get into 8.7, but hoping so.

M00ndanc31 votes

sweet! I can go back to being satisfied with chilling smite/ cinderhulk support chogath

Sp33d Zer05 votes

Just set it back to edge to edge. At 350 range even edge to edge is fine for the range, but if you are concerned lower to 300/325.

Z3Sleeper2 votes

I'm sure they know that, I think he's saying they're trying to figure out how to do it from a coding standpoint.

Sp33d Zer03 votes

Well it was coded edge to edge before.

Seeing as how chogaths hitbox grows edge to edge already applies to his size increase.

Z3Sleeper1 votes

Well then his statement makes 0 sense if that's the case.

Edit: Nevermind see Rito response.

RiotRiotRepertoir8 votes

Yes, it's a coding thing. It wasn't edge to edge before. It was center of user to edge of enemy. It just didn't really matter because the size was bigger.

ShadowtehGreat1 votes

If you extend the flat radius from the champions edge outwards, the over all effective area covered would be proportionally larger on large hit box champions like Sejuani and Chogath than it would be on champions with a smaller hit box. Not sure if that would be intended or something not considered much of an issue.

Auroramancer3 votes

Just make these aura AoEs edge-to-edge instead of center-to-center or center-to-edge...

Profirix1 votes

Thank you for addressing this. It really was a shame when I found out that Abyssal Mask was useless on late game Cho'Gath.

Quick question, who is the lead gameplay designer on Irelia's VGU? I'm looking for a place to leave feedback.

BobaFlautist10 votes

That's what happens when you measure center to center instead of edge to edge.

Funnily enough, this also means it's really hard to use sunfire and abyssal against him.

Leona : Face the power of the sun! 300-stack-Chogath : The what now?

DeusVult1 votes

Which is why sunfire, bami cinder, cinderhulk and Mask's AoE should be measured from the edge of a champs model outwards, because other than Kayne/Tahm Kench no one is ever going to be inside another champion.

Measuring from the outside would allow larger tanks to get effective use out of these items

Techhead01 votes

Too bad that, according to patch notes, it's actually center-to-edge.

Silverjust8 votes

If they want this items to be mainly built on tanks, they should make the radius scale with size, because tanks are generally larger than other champs

Kivolan4 votes

Pfft Electrocute full AP Cho'gath is the way to go in this shitty meta. Assassins can't 100-0 him due to his high health pool, but guess what... Cho can 100-0 you :D

ps this reply was mainly sarcasm, Cho is better built as a tank in 70% of games. There are only a few matchups I go full AP in

Profirix2 votes

Full AP Cho is actually really freaking fun.

Häxel2 votes

you also can 100-0 with full health build and item 3193 cause chos healthscalings plus you have real tankyness so no real reason to build any ap. I would be happy if cho players wer emore forced to build at least item 3027 for damage similar to galio.

Automated Riven1 votes

Not anymore you can't

Ok sure but why4 votes

Oh well Chogath item 3091

Saezio4 votes

Revert the changes and make it melee only item. It is A OKAY to make sterak and hydras not usable to adc but mages are untouchable? The item was unhealthy on ryze/cassio because it made them skip the early weak lane phase but why should the rest suffer?

Wild Geese3 votes

Speaking of which, is there any hard data on the various champion collision sizes out the? I haven't had any luck finding them.

woodvsmurph2 votes

The hitbox for those items has been adjusted in the past - and probably will again - to adjust for his changing hitbox size.

I Main Swain2 votes

this is why it annoyed me that they made them from the center of a champion

To be frank, I don't think typical mages should have access to a tank item like Abyssal Mask. It was supposed to be a tank item that benefits team mages. Cass was a huge abuser of that item, so was Aurelion Sol (though, I think Aurelion Sol is significantly weaker without proper HP mage items now).

They reworked it into a tank item and frankly it doesn't even resemble a tank item. It's basically Rod of Ages without the AP on it, its got MR instead and a magic damage amp. Sure tanks find that desirable but so do mages.

And that last nonsense change is going to keep tanks from even wanting the thing. Most tanks have moves longer than 325 range.

Except most abilities that matter for tanks have ranges that are within it. Also, even if they are ranged abilities 90% of the time the tank is going to be melee. Yes, Ornn ult won't benefit from it, but his W and passive will (unless someone else procs the brittle). Yes, Maokai saplings probably won't benefit from it, but Q,W, and SOMETIMES R will all benefit from it. More examples could be stuff like Amumu who won't benefit from Bandage and max range ulti, but W,E, and his Liandry's damage will all GENERALLY benefit from it.

At least half of Ornn W goes outside of that tiny range lul

His hitbox takes up like half of it, his W is about a ranged carries auto range. 325 is basically nothing. Amumu is one of the few tanks who actually had most of his damage boosted by it after that nerf.

yeah it sucks but what is fun is when you get enough stacks and you can aa over walls.

Tried to get this worked out a year ago already. Riot doesn't give a shit.

rtbf2256182411 votes

In that case, these items should be downright disabled for Cho or they should just fix it so the aura expands with his size.

The latter obviously seems like a better idea.

Jungle Lux God1 votes

It's not useless on Cho'gath, it's just a hard counter to Fizz and other champions that can conditionally move through units :).

i thought of Abyssal mask as a damage item for tanks that, while dealing magic damage, don't actually have any good Ap scalings such as Ornn , non-full Ap Rammus and Yorick (maiden and E deal magic damage), Sejuani and Shen, now i think it's moreso but less effective for most of them Ornn can't use it with his R and possibly W, Rammus can't get full damage of his ult or W Reflections, both of Yorick 's magic damage sources are unlikely to be affected as his E is mostly used for gapclosing, Sejuani's still kinda working and Shen is Probably the best one getting out of these changes.

Curious to find out it's supposed to be a support-ish item according to most of the people here.
