So with all Riot's talk about disliking 'passive' play...

...why does Janna get to sit at a 26%+ pick rate and 53%+ win rate?

If any other support were anywhere close to that they'd get gutted and slated for a mini-rework 6 months later lol

Literally all she does is deny play, and Riot has expressed their dislike for that style of play. Why is she an exception?

That's not "passive play", "passive play" means she is only there to serve as a shield bot, and nothing else.

How they see Janna is more of "actively denying plays". And yes, there are plenty of ways to deal with that "actively" denying plays.

Hope that answers your question.

that's not true, thresh was the most popular support for years and he never got gutted

Actually, he took several large hits. In addition, he never hit the playrate of Janna, and he's never come close to her winrate.

Thresh was the most picked support for years. Yeah, he never had a high winrate, but his pickrate was higher than Janna's.

???? Lulu all of her dmg nerfs have literally reduced her to only doing this

Also, good Jannas are totally capable of enabling plays:

  1. Land fully charged nado on enemy ADC/Support
  2. Ally ADC gets free dmg on them while they can't do anything
  3. Shield ally adc so enemy can't try to trade back
  4. Slow/knockup enemy adc again as they try to retreat and get ally adc free kill

Not at all passive.

Oh you mean soraka?

Your guess is as good as mine. She should be getting as much hate as Thresh when he was popular.

The difference is that thresh was being picked because he made it to where picking any other support was mostly pointless. he was a jack of all trades that also was a master of them all.

Janna is simply a master of peel. and a very good one and peel is always appreciated, but she sacrifices pretty much everything else for it. That said, let us not pretend she hasn't been getting hits and nerfs over the course of the season.

In general tho, the reason she is in such a good spot atm is because of the prevalence of Jhin, who she synergizes extremely well with.

because she counters melee champs

Okay now give us a completely safe ranged counter.

Fair's fair, right?

Oh wait, except he'd be gutted and reworked because he'd be frustrating for those poor ranged ADC mains.

Look how much play Poppy is now seeing. She denies any type of engage (except a few).

I may not like it, but having a few champions in 140 to deny entry, I am perfectly down with that.

WoonStruck1 votes

Denying engage is fine.

Denying it via two of the most powerful disengage tools in the game? 'Okay', I guess.

Also providing one of the best shields in the game and being one of the best kite-assists out of any other champion that has been or ever will be released?

Yeah, something's a bit overboard there.

Karma shield, way better and applies to 5 people, along with a speedup, massive poke and a snare.

Janna has her nado and Ult for dissengage, blowing the ult means no heals unto her allies. Other than that, her shielf, and slow.

Janna's kit is unique. She is very easy to get onto to kill her if you flank her, making her waste her ult to stay alive.

Karma's shield doesn't grant AD, and applying it to 5 people with a higher base+ratio takes a 30 second CD.

A snare that's short-ranged, meaning active, risky play, and poke meaning active play, not passive. Not only that, but its practically unanimously agreed that Karma is over-tuned now.

Trying to use an OP champion to prove that another isn't a good example of Riot's game direction is faulty in itself.

The Shield AD dies with the shield, which is very easy to do. Janna is good at peel, but is almost the only thing she is really good at. She sacrifices a lot to do what she does so well.

It's cause she's a support that lives or dies on whether her team can use her. Let's be quite frank, the reason Janna passive play isn't concerning is simply because she does no damage.

Let me be clear, she can set up plays and deny aggressive plays but ultimately the only 1v1s she will win is if she starts the fight with a massive health advantage. All the other supports have decent damage somewhere in their kits so as to not be completely screwed when solo but Janna is the exception. She's allow to play passive because she quite literally has no other option

She can't kill solo, but she can't die also.

Janna thrives against morons. Solo Q is filled to the brim with morons. Therefore, Janna thrives in Solo Q. Jinx dominates Solo Q for the same reason. Any champion designed to heavily punish sloppiness will naturally do well in Solo Q. Janna is merely their queen.
