Season 8: The Death of Vision

KING XXXI··91 votes·19,780 views

Vision has been nerfed to oblivion this season. Ward durations are decreased, cooldowns are increased, pink ward is replaced by control ward (which is USELESS if you're behind and oppressive when you're ahead), and why do I have to wait 10 minutes to get Sightstone?

You're really pushing it, but I guess you just want every champion to one shot you from fog of war because we have this one useless piece of shit ward that we can only use every 5 minutes and lasts for virtually no time.

I'm fine with damage being as high as it is but PLEASE give us our vision back.

Death of vision was in S6 already, now it's desecration of the corpse...

Most of the things OP is saying are bad about Vision happened back then. Hell, I stopped playing back when control wards were just becoming a thing. That was S6.

This is not going to work while you still have champs that at level 6 can delete opponents at will. There's no counter play against FOTM champs apart from cowering behind towers and hoping they are dumb enough to dive them... and even then its pointless half the time.

Yet again this will hurt the immobile squishies and buff the hyper-mobile carries.

They reduced the amount of Control wards you can carry by 1 (Down from 3) and Trinket Ward duration has been reduced by 60 seconds (Wards last 2 minutes instead of 3 minutes).

What this is going to do is encourage people to actually play safe & not be as reckless. Junglers will benefit off this as lanes won't be warded as much, meaning they can gank more frequently. Completing the Support quests should be the supports top priority in Botlane (if it wasn't a top priority already) as it gives them the ability to provide more vision on the map. People are also even more prone to "getting caught out" mid-late game as Trinket wards won't last as long & you'll have to rely on the Control Wards & your Support for vision on the map.

they did that in season 6, i think. You couldn't place more than 1 pinkward, but you could buy 3 - 5.

Think about the implications of this though.

If laners are playing safer due to lack of vision, are junglers really going to benefit?

And do we really want junglers sitting in bushes 24x7, forcing playstyles where both the enemies sit wayyy back and hatch eggs until the jungler shows his face somewhere on the minimap?

Supports being able to show skill expression by warding is nice, but I feel they can already do that very well. Nerfing trinkets won't help differentiate a good support from a bad one, more than the current system already does.

Minions go back and forth into each other turrets so no laners can at the same time play under their turrets. With no vision, it does benefit the one who manage the wave the best (freeze and break the freeze) and who has the champion that can control the waves the best. It'll benefit junglers heavily as there'll be less ward to spot where the enemy jungler is before they gank a lane.

I'm maining jungle next season and camping toplane. No vision with how hard top snowballs means easy games.

Well, this is certainly going to make it easier to get caught out, but ask yourself: is that going to affect playstyle, or is it going to affect champion viability?

Consider the scuttle changes. It seriously hampered junglers who could not contest river 100% of the time. Do you think the inability to face check bushes might also hamper certain roles?

How SKT wins without reliable engage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeevhumAE-M

With damage and CC being through the roof, and vision being low, do you foresee a world where these team comps, and this gameplay, ever exists again? How many statements follow "After seeing __ with a ward" Who knows if the game is actually better or worse depending, but it should be regarded with some value.

In any RTS, scouting is one of the highest focal points of managing your combat resources. There's the macro, resource generating aspect, the micro unit management scale when you are in combat, but between those two points, you need to be able to find ways to put it to use. If you can't gather information without losing the game, the game straight devolves into "omg jg difference, win lane win game"

It's one thing to say "back when supports only bought inventories full of wards and were oracle bots" it was boring, but how is this not counter-boring? There is no tactics or outwitting somebody sitting on control wards, if they are more powerful than you and baron is up, you've lost the game.

THEY SAY IT DONT BE LIKE THAT BUT IT DO

No, junglers won't benefit from this. This means that jungle babysitting instead of actually jungling will be even more mandatory than it already is, and it further pushes out jungle champs that aren't hyper aggressive. I queued jungle so that I could jungle, not clear 2 camps and then pitch a tent in a lane with my Hunter's Machete.

Automated Riven1 votes

That is helping the jungle. If junglers are able to pitch a tent then the better jungle wins the game.

The nerf to vision is so extreme and unnecessary.

As a support main I really hated the whole quest aspect when I could always buy a Sightstone very early and keep us protected bot lane. Making us wait 10 minutes made a huge difference and contributed to how unforgiving bot lane is.

ADCs are always hyper focused on farming and trading, so they don't always use their trinket, now even when they do we're still going to be so vulnerable against flashy champs that love catching people face checking bushes.

I think I'll go back to top lane because bot lane is going to be even more miserable with these changes and snowballs are going to get worse as a result.

I prefer they take away vision and balance around a game with less information between each team. The entire concept of vision wards in mobas was never something meant to be nearly as infeuential as it is today. Observation wards was just one of many items that was added from the base warcraft 3 game to fill out inventory spots in shops when dota was getting off the ground and the entire genra got stuck balancing around them for a decade.

I like what dota did to limit and circumvent warding and I think riot is on the right path in limiting ward vision. They just need to commit to balancing the game in such a way that random catches from less vision doesn't swing the game as much.

Cavesloth3 votes

Yeah they aren't gonna do that, they want more kills, more flashy one shots, and more snowball not less. If you think riots gonna improve anything next season you haven't been paying close enough attention.

They want more kills and flashy one shots but not more snowball. Decreasing snowballing and increasing the amount of time both teams are crossing the river will create more opportunities for kills and flashy plays which is riot’s ultimate goal. You can’t have 50 kill games if the game ends after 3.

Cavesloth3 votes

They claim they want less snowball but I haven't seen of the obvious changes that would need to made to facilitate that. Also it would be difficult to keep games short (another goal of theirs) without it, so I'll believe it when they put their money where their mouth is.

They have explicitly stated multiple time they want shorter games, which means more snowball and more flip-flop ping pong games. They want games shorter because spectators don't like spending 40 minutes on average watching games.

You forgot to mention that tracker's knife was also removed. The season 8 changes were made to break the Korean dominance, which was through macro play especially through vision. In the process, they turned the game into a brainless brawl. If I remember correctly, most games are played on the Korean servers, so if Riot pisses off the Koreans, that could be really detrimental for the status of the game. And the Koreans are pissed. That's the reason that Riot was so late to secure the venues for the 2018 Worlds. They were not even able the secure the primary venue.

I think it's a good thing. Players have to play more intelligent and need more map awareness instead of shitting wards everywhere and see every incomming gank. This is a good change.

Raiyza17 votes

No, no its not.

The map is too large. There are so many ways to gank a lane. There is no reason to validate nerfing vision even further.

yeah half the champs now dont need to come through paths they just gank through the walls.

I like how all the buthurt silver players downvoting every comment that says it's better to balance around higher Elo than lower Elo. Boards is 90% cry-threads from hardstucks in lower Elos.

Often I see toplaners pushing like maniacs without placing their wards anyway and then blaming their Jungler when the enemy Jungler camps them because they are such easy targets.

If you don't wanna evolve and stay in your little comfortzone maybe play Heroes of the Storm instead.

TheDangerousTaco7 votes

I think people like are so caught up in your self arrogant attitude, that you fail to see the big picture. The current trend of the game is changing. Its not always about being silver vs diamond. all players have a say in the game, and the point is, if riot wants to do this, at the end its there choice.

But stop trying to minimize peoples voice for wanting to speak out for things they don't want. They have a say in the game like everyone fucking else does. They spend money on the game like everyone else does. There wallets / voices matter just as much as your opinion. Stop trying to discredit people just because you think your some hotshot with a border.

If people don't like the direction of the game, they have a right to complain.

Shablagoo1 votes

And if they can't adapt then dont play. He is telling the truth and it hurts, the people who evolve are the ones who succeed, ppl can complain all they want but when they are told to deal with it they call you stupid and saying it is the end of the game. They also pretend like they know how the game will end, peopling saying that certain roles will benefit more and skill expression is lost i certain roles. IT isnt even out yet you dont know anything same with the others.

You can complain all you want but that is what keeps ppl stuck in there ways and why those ppl dont succeed. You have to adapt.

TheDangerousTaco3 votes

Adaptation is not a force for arguments, its a result when change cannot occur. Your argument of "don't like it, don't do it" its counter productive cause it doesn't fix the problem at hand, you just avoid cause your too lazy to think about solutions.

If players simple stop playing the game, you won't always fill a void with new players. All you will be doing, is pushing them away. Imagine that argument in reverse. if players actually did this to companies, every time a company made a new change and they ask for feedback, consumers simply said "well if you don't know it, don't make it" and just left it at that. How on earth would that company improve? How would people actually evolve into something productive.

If your response to criticism vs anti criticism is simply "just deal with it or move on" you have already lost the argument, and the whole point of why criticism exists in the first place.

Again, this is nothing about being right or wrong in terms of the what the op is suggesting. This is merely to showcase peoples fallacies on why people complaining

Shablagoo1 votes

Isnt it more like you are just unable to deal with the new change and do not want to adapt so you feel like keeping it the way it is. Also I dont think you understand what adapting is, it is adjusting to change. What you guys are doing is saying that you dont like the change so it is wrong. You dont want to adapt so keep things as they are. So when someone says adjust to the change instead of crying on the forums which one is more productive really?

Also the point isnt to talk about criticism, in general, no one is saying that you are forcing that narrative down our throat because you dont like this specific change. Not every form of criticism is valid just because people are free to make suggestions. This post isnt saying anything, he is just outright saying that the visions changes are dumb and what he thinks will happen, he didnt offer an alternative. He is just criticizing it out of pure emotion with no logical reason as to why it will be bad without any bases. The previous guys states why it could be good any gets hated on for criticizing everyone elses narrative, dont you see the fact that you are doing exactly what you are arguing against?

Don't forget this also indirectly buffs assassins especially those who build duskblade.

Also anyone remember when faker said you should check the minimap every 5 seconds? I feel like this isn't nearly as important as it used to be.

Nerf vision to make older champions obsolete.

Keep up the trend of releasing new champions which thrive in the new low-vision environment.

Being an Enchanter support player since season 3, I have to say that season 8 was the most unfun season I have ever played. My play time dramatically decrease from 1 match per day to 1-2 matches per week.

I hate myself for keep hoping that the game will get back to it old state some how.

Maybe I'm stupid, or don't have a good memory, but in what ways are control wards different/worse than the old pink ward. Because I'm remembering them being pretty similar

iamthegoatofwar1 votes

I dunno when they rolled out the stealth update but it's probably in relation to that. Pinks would show shaco, twitch in his true stealth, and a rengar who ulted.

The Great Divide1 votes

Ohhhhh - okay. I remember them splitting the stealths (invisible and camouflage), and remembered control wards wouldn't be spotting invisible champs in the change. Somehow my pea brain just didn't register this connection to when pink wards revelaed everyone haha.

Inkling Commando1 votes

twitch doesn't have true stealth. standing next to him reveals him. neither does rengar or pyke. the only one with true stealth is akali and her god damn smoke.

Awaki Sakume2 votes

He was talking about the pre-stealth rework days when stealths were all treated pretty much the same.

iamthegoatofwar1 votes

^ this. Basically twitch could stealth and without a pink ON you he could stand 5 units from you and you wouldn't notice.

I think this change, if it will hit the servers will rapidly get reverted or other vision tweaks will be added. Even now there's a lack of vision, I don't even want to imagine what going dark will do to this game

I'm just sad that trackers knife lee isn't a thing anymore :/ now they just keep buffing his damage to make up for it until he becomes an inevitable busted stat ball that is considerably less fun and hard to play
