We need to talk about mobility and melee/range balancing

Riot has stated that they are aware of and trying to work on mobility creep. They also have made statements about trying to improve the interactions between melees and ranged champions, particularly in solo lanes.

But, in the mean time, they keep releasing champions who are hyper mobile, or practically immune to melees, or both.

Look at the recently released champions:

-Gnar: large dash, a ranged auto attack, and an infinite slow on his Q. Regardless of how many times Riot nerfs his base damages, a well-played mini gnar is always going to be virtually immune to dashless melees

-Kalista: infinite kiting. Pretty much seems like Ashe 2.0: she has a team utility, she has an initiation ult, and she has kiting. Only, her kiting is way, way better than Ashe's. Pretty much immune to dashless melees

-Azir: I don't see him being brought up too much in these discussions, which surprises me. Because he's absurdly punishing to play against as a melee (in team fights and in lane). He's got over 1000 range on his main damage source, and a slow, and a relatively low cooldown dash. And if you somehow get to him through all that, he has an ult that not only knocks you back, but completely blocks the path unless you have flash up.

-Yasuo: not the worst offender, as he's melee, and his mobility is tied to having nearby minions or champions to dash to. But still hyper mobile by the standards of older champions. And still surprisingly good at disengaging with his tornado, which is impossible to dodge at low ranges.

I don't want this to be a Riot hate fest. I've played since S1, and I've always been impressed by how approachable Riot is, and how willing they are to discuss and try to fix problems with their game. I trust Riot--I trust that the people designing champions and making macro level design decisions understand the game better than I do.

I just want reassurance that something is going to be done about this. It's at a point where it's perfectly normal for every champion in a game to have at least one dash. Every time riot releases another champion like Azir or Kalista or Gnar or Zed, dashless melees take another step towards complete irrelevance. And you cannot solve the problem by simply buffing dashless melees, or giving them dashes.

How is anyone supposed to play a champion like Volibear in the current meta? It would take a complete rework for him to be playable against modern comps. How is anyone even supposed to play some of the melees that, in earlier seasons, were actually considered hard to get away from, like Shyvana? I've been playing a fair amount of Hecarim recently in normals. Hec is in no way shape or form low mobility when compared to the S1/S2 champions he was released after. But it's getting to a point where even his mobility isn't enough to allow him to stick to recent champs.

A point someone else brought up is that Slows have become an obsolete form of CC due to mobility creep. Do you think Kalista cares if you slow her? Do you think Yasuo cares so long as he has creep nearby?

Ever since I started playing League I couldn't stand playing melee champs, so I don't have quite the pain point that some melee mains have. What I can say though is that we might see another Kalista before things calm down:

  • Yasuo was released. Completely nullified a ranged champion's abilities/attacks, including ults, with a relatively low cooldown ability.
  • Braum was released. Completely nullified one attack from a ranged champion, then took a reduced amount of damage from all other ranged sources. Again, non-ult ability with a relatively low cooldown
  • Azir was released. Able to nullify the gap closers used by many melee champions with his ultimate.
  • Kalista was released. Able to continually kite melee's with her passive. Able to slow melee's with another non-ult ability.

While you might be able to count Azir as "hard countering" melee's with gap-closers, to do so he has to use his ultimate, which is a significantly higher cost than the other three champions listed. This makes me suspect that there will be another anti-melee champion comming soon.

That's true, there's a higher cost to countering melees with gap closers. But the champions I'm really worried about are champions without gap closers. He doesn't even need his ultimate to avoid most aggression from dashless melees. And it's even more frustrating/disheartening when you actually manage to reach him as a dashless melee (usually because he screwed up his positioning) only to have his mistake completely nullified by the ult.

Here's my problem with Riot's recent champ design. Imagine Azir wasn't released yet, but his Q, W, and R were all on the PBE. No one knew what his E did yet.

You're looking at a champion with very high range, a slow, and an ult that knocks back melees/walls them off from you. My first thought would be "oh cool, a long range sustained damage champion, who can fortify with turrets and has an "oh s***" button on his ult if someone reaches him. Sounds cool!"

Looking at that kit, why would anyone think "this guy's E needs to be a dash!" Without the dash, his kit already allows him to avoid most damage from melees, and to disengage if someone really goes deep on you. Why on earth does he need a dash on top of all that?

I think it's hilarious how when Riot was discussing Gnar in his spotlight, they said something like "Gnar is vulnerable in his melee form because he is very immobile." How is having a dash and a long range skillshot slow "immobile" lmao.

And they've just buffed azir.I couldn't believe my eyes when I read that. I thought azir was pretty borderline OP and was waiting for a nerf, then he got a buff (and not just a small QOL buff, but legit buffs to 2 parts of his kit with a small nerf to 1).

+1 I've been saying this since the last preseason. When I first saw the new summoner's rift, I thought the map was 20% larger, so I was excited to see if movement was, gap closers, and 'stickyness' were going to be changed, especially in favor of melee champions. Nope, neither.

Riot - "We are aware of the mobility creep, but while we attempt to fix it... We are introducing a few changes we feel will really help the dynamic of the game

  • Champions movement speed is now reduced by the amount of Defensive Stats they have
  • Randuins Omen and Thornmail now has a maximum range, only affecting targets within 150 range"

It's not real, but I would believe it if they did it

Pro tip: Never believe anything Riot says because they're incompetent, liars, or both.

Unless they admit that they're terrible at this, then you should believe that because it is objective fact.
