Why not just remove Ryze's shield and balance him around it?

I do not understand why does he need to have so much utility, mobility and damage? Why not just more movement speed? Or if he must have a shield, why does he need the movement speed? Or just slightly higher defensive stats, but no shield? Why does every champion need to be overloaded (no pun intended) with passives? Camille is another example of a champion with too much stuff in her kit that is simply unnecessary...

And yet Kindred can't have a small heal passive on her W.

His shield allows him to initiate his DPS without getting insta-bursted by other mages in the mid lane in 1/2 a second. It's balanced.

It allows him to trade unevenly in the toplane while the MS boost gives him a very easy way to escape ganks in a long lane. It's not balanced.

To answer the question seriously, it's because he's intended to be a DPS mage rather than a burst one. All DPS mages tend to have atleast something to help keep them alive. Viktor has his shield + MS boost, Cass has her heal + grounded, Malz has his passive, etc.

But he practically is a burst mage past like 25 minutes. Q E Q does at least half or 2/3 of a carries health.

I highly doubt those carries are ever building MR or HP

After 25 minutes, anything not tanky is going to hurt a squishy.

viktor is a dps mage? Never noticed

Has been for a while, since the changes to his ult. He's much less bursty and much more consistent.

But he has the shield AND the MS bonus AND the mana scaling which encourages him to build beef without losing damage, AND the point and click root.

I mean, he could do without any of these things.

It gives him a more active playstyle for someone whose actually a very basic champion. You can spam your Q on every ability thereby increasing your total damage, or you can stack 2 and get a shield. Giving him pure defensive stat buffs would just make him more linear and less fun to play.

If there was no shield, why would Ryze ever want to charge up a rune, besides that MS boost? It'll just set his damage down. Ryze would become a binary champion once again, and players would have little incentive to stray out of the full-damage combo. Someone like Ryze, has all of their abilities intertwined. Each spell works with others, and removing a function of a spell would completely change the champion. It would be like removing the slow on Ashe's W.

Also, he's a battlemage. He would be very squishy without that shield. And, your statement/question

I do not understand why does he need to have so much utility, mobility and damage?

Can apply to Viktor, who has a lot of utility, mobility, and damage. In fact, Viktor's Q boost is very similar to Ryze's Q boost. Both of them give a shield and MS.

Yah but most top lanes have a HUGE problem with him due to the sheer free damage he can get off plus if you do catch him he gets a shield and a MASSIVE move speed buff. If they could tone down the MS or place it as a flat not percentage that would help a ton I would think.

He has a shield for the same reason Graves has resists and Vayne has stealth. He's supposed to be very short range. I don't feel like debating good or bad right now, but that's the reason.

riot ONLY cares about competative play, and while their kits are fucking retarded, riot will most likely not change them due to how flashy it makes "PRO PLAYS" appear
