A late analysis on Tahm Kench

I didn't think to do this with Tahm Kench when he first came out. That was, what, a month ago now? I done goofed.

Mobility: C Lane Clear/Push: C Mana efficiency: D Damage: C- early on, but S in the mid-to-late game Crowd control: C for quantity, but S for quality Tower Smashing: C Sustainability: S- General required skill: S Durability: S++

Tahm.... Kench. As of this post, I'm almost mastery level 5 with him, and I've tried him as a support and jungler. I've also managed to carry a few games in his cavernous maw. He's really good at that.

My builds tend to focus around rushing pure, massive health as his ult's passive and E focus around having a gigantic health bar. In the jungler role, he can easily get over 5000 HP, and that's BEFORE the shield kicks in. I've actually ulted straight into a 4v1 (I was ulting into a teamfight, but when I arrived, the rest of my team was either dead or routed) and managed to score a double kill before they took me down, and outlasted a relentless thrashing from the entire enemy team that would bring any other champion to their knees long enough for my allies to charge in and sweep them up.

I don't think I've ever seen a champion this relentless and difficult to kill, and I've played Taric, Rammus, Braum, pre-rework Sion and Alistar. He even gives Mundo a run for his money (emphasis on RUN), which is why I gave him an S++ for durability. Not bad for a champion that doesn't have an actual heal.

Devour I've learned a few tricks to maximize my influence in teamfights. The first is to identify who might have some sort of nasty ultra-buff that you want to negate or remove from the fight, like, say Tryndamere's ult. Actually, I did this without even thinking about it. I intercepted Tryndamere in one game as he was shoving top lane, and we duked it out. Now, bear in mind that this is TRYNDAMERE, AKA the guy who can't die and is suicidal to fight in a slugfest post-6. When he ulted, I gobbled him up and held him in my mouth for the full duration. Completely negated it, and his heal is so negligible that he couldn't survive the second round. Devour I started using, not just to save allies, but also hold down any serious threats in a teamfight (chomp the fed assassin or the enemy's hyper death tank for the full duration) so your allies can focus on the rest of the vermin, or just plain old suppress them while your wounded allies can make their escape.

People keep giving me crap for building Wit's End on tanks, but Tahm Kench is another champion that completely validates it. I build it to increase the speed that I can lay stacks on the enemy along with my general DPS, and then I build sheer health and let the damage from his ult's passive do the rest of the work. By late game, I do about 250+ damage with every basic attack.

Tahm Kench's greatest weakness is his general lack of mobility and his inability to focus on more than one champion. The speed boost he gets from carrying an ally is rather weak and is only useful for getting them to safety (which doesn't work if the enemy jumps on you like a Goomba) or getting them closer to the enemy (which also doesn't work if they decide to burn a flash or something) or just getting somewhere faster. What I'm saying is the speed boost's usage is rather limited, and apparently people don't like being eaten and will jump out of your mouth long before the duration is over, even if it's against their best interests, and usually towards the direction of the enemy. How many troll Kenches have they deal with?

So yeah, at first I didn't really like him, but after playing him a LOT, Tahm Kench has grown on me, and I've gotten to the point where he's like the worst elements of a hooking champion and Alistar. Except worse. He's difficult to kill like Alistar, and he can remove an enemy or ally from combat long enough for the tide to turn in his favor, and that's DEADLY. I think, though, that he might get a nerf to his ult's passive. Dealing 250+ damage at level 18 per basic attack is a little broken and stupid, and I'm saying that as the Kencher.

What do you build for your various roles? I have only tried support Kench so far but that has been failing miserably, so I want to try him elsewhere.

I've found that I use a pretty standard set of items for every role he's in, and that's just to build straight health. Since he doesn't have any gap closers unless you build Righteous Glory, he's better off at letting the enemy come to him rather than the other way around and building sheer endurance if he can't close the gap fast enough. His greatest strength is being able to simply outlast the enemy and gobbling them up. Melee champions get demolished pretty easily because of this, and if mages get caught, most of them have to burn a flash to get away.

TahmKench Got enough xp as him to get lvl 5 mastery 3x over... >.>

Build order: item 3401 item 3709 item 3009 (Alacrity enchant)item 3083 item 3065 item 3143

I see ALOT of what you're saying, quite frankly I think I agree with all of it. Even the item 3091 sounds like one of those things that make me go "Oooooh, that's a good idea".

I build what I build and at that order because the item 3401 gives good health and lets me actually harass with the minions I eat or hell, combining it with smite guarantees that I can share siege minions everytime they come about. Smite also lets me feed gromp to my ADC whenever they're passing by with me and the turret isn't demanding our attention (I also level 2 my ADC with it asap... )

Then I go onto item 3709 because why SHOULDN'T Tahm be running around with 25% more hp? And then... why SHOULDN'T he be able to steal movement speed from his prey? And then why SHOULDN'T he be able to steal enemy jungle (primarily) for some extra gold (since he can just ult himself back to lane)? AND LASTLY! If you can share smite with item 3401 then why shouldn't he be able to smite? (the last one isn't Tahm specific but whatever)

Then I get item 3009 because first of all he needs mobility, guy has NO ESCAPES or movement speed buffs (provided you're playing with the usual casual that doesn't stay in your mouth because they're assholes) so I'd atleast like to say that I can run real fast and not much can stop me cept for hard consecutive CC. It also synergizes with eating an enemy... the slow resist works on self applied slows too.

After that is item 3083 because the health is sexy and improving your health regen.. well, without gray health, it's vital because your E is your lifeline... and with Gray health... well... LOL... nothing like going in with 6k hp, losing 5k, escaping and coming back 10 seconds later with 4k health or more. xD

Following that I go for item 3065... because further improving my E, adding magic resist and even improving my previous item means that IF IM NOT KILLED... I will be back shortly with most of the damage I took GONE. The magic resist is nice too :D

And the last item is the most variable... my common is item 3143 to balance out the fact that I've improved my MR.. So improving my armor would be just as nifty... The active really helps with escaping and god Tahm needs that... The passive helps deal with Vayne -.- she's Tahm's anti-christ... No other champion is as bad as her to him.

With this build I tend to hit 6k HP roughly.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

item 3078 because everything it gives you actually can serve a visible purpose... it's good for chase, good for damage, helps you get harder to kill... so forth.

item 3022 ALOT of hp and near guarantees you will not be outRUN... flash and the like are different matters.

item 3742 This is.. actually pretty nifty for Tahm, I haven't employed it yet but it could be a good substitute for the randuins... say their ADC sucks but they have other physical casters.

item 3135 Your ult, Q and W deal magic damage and the Q and W scale with AP... So, it's not a bad idea...

item 3075 Would be funny against someone building crit and not life steal.

He's pretty good as a Top Lane since he directly counters aggressive laners such as Riven and Darius, the former being common these days. He is also easier to get damage on than most since Tank items cost less AND he also gets defenses along the way.

In my opinion, his Support is too weak early game to impact the lane and his Jungle has good clear, but slightly below average ganks. Trust me, try him Top Lane!
