Karthus- Why You NEED To Get Dark Seal/Mejai's On Him

Karthus Karthus is currently a strange yet powerful champion in the game known for one thing... that late game. Karthus is an absolute beast late game due to his insane damage from his Q and his Ultimate that forces the enemy team to either build around him or lose a huge chunk of their health if they don't. However, even early and mid-game Karthus has his uses, particularly in his ultimate. Karthus, despite being an immobile Mage, can be a very safe pick if played correctly. His Q essentially being a basic attack in lane allows him to easily last hit from a distance and harass if he has Blue Buff especially. However, a common mistake I see on Karthus players is that they build Doran's Ring instead of Dark Seal. There is only one, maybe two situations where I would say Doran's Ring is a better choice on Karthus than Dark Seal with the main being if majority of the enemy team can innately negate his ultimate (ex. Nocturne, Sivir, Fiora, etc.). Otherwise, Dark Seal is simply incredible early game. Why? His Ultimate can give him so many stacks for simply pressing R when ANYONE on the map is near death, even if Karthus isn't the one to kill them. Now, I can already here people say "But Inept, Mejai's and Dark Seal lose Glory on death and part of Karthus' play style IS dying. Why would I want an item that makes me lose power when dying?" Well, then you do not realize WHY Karthus dies in a team fight. A Karthus does not simply die to die in a team fight, he dies to get kills or assists. Anyone can die, but Karthus is one of the few champions in the game that is AP and can take back his stacks of Glory that he lost upon dying. Died? No matter, get 2 kills and an assist in a team fight and you made up for it. Plus, Dark Seal/Mejai's provides a TON of AP for the gold cost if you play Karthus properly and allows you to have a ton more AP when building Karthus, especially since he usually builds AP items that are more on the defensive side.

So, essentially what I have come to tell you is that Karthus makes good use of the Dark Seal and, in all honesty, I think it is about time the community experimented more with this item, especially now that the LCS has begun to switch back to normal lanes. Normal lanes allow Lane Bullies and Lane Bullies can stack these items much more reliably than other champions. While Doran's Ring is still something I would take on mana hungry early game champions, I think it is definitely worth looking into the Dark Seal simply due to the early lead it can provide, especially if you know your champion will win early trades against enemies OR has an easy way to get a constant stream of assists throughout the game.

Finally, im not the only one who realizes this.

Yes, the mighty Dark Seal cult grows. I wonder when others will catch on and realize how powerful a 350 gold, 45 AP starting item is that also provides extra sustain in lane and a small amount of extra mana sustain that ACTUALLY BUILDS INTO SOMETHING USEFUL.

Wish they had done the same for Sword of the Occult instead of just removing it.

I wonder why people are downvoting you.

I think Cull is it's spiritual inheritor, although Cull is not very good in my opinion.

UberAffe1 votes

Probably was supposed to be but it is a pretty crappy item in most situations and the few it is meant for it is still debatable on if it is even worth getting.

This is the only way I've played karthus lately. item 1082 >item 3041 >item 3089. Assist ult to stack up, then use your gold to get that quick deathcap for earlier high damage ults and such. His damage is way too low these days without some quick dmg boosting; at least from my experience.

Usually what you build after Dark Seal/Mejai's is situational, but Rabadon's is certainly a good choice if you are proving to be successful early game. I usually try and get a RoA into Rylai's into Rabadon's/Void Staff depending on their MR, but skipping straight to Rabadon's is definitely a viable strategy depending on your success early game. It is marvelous to see someone with 25 Stacks of Glory and a Rabadon's. That is a total of 358 AP just from two items, more than enough to wreck any ADC in the Middle Game with your ultimate and just a few Qs.

I wonder when people will realize how powerful a Dark Seal/Mejai's stacked Mage is and begin to build comps around AP, especially since Locket is soon to be adjusted/nerfed. Karthus comps that have extremely powerful early game to take advantage of Karthus R is one idea, especially since Karthus scales into late game extremely well and I could name a few early lane bullies to pick in order to both eliminate potential counter picks for the enemy team and bully someone early game, like Fiora.

karthus does well against squish teams. however he will struggle against comps that have forms of lifesteal and sustain. and tanky teams in general.

Meep Man1 votes

I disagree with the tanky teams term. As far as Mages go, Karthus has the some of the highest sustained damage of all of them, allowing him to shred Tanks compared to other Mages. Of course, Tanks will still be Tanks against all but ADCs, but he is the best Middle Lane I have found for dealing with powerful, melee Tanks, especially once he gets a Rylai's. Life steal and sustain, however, can be an issue, although one that can be dealt with via your ADC getting Mortal Reminder or you yourself building Morello.

Most of Karthus' issues, actually, can be easily dealt with by your common allies or itemization.

MunchCrunchLunch1 votes

true but his ult is meaningless against tanky teams. and if you have cc tanks. he will never touch the backline.

Melledoneus1 votes

They can't stop your flash.

Meep Man1 votes

Karthus is like an ADC, but AP. Most ADCs don't just skip to the back line to kill the ADC, they have to rely on their team to get there.

Oleandervine1 votes

Karthus' passive though slightly encourages him to be a little reckless to create a dangerous zone during team fights. The Seal/Book is a little hindered when this occurs.

Meep Man1 votes

I already addressed this. I am well aware that it is part of Karthus mindset to try and be in a range to wreck havoc with his E, but, also as I said, Karthus is one of a few champions that can actually reliably revenge himself from beyond the grave. As long as you get at least 2 kills and 2 assists (aka 12 Glory), or an equivalent combination of the two, you are benefitting greatly from an item that only costs 1400 gold.

Plus, say Dark Seal's stacking mechanic REALLY isn't working out that game. Whatever, you don't have to upgrade it and could really even sell it later for little loss of gold.

The problem with karthus is he clears the wave with his q, his opponent freezes just before the tower, and then he has to leave his tower. At that point, unless you're a very skillfully karthus player, you die.

Meep Man1 votes

Why would you shove with Q? Just last hit with it. Position to where it only hits one minion. Are you saying the enemy freezes the lane at Karthus' tower?

No, i'm saying Karthus has a hard time keeping the wave from pushing because his q does a lot more damage than autos, so unless you time it perfectly if your opponent is last hitting only with autos, the wave will push. They can then freeze it near their tower, forcing you to leave yours to farm. And a karthus without the tower to back him up is a pretty soft target.

Meep Man1 votes

This is expecting the Karthus to last hit poorly. A Karthus that knows what he is doing will use his Q to always have the wave be equally pushing to his opponent.

Dread Nacht1 votes

What would you say you end up replacing to fit that into your build? I usually get RoA, Seraph's, Rylais, Voidstaff, Deathcap, and Sorc Boots.

if anything, i'm guessing boots become less required when you have the MS bonus from Mejai's

Meep Man1 votes

I dont usually get both Rabadon's and Void Staff since Im already getting a ton of Pure AP from Mejai's. Three Pure AP items sounds like something only an Artilery or Veigar would do.

Miror B1 votes

As someone who regularly plays karthus, I actually don't see a reason to use either dark seal or doran's ring. While both offer a tiny amount of AP (that adds roughly 7 extra damage total to your q), they don't offer much else due to the fact that karthus can pretty much free-farm infinitely without mana from lv2 onwards. Because of that, I often take the blue crystal + 3pots (or refillable if the enemy laner is a tank) as it gets me closer to the tear/roa without having to wait a tiny little bit longer. Dark seal is good in theory, but you're almost never going to be able to have it at enough stacks and unless you go mejai's (and wait on the tear/roa/morellos/rylai's/deathcap/void staff) it doesn't really give you any extra value.
