Well i played him. Properly at that and he didnt quite feel over the top. He is only relevant if you get a ful E W P: Q with electrocute or aery.
He can easily half (or nearly half) most people's HP via a single short combo of E->pull->Q. He really isn't that bad.
I've been playing him religiously the past few days. Sure I'm playing him in fucking bottom elos, but to say he's only relevant by landing his entire combo is quite false.
I also run Comet on him, which serves him pretty well given how much poke this guy has. And you just gonna land the E (which really isn't hard, I do have some mind thinking that E's hitbox may in fact need to be reduced a little because it's often undodgeable to less mobile champs, which is a bit too cheap given Swain's kit forces enemies to be both unable to be in the front line nor the backline as well as the fact how much power it has when E lands) and pull then BOOM, another Comet hit in the face. Easy.
Just run Corrupting Potion and Manaflow Band to get some mana going in early game, and you can easily bully most people out of lane as Swain. I personally run Sorcery+Domination as rune set; Sorcery is obvious and I get Comet for it, Domination for the Cheap Shot for extra damage and most importantly because of Ravenous Hunter.
BUT it was fully stacked up.
and because I HAVE to spam my Q and E, Maokai becomes physically impossible to kill thanks to his passive.
